First, they are now adding ads to my videos without my permission. Please quickly refresh the page, more than once if necessary until the video starts without the ad. Ok, so this is a tutorial for making a cool paper mache mask. Visit my blog, www.PaperMacheBlog.com for more tutorials and discussions. Or visit my site, www.GourmetPaperMache.com for more information about paper mache. Thank you for watching! NOTE: Since I made this video people have told me that they can't find the wire mesh. You can find it online here, www.dickblick.com/products/ama.... It's Amaco Wireform Mesh. I used the "diamond" version. You can also make a great impression using the thick brand of aluminum foil found in grocery stores.

I did a mask and it made me FAMOUS FOR THREE DAYS! I watched your videos, and others about mache, and I made a demon head myself. I took the mask to Salem, MA for the 2016 Halloween weekend and I've never gotten more attention than I have in my life! People too hundreds of pictures of me! Then, on Monday, Oct 31, we marched at the Village Halloween Parade and OMG we were SWARMED by people taking pictures of us! it was incredible! Thank you so much for teaching your methods here on KZbin! You've made me famous for three days! It was AWESOME and I am inspired to make more masks for next year!

I use aluminum foil for the base of my mask and I pull it out of the mask later to line it with thin craft foam around the nose and forehead to make it comfortable. For a full head mask I make a cross with plastic canvas then I make a circle strip to go around my forehead, gluing the cross in the middle of the circle of course curving it to the size of my head. And I prefer to make a movable jaw by using a nut and bolt and attaching it by cutting a hole in the plastic canvas and the lower jaw piece and slipping it through each hole and putting an elastic band on it to give it some pullback

@Gourmetpapermache
@Gourmetpapermache 11 ай бұрын
You are very welcome. One thing I'll mention is that you can get a fit that is a little too tight when it dries since it shrinks a little. So when you make the impression on your face don't worry if it feels a little bit more loose than you'd like. That's actually perfect. Good luck!

Hi Dan. Really enjoyed your video tutorial on mask making. I've watched the series a couple times, and I think I'm ready to give it a go. I couldn't find the diamond form wire mesh you used, but picked up some aluminum screening used for screen windows. It looks to be about right, but not sure whether it will hold the shape of my face, or spring back. Have you ever used this material? Thanks in advance! Steve
@Gourmetpapermache
@Gourmetpapermache 9 жыл бұрын
Hello Steve. I don't think the screen you are talking about will hold it's shape. You can use the "heavy duty" foil they sell in the grocery stores as well. I know you are probably ready to start, but you can get the mesh I used by following the link he link I put in the video description. Good luck! Dan

Sorry, I forgot to answer your question about curtains. I wish I knew the answer to that. Curtains can be made of all kinds of cloth (all blends and thicknesses). I'm afraid that they might be much higher percentage of polyester than cotton. That would make the pieces not stick down as easily as something that would absorb the glue better. You might have to experiment a bit. Try working with the cloth on an extra piece of paper mache. Good luck!

I really do enjoy your videos, but I want to ask you this. What brand is it for that small gauge wire mesh? Because I might use it as a base where I'm hoping to make a huge polymer clay mask that is purely well sculpted containing UV color paint parts on it & hopefully if possible I can try to apply a LED on it with fog coming out of the eyes & mouth. Let me know what you think of that & where to get it. Thank you. = )

Great tutorial. I'm thinking about making a mask/helmet for a convention out of paper mache; how much does the wireform matter? There seems to be some variations of the amaco wire mesh like impression mesh or modeler mesh that claim to be better for armatures, do you have any experience with those? Additionally, is leaving the wireform in the mask for the sake of increased strength unnecessary? I know you took yours out at the end, but I likely won't be using so many layers of paper or cloth mache.
@Gourmetpapermache
@Gourmetpapermache 5 жыл бұрын
Hey David. Glad this was of help. I have only used the "Diamond" mesh because that is what was on the shelf at Home Depot. So I can't offer any advice about any of the other products. You can also use the thick aluminum foil as a way to make the facial impression. I decided to pull out the wire to lessen the weight. But you could leave it in if you think you need it for strength. Good luck with your project!

Hi Dan. Was wondering what gage size for the wire mesh? I know you said small. But looking at it at the store they have tons of gage sizes that seem small but I dont know. Thank you Dan the Monster Man.

+White Boy Hey White Boy. I'm sorry, but I don't know the gauge. I used the "diamond" mesh of the Amaco wire. Follow the link to the wire in the video description (under the video). It might say in the product description. Good luck! Dan

Hey great video! I was wondering how strong the mask is like could you wear it to a con and feel confident that it would be okay?
@Gourmetpapermache
@Gourmetpapermache 7 жыл бұрын
Thanks Charlotte. Yes, it is quite strong. The cloth and glue "skin" (what I call "cloth mache") adds a lot of strength to paper mache. And it allows for great details. Good luck Dan

Hello Dan the Monster-Man~~~ Can you use wood glue as an alternative to Elmer's or non-brand white glue? You said you need a couple of quarts - is that only for the original covering of the wire mesh? Or the whole project...?? by the way, this is my first attempt at this type of craft, and I find your tutorials very easy to follow, so thank you very much for that. and the high speed voice killz me every time!! &^D

Hello Adolfo. Thanks for the kind words. I'm very glad my videos are helpful. Yes, wood glue or PVA will work. It tends to be more plasticene, a little less water soluble, but that's okay. I use flour and water paste for the initial paper mache with the newspaper, although you can use white glue for that as well. It's actually cheaper to buy a gallon of the white glue at Lowe's for about $12. Good luck! Dan

Groovey!! Thank so you much for a superfast response! I'm just getting started - the mask is dry now and preparing for the next step &^D I'm using your steps to get to the point of changing the subject of creation - instead of "Darkness - from Legend" I going to try LotR Sauron's Head or Helm....wish me luck! I'll keep you posted on this progress. If you want an idea for another mask tutorial, try a "Squid Head Mask with 4 tentacles (google: Mindflayer)"; that will be my next project...I would be honored if you had a tutorial already for guidance through this adventure :) Thanks again!! PS...I think I am going to get addicted to this...this happened before with Hirst Arts Molds!!! SQUIRREL!!!

@Gourmetpapermache
@Gourmetpapermache 9 жыл бұрын
Hello Max. Thank you for your kind words. No, please don't try to use the flour and water paste with cloth. It won't work at all. Newspaper absorbs the flour and water paste. Cloth would absorb the water in the paste, but not the paste. You really need some sort of white glue for the "cloth mache". Dan
