Fun historical trivia: prince Rupert was so fond of his dog that he’d indeed take it into battle and had it so well trained that at a word from him it would stand on two legs, dance, or even pee on someone.

Damn. Imagine dying in a battle and the last thing you see is a dog peeing on you while the prince laughs manically.

Awesome battle in an epic film with incredible performances. Richard Harris and Alec Guinness especially deserve acclaim. It’s also funny that an Irishman is playing Cromwell. It’s a hell of a movie but I don’t think I could ever follow someone Puritan enough to literally cancel Christmas 🎄

I'm really appreciating these old movies where they actually hired hundreds of extras to form the armies. You really get a sense of the scale of it all when you see real people arrayed like that, as opposed to hundreds of generic CGI soldiers.

You might want to actually look at history from these periods before making statements like that. These are dramatizations from a time period movies tend to glorify like they were the golden days.

Always found the part where the pikemen drop their pikes like they were red hot hilarious. Hardly surprising really as the 60s Spanish Army weren't trained in pike drill! Even the Sealed Knot and ECWS elevate their pikes to almost the vertical to avoid injuring the opposition. A push-of-pike would be deadly work IRL I'd wager.....

No strategy , no tactics , no reserves hold , just a brutal primitive brawl on both sides. Was so in reality , or just in this movie ?
@bumpermanthesecond615Ай бұрын
The real life battle would be much slower because pike and shot formation moves very slowly under heavy fire from artillery and muskets. The charge doesn't happen often so pikemen fight via long spears while some brave blokes duck under and stab them from below. It's a simplification of the battle for the viewers to understand

What happened in the movie industry since those days? I mean, so many real men, beasts fill the battlefield, and wide camera angles. And the impact, force, and falls seem so real. Were they trained better stuntmen? even horses fall on many of those movies realistically.... How did they pulled it off?
@brazzb7612 ай бұрын
lax safety regulations (you'd probably be shocked by the amount of injuries here that would be avoided in modern days). Also the cost of paying each individual extra is much higher nowadays unless you're filming in developing nations due to minimum wages and unions enforcing them on set. Plus there's much less room for error with modern computer technology. This is all coming from a guy whose favourite historical film remains waterloo, but the conditions for those movies have passed`
