Opened in 1967 and advertised as the place to party in the 80's, it would later close its doors in 2008 due to the novelty of resorts wearing thin, and the rising costs of operating an offshore site 16km's from the mainland. After a decade of failed development applications and false promises from leaseholders (who also accumalated a debt of nearly $900,000 in unpaid rent), the government has taken back ownership and is currently deliberating on what it should be used for. Despite spending hours trying to find before footage, it wasn't until the day after posting this I came across some. In this video you can actually see snippets of the pool, spa and more from around the place in its prime - kzbin.info/www/bejne/mqSvmqCveKmSj5I

I worked there in the 80s. Jake welcomed me onto the island. 30 years later I went back and ran into Jake in Yepoon! Amazing. We reminisced about old times. Went to the island and busted through the fence to Stereo Boulevard where we all lived. My room hadn’t changed in 30 years! Spiders cobwebs and dirt but exactly as I left it totally blown away. Amazing times🤙🏽

Haha, that's cool as Raz! Sad and weird to see it like this? Remember what the accomodation prices were like back then by any chance?

Mate i live in Sydney, all i remember it was a package deal with flights and accomodation all included. All up for 6 nights i think it was around $750 but there were 3 of us in a room. I cant wait to share this video with my mates we were only talking about this a few weeks ago its uncanny. Cheers Gecko

Cool as Matt! Can’t imagine what it must be like to have been in its prime, and then to see it like this. Just seeing some before footage was enough to spin me right out.

So weird to see it like that. I worked there for 6 months in 1987. Staff numbers were around 175 and we had our own little community on the other side of the runway. Didn’t save much money as it truly was a party island. Good memories
@urbexgecko3 ай бұрын
Interesting Geoff! I noticed a bunch of already demolished/barely standing buildings in bush on other side of runway, think I know where you're talking about. Sounds like one hell of a life experience, I can only imagine how good that would have been...stunning island!

Went to GK in the early eighties and stayed at the Youth Hostel near the resort. We used to walk along the beach each night to get to the "disco" at the resort. The eighties was probably its heyday. So sad to see it like this. I flew in on that airstrip where the goats are now!
