It is not racism to be against taking literature with historical references and background and then put actors in there that raise questions about the historical accuracy. We know what horrible things were happening to black people during Dickens' time. It greatly confuses the narrative to have black actors in parts they would not possibly have been in in real life. Before the knee jerk replies about "acting," then why is Olivia Coleman in all that makeup if all we need to pay attention to is acting? Obviously, appearance has a lot to covey to the audience. And where would the woke be if the BBC made Maru, or Kebra Negast, or Sosu' Call with white actors? I would hate to see these African classics distorted by choosing actors that don't accurately reflect the author's intent, even if race isn't a historical factor in the story. Sadly, it is racism to push these woke agendas.

@antpasqu Жыл бұрын
@@toriwatson7132 then obviously you have no knowledge of Dickens and why he wrote what he wrote. If it was any other story with an historical focus then it would not be a problem. That is why I mentioned Roots. Roots is a historically rooted story where race is part of the story and real history. All of Dickens' writings are historically rooted and address class. Throwing anyone into the cast that cannot portray the historicalness of the story raises questions and confusion to the viewer. There are over millions of individual stories out there that can be made with diverse actors. Stop taking classics and misrepresenting them just to make woke points.
@toriwatson7132 Жыл бұрын
@@antpasqu Apples to oranges, mate. “Roots” is a primary of example of race being CENTRAL to the story-No one should ever do colorblind casting with that piece. If status and classicism is central to a Dickens story, artistic liberties CAN be taken. I’ve seen SO many adaptations of Dickens, Austin, and Shakespeare with colorblind casting. I went to theatre school where POC were cast in Noel Coward and Shaw. It’s nothing new! BUT, we would NEVER colorblind cast a production of Raisin in the Sun-again, RACE playing central to the circumstances of the story. You see the difference now, or are you going to whine and complain about those productions too?
@antpasqu Жыл бұрын
@@toriwatson7132 So move the goal posts. Now it's "central" as the hurdle. I maintain that something set in Victorian England about class, cannot be confused with putting non-white people in roles that they could not have been in at the point in history. Putting them in those roles raises questions that confuse the story. At that point what is the purpose of the story? Except to make people feel better when they can point at the screen and say "oh my, they look like me, I feel good about myself now"? Like there is a dearth of any group on the screen any longer.

Not for Drama, Agenda, thr BBC and Disney who owns FX is run by activists for the most part and they are ruining entertainment. Plenty of roles for people of color out there, plenty, but now their force casting for the leads and most of the public does not agree with it, it's distracting and often not realistic or historically accurate.

Honestly surprised Pip isn’t a woman and gay. This story has stood the test of time as it was written. Why didn’t the people making this show create something else? Really sick and tired of being told that anyone can play any part unless it is a white actor portraying a non white character. Estella can be black. Ajax in “The Eternals” can be a Latina. Thomas Jefferson can be a black man. But, Social Justice Warriors, could a white actor portray Martin Luther King? Malcolm X? Harriet Tubman? Black Panther? Call me racist. I don’t care. All that has been accomplished by the “wokeness” is trading one double standard for another. In the end..who cares? It’s a stupid television program. I have other things to worry about. Don’t upyou?

Actually, Slavery was abolished in England in 1772. Much like in the US, that means there were a number of black communities that were created by those freed individuals. Britain was also a massive Empire at the time and migrants from the colonies as well as many formally enslaved black people fleeing the US in the years before and after the American Civil War, black Britons weren't terribly uncommon, especially in cities like London, Liverpool, and Bristol. At the time Great Expections was written in 1860, there were an estimate 15000 black individuals living in England, many of whom, according to records, lived in the same neighborhoods and did the same sorts of jobs the characters in Dicken's novels did. A quick google search can give you more information if you're intrested. Either way, it's not revisionism to include black characters in these stories. If anything, it's a more accurate picture of what Dicken's working class England looked like.
