There’s not much space through the tunnel. This coach uses that space to the maximum. If the train failed in the tunnel then that end entrance would still allow evacuation.

@@DocterGeko I think it's both. After I made my comment I remembered on my visit there it's to lubricate the flanges on such a tight curve and to stop heat expansion.
