@ultrametric93176 жыл бұрын
To avoid conflict with Kennedy and Newark, the approach to LaGuardia often amounts to a descending spiral over the city and a final base turn that is much like landing on an aircraft carrier! For that reason pilots sometimes call the airport the USS LaGuardia :) In this example you can see Citi Field and the tennis complex at the very beginning and then again at the end - first from about 5,000 feet and then from a few hundred feet on final approach. Really fantastic!! So many famous landmarks are visible!

@, we didn't circle all the way around Manhattan like this when I was on a flight approaching LGA, but that was also back in 1998. I remember us decending towards Manhattan while heading northbound, first over Staten island, then got a good view of the Statue of liberty, then over the lower East river seeing the banks of lower Manhattan (got a good look at the still existing twin towers), then over the Brooklyn bridge while merging northeast and then seeing the East river, Roosevelt island, and a good view of the Manhattan Midtown skyline while over Queens, and then the last part of the descent was quite similar to this video, I recall. Made a sharp left and saw Flushing Meadows, the World's fair, and the stadium. We didn't do the full circle over Manhattan like in this video, kind of wish we did.

Right it is. They also have helicopter rides circling around Manhattan for tourists. The heliport is on the East river in Lower Manhattan (I'm explaining this, of course, to non-native New Yorkers who may not already know). I just think that there's no point in wasting your money on the helicopter if you got a window seat while circling Manhattan upon landing. Sometimes with heavy traffic backup, you may circle more than once.

I fly into LaGuardia too much so I am familiar with that approach. That is the Expressway Visual Approach to RWY 31. But to get the grand tour of Manhattan the flight usually needs to be coming from the North or Northeast to enter the pattern that way. If you are coming from the South or West, you still get a good view of Manhattan, just not the grand tour. There was an approach from the South that used to take you up the Hudson river, North of the GWB and then circle to land RWY22, but they don't seem to fly that approach as much anymore. That approach was even more breathtaking.

It's exciting there. I'm not a NY native, but I've known and talked to different native New Yorkers, had a NY girlfriend at one time, and I've been there (even though it was years ago (and I won't ever forget how good the food is there). And my dad had been there much more recently. This is what I know: you won't get bored in NY, there are endless attractions and fun things to do. And yes, NY does have some of the best food in the world; notably their jewish delicatessens, Greek food, their pizza, and their pasta Italain restaurants (large Italain American population in NY). But, you'll need money, Manhattan is expensive, particularly if you want to stay in a decent hotel and try some of their good food that I mentioned above. And there are alot of bustling crowds sometimes, sometimes shoving. Crime isn't as bad in NY as it once was, but it's still not advisable to go to Central park after dark, or to wander into alleys.
