Absolutely love the Skylon and ideas of space plane's in general. Great job Matt.

Thanks for the video, Matt. That model is very, very cool.

It's a damn shame this mod is abandoned. Would have loved to see SABRE done RIGHT in ksp. It's damn near impossible to build a proper Skylon analog (that won't kill your framerate) with KSP's stock RAPIER engines. And believe me, if I had the know how, I would have offered Captain Kipard to take over development myself

A good mod to use in conjunction to this is Avionics throttle mod , and a one small vtol engine under carriage for balance landing

I had no idea that this game was so powerful, that you could actually build a spacecraft and test it in a realistic physics environment.

In this video, I have the game configured mostly stock as it existed a year and a half ago, so a lot of the physics is greatly simplified... but even still, KSP in this form is a better physics simulator than a whole lot of other "sim" titles I can think of. This game is one of the greatest educational tools ever made, disguised as a silly video game! There's a community of realism enthusiasts who have extensively modded KSP to make the whole experience much more true to life, with an accurately modeled entire solar system, real fuels and rocket engines, more accurate aerodynamics, etc. The Realism Overhaul mod is probably a good place to start: forum.kerbalspaceprogram.com/index.php?/topic/140070-113-realism-overhaul-v1130-july-24/

One note: The Skylon's precooler does NOT turn the air into liquid oxygen. You are referring to L(iquid).A(ir).C(ycle).E(ngine)s, which turn the air into liquid oxygen. The precooler actually does its name. The S.A.B.R.E. works just like the R.A.P.I.E.R. (except that the R.A.P.I.E.R. is based on the S.A.B.R.E.), so it IS a jet engine. The Skylon takes oxygen from the atmosphere for oxygen until it exits the atmosphere, in which it uses its stored liquid oxygen. Thank you for reading.

So are you _the_ Winter Owl, associated with the coolest mission flag in KSP?

The SABRE engine does not _create_ liquid oxygen to feed the engine, does it? Otherwise awesome video! :)

VDM The air is very cold, but I don't think it liquifies. For the first part of the launch, the SABRE acts like a jet engine, and at higher speeds, a ramjet. Unfortunately at high speeds the compression of air into the engine causes it to heat up a lot, reducing the thrust. So by using the cold of the liquid hydrogen you're carrying, passing it through a helium circuit into the pre-cooler system, it chills the incoming air from about 1500 degrees to -150 degrees C in a fraction of a second. Since the boiling point of oxygen is -183 degrees C, that means it isn't liquid. Just bloody cold.

stainlesssteelfox1 I don't believe it acts like a ramjet at higher speeds. Initially it is a jet engine, then switch to rocket mode for internal oqygen. Ramjets work differently from a jet engine and still need a certain level of oqygen from the atmosphere. Ramjets won't get you into space.
@stainlesssteelfox19 жыл бұрын
VDM Well yes. It goes, turbojet > ramjet > rocket. It's only in ramjet mode while at trans-sonic sppeds where there's still some atmosphere to use. Then it switches over to it'a internal supply of liquid oxygen aand becomes a pure rocket.

stainlesssteelfox1 As much as I've been wanting to avoid commenting on any old KSP vids... this is getting too damn painful. Read here: www.reactionengines.co.uk/sabre_howworks.html The SABRE as planned is NOT a jet engine of any kind. It has some similarities because it compresses intake air, but the thrust always comes from conventional rocket engine combustion chambers and nozzles.
@stainlesssteelfox19 жыл бұрын
I stand corrected. It uses jet engine technology, the turbo-compressor that is fed from the pre-cooler. But you're right, re-reading the blurb it isn't really a jet engine or a ramjet. I've seen that page before, so I should know this. I guess I was conflating it with the scramjet engine from the NASP.

Unfortunately, no. Development and support for this mod stopped several versions ago, and it will not currently work in the game. I don't have a solution.
