@nebelland8355 yeah, that's what I said. The way you get to the conclusion is different, however. In French, you have these pretty added layers of an old idiom about vegetables. This is what makes the original superior. Things originally written in English are also better than their translations. It's the way it is.

I love that you’re helping others understand expressions which are hard to translate. As a trilingual watching movies with my family who only spoke our countries language I was often angry at the subtitles or dubbing completely changing the meaning of a sentence which in turn changes the feeling or meaning of the whole scene or even movie. It isn't hard to translate everyone knows what an artichoke heart is and that she was calling him heartless. It had nothing to do with a leaf for everyone. Totally different saying which she didn't say.

When I was in Brazil (in the 90s) they showed American movies with subtitles in TV. The funny part was: every foul language, doesn’t matter what they said, was translated with the same word „Droga“, which was the most acceptable one, I guess. I was watching with Brazilians who didn’t speak (much) English and I had a laughing fit, but my Portuguese lacked the vocabulary to give a better translation. 😎

I am sorry to disappoint you but this expression is not purely French, we also use it in Greece (and maybe it is used in other parts of the world as well). In Greek it is καρδιά αγγινάρας/ Kardia aginaras/ heart of an artichoke and you say that for someone who is flirting simultaneously with lots of people, so more or less a player. This comes from of the anatomy of the artichoke whose central part, the “heart” has lots of compartments.

We also say that in Greek! Έχω καρδιά αγκινάρα = sharing love with a lot of people, falling in love easily. So when I watched the film in French I had no trouble understanding this and was impressed that this expression exists in French. Maybe the Greek expression derives from the French one. No idea.

It's simply that the centre part of an artichoke is called the heart. You're overthinking it and mixing metaphors. I didnt know about the french one though, so thanks for that.

Even an artichoke has a heart. Means he doesnt have a heart. Very simple to understand as we have artichokes and call the middle a heart. It isnt nessisary to bring another french sayinng into it which she isnt saying.

actually, I feel like with its implications, the translation reads rather well on its own! you can interpret the translation as is, like artichokes, a literal vegetable has one while being unable to speak in the human tongue, whereas the man does not. it's even better with context though, love that! very cool!

What she says also relies on the french way of saying "être un légume" (in a literal translation, to be a vegetable) which means to be lazy or not being able to do anything. In this specific case, the boss was criticizing his employee (played by Jamel Debbouze) by calling him lazy, if I remember well. I love the fact she's sticking up for him!

Almost all the artichokes in the USA are grown in California, Californians eat the most artichokes, and artichokes are the state vegetable of California. Still, I would bet that this expression would not be understood by most Californians.

Did I miss something? How was it difficult to translate? Even within the same language, you have idiomatic expressions that are regionally/culturally specific. This is normal. And there are context clues one can pick up to get where the chat is going.
