Great Loop Cruising Info: Leg 28-Cape May, NJ to Great Kills, NY

This video covers the Great Loop leg that goes from Cape May, New Jersey to the New York City area. We took a mooring ball at Great Kills Harbor after our longest run yet, a 117-mile stretch mostly in the Atlantic Ocean. Most Loopers go on "the outside" for this leg due since the intracoastal route through New Jersey is shallow and often requires local knowledge.

I used to sail on Raritan Bay and sail over to Great Kills from Keyport all the time. The intercoastal is very tortuous and shallow through Barnegat so as long as the ocean is pretty quiet it is much easier to go outside as you say. Also going through the Point Pleasant canal is pretty hairy sometimes and you still have to go out in the ocean from Point Pleasant to Sandy Hook.
