@Liberation Sarcasm. But a kernel of truth in it, too, because the Chinese are always one local uprising away from nationwide rebellion, and the criminal communist party lives in terror of revolution, or, as they call it, "counter-revolution," because 70 years later, the entrenched establishment still calls itself "revolutionary."

It won't make sense to future people because the left now controls almost everything - pretty sure they will not talk about China's actions against the Uighurs in our future history books... considering the left loves oppressive governments and hate any people practicing religion.

I worked at one of the boat yards driven out of business by that plan. I had a good job as a Marine Electrician, paid quite well. We were all pink slipped the same day. 34 skilled workers suddenly out of work, every boat yard either laying off or closing entirely. Thousands of good jobs gone. Instead of paying taxes we all ended up on unemployment and food stamps. I lost my home. If you could find work in your field it was at cut rate pay because their were plenty of hungry, talented people and not enough work to go around. Not only did the boat industry suffer but so did everyone who supported us. A lot of small companies that provided everything from lumber to fiberglass to the finishing touches on a yacht. Drove all that business overseas.

It's funny just the other day I was thinking yahts are best form of wealth redistribution ever. A wealthy person buys one, uses it like twice a year, then spends huge amounts keeping it running. All that work to build, fuel, and maintain it is done by.... you guessed it, middle class skilled workers.
@abepickens
@abepickens 3 жыл бұрын
Yep. Keep thinking like that and we'll all be in subsistence-maintaining indentured servitude. But at least we'll get to call ourselves "middle class", which is way better than the chumps that have to slave away for our measley trickle-down. We should stop producing wasteful products catered to the wealthy alltogether. Just straight up refuse to make & staff the yachts, McMansions, exotic resorts, expensive goods and such. Put our time, energy and resources toward the common good - or at least something more useful than a boat that collects dust 90% of the time. If you think you're sticking it to the Man with a small maintenance bill, you're a sucker.

The city council of the little town I lived in *never* did maintenance on anything. They all wanted to spend tax dollars creating something new to put their name on. The community pool? It worked, the pot hole in front of his house was fixed. Just be careful navigating the rest of the street.

This series so far seems to be a repeating lesson that when the government charges more taxes they get less tax revenue due to damage to whatever industry they heaped taxes on and people finding tax loopholes. The best way for the government to make more in tax revenue is to keep the taxes simple and fair like a flat income tax for everyone and flat sales tax in all products while lifting as many superfluous taxes as possible.
@sharpfang
@sharpfang Жыл бұрын
It's economy 101, tax amount - tax revenue curve is arc-shaped. Raising taxes past certain threshold actively decreases the tax revenue.
@r5t6y7u8
@r5t6y7u8 9 ай бұрын
The tax code has nothing to do with revenue and everything with control. The power to tax is the power to destroy. The real job of the IRS is punishing the "wrong" people. Think how many people spoke their minds and suddenly wound up in trouble with the IRS.
@dinoblacklane1640

Kinda reminds me of how people don't know how income tax brackets work. It's shocking how many people I've seen refuse extra work because they think going into that next tax bracket would cause ALL of their income to be taxed at that rate. Which because of how complicated taxes are, causes those people to get less money, which causes the government to get less tax money from income tax. And less tax money from sales tax. Makes me wonder how many millions(billions?) In missed taxes are there because of a complicated tax law

I don't know what the 'gerrymandering' had to do with anything in your story. He held the seat before, and held it after. He went on to take on the speakership, where he led his party to the worst defeat of any (or rather either, because America) party that century. He was best known for his campaign to impeach Clinton for having an affair, while he had an affair with a young girl himself. He later teamed up with the Clintons to push universal healthcare, then went on campaign with Trump screaming about the evils of universal healthcare. What a great guy, but I don't get the 'unintended consequences' bit.

@@Leberteich That's where on the job training, internship, and work study comes in. Oh wait, that's not offered anymore because it's better to push the education requirements onto the worker. Closing our borders and shrinking the pool of migrant workers would also vastly help too. Then again, republicans need cheap labor, and democrats need more voters. Oh now I'm getting devious... What if government forced women back into the house. That's a big chunk of the labor supply gone overnight. Wages would rise, men and women would be greatly incentivized to pair up and have families and not cheat on each other. Productivity would be boosted and gossip would fall. *hysterical laughter* "Women forced back into the house". Oh me and my absurd ideas...

Another real life outcome in NY state of COVID testing requirements: My aged mother had to suffer from a life-threatening septic episode because test results from a simple UTI test were tied up in the weeks-long fax machine back log at her doctor's office. The backlog was due to mandatory testing for everyone (including healthy people) who wanted to keep their job having to submit to constant COVID swabbing. Their results were forwarded to under-equipped general practitioners who were then rendered helpless in conducting routine or urgent tests for anything else at all. The result was undoubtedly many preventable deaths from what would have otherwise been treatable infections.

Sounds like the right effect. It’s not about increasing tax revenue, it’s about focusing consumer spending on more productive areas and enhancing social cohesion by limiting ostentatious displays of wealth.

It didn't do that though, the yachts are still being bought. But instead of them being USA made yacht, employing US citizens and paying US taxes. They are now made overseas. The yachts are still being made and bought, the money for them is just going overseas now

To the second story, about China, it should also be added that due to the problem of insects, China decided to use a LOT of insecticide. The result was that the insects that pollinate plants were also killed. So no more pollination. What a great idea.
