Thanks, Melissa, this really helped. I now know what I did wrong and how to correct the problem (I was setting the rolls too close together). Once again, a well done and informative video.

I'm just buying my first Rolling mill (not as good as yours but still) and it is wonderful to see we can do more than just laminating metal sheets or straighten wire, I love the fact that you don't only need textured plates but can also use everyday stuff you find around for textures (tissue, textiles etc) thanks for this video it was quite helpful :)

Chello Dr this particular one was a flat 130 from Pepetools. But it doesn’t open as wide as I would like. And if I have thicker pieces, then o like to use my Durston c-150 DRM

is there any way i can talk you into making a 18 gauge piece of wire making a jump ring,twist it into a figure 8 and see if this particular rolling mill will make a flattened curb chain,not solid flat,about a quarter inch thick mam. I got a necklace ord4r in,and im just trying to find a decent roller with the right amount of toughness for some of my larger body building customers jewelry sizes.

So, why did you pick a Durston mill vs. others? Price? Functions? Just curious.
@MelissaMuir
@MelissaMuir 10 жыл бұрын
Zippy DoDah I had done a lot of research. I knew I wanted a good quality mill that was built well and had a good reputation. I had heard this was one of those purchases to spend your money wisely on this one. I knew I wanted a Cavalin or Durston. I have never been sorry for purchasing this one. The price was a little bit more than some on the market, but again it has been good for me.

Hi Melissa! Great video!! I've decided to buy a Durston rolling mill, but don't know what to choose, the C150 or the D2 130... Do you still have the same model? what is your opinion? Thank you so much!
@MelissaMuir
@MelissaMuir 8 жыл бұрын
Hi Marta, I have the C150 and have loved it. I have also recently added a Pepetools 110mm Flat Rolling mill to my studio and I love theirs as well. Both are great machines, though I think the finish on the new Pepe mills are a little nicer than my Durston. And the Pepe is a fraction of the cost. So that might be something for you to look at. I can get pricing for the Pepe for you if you think that might be an option. Otherwise, I really have been pleased with the C150. It has served me very well.

I would love to know how to roll impressions of leaves too. Mine are completely dried but they just don't seem to give a very good impression even with the metals annealed. @IAMGiftbearer perhaps they use synthetic? Would love to know :)

do you wrap six fold paper so as to not imprint the chemicals from stock paper onto the mill faces..would you so 6 fold wrap if you were mill rolling dried magnolia leaf through mill...we did roll magnolia leaf plus annealed copper and it left an ugly organic smudge on the lower and upper mill. we incidentally the student didn't fully clean up and it marked up another student pattern milled sterling silver bangle
@MelissaMuir
@MelissaMuir 6 жыл бұрын
sorry to have missed this comment Mike. The reason for a 6 fold wrap is for the fullness and adding a bit more pressure on the piece to give a better impression. When the student rolled the leaf, was it right against the rolls?

Hi Melissa. I just received the economy rolling mill from Contenti. The first time I rolled a piece of annealed 24 gauge copper with a piece of textured scrap booking paper on both sides and wrapped with paper towels the way you did it in your video, it left a small gash/ding./line in the steel roller about a 1/4 in long. I didn't expect that? Should I expect to get dings and nicks and marks on my steel rollers? Will it cause marks in my metal from now on? Thanks, Leslie
@MelissaMuir
@MelissaMuir 6 жыл бұрын
First, yes, that mark will transfer to your metal. If you get texture on your mill rollers from just that, I would return the mill ASAP and make the commitment to buy a decent mill. Your mill rollers need to be harder than that.
@lesliescholz403

Can you recommend one that is not too expensive???
@MelissaMuir
@MelissaMuir 6 жыл бұрын
The best bang for your buck is going to be the Pepetools Ultea rolling mills. It is very high quality. A 90mm mill is only about $450. While that seems a bit much at first, it isn't when you realize you purchase this once, use it for a lifetime, and the rolls won't be damaged as easily.
@lesliescholz403
@lesliescholz403 6 жыл бұрын
Thanks! Contenti is sending me new rollers. I'm going to play around with the old rollers and see if they mar easily. I'm not sure if I put the mark in the roller when I rolled the copper or if they came that way. If they mar when I play with the old ones, I will return the roller and they will refund. They said they will make good and they guarantee quality. He agreed that it should not have the marks.

Why do you clean the annealed metal if it's going to be annealed again?
@MelissaMuir
@MelissaMuir 8 жыл бұрын
I always clean the metal before putting it through the mill, especially if it is going to be right up against the rollers. That way I protect the rollers. But if you use something to wrap the metal (paper towel, water color paper, other metal, then you really don't need to pickle it before rolling, especially if you are going to anneal it again.
