Thank you Captain Q and Randay! From the Great Lakes! Where I’ve sailed for 40 years, and proud to report that I faithfully watched every episode of your show and used your show to refine my search “hither and yawn” two winters ago, around the Great Lakes-Marinas and Boat yards, from Chicago up and around the Mitten and back south to Cleveland, in search of our ideal Blue Water boat capable of safely navigating the Great Lakes Beautiful Bays and countless islands. And after viewing this episode Iam happy to report the purchase of a 1990 27’ Island Packet. They really are nice boats and yes there not race boats but there built to take a licking and they are nice cruisers, now that Iam retired I don’t need to be back by Sunday night anymore all I need is plenty of d.m. Thanx again Cap’n😉

Enjoyed the history of Robert Johnson and his association with McDonnell Douglas. My mentor Harold Adams was the retired Chief when I met him in Hawaii in 1977. Harold calculated the handicapping system for sailboat racers of varying lengths among many other notable accomplishments. He was a great safety engineer and pioneered surfing in Southern California. Designed the first hydraulic landing gear for the DC-3 and built his own 54 foot motor sailer that he Captained when moving from Pacific Palisades to Hawaii in 1971. I had the pleasure of assisting the build of a 34 foot flat bottomed fishing vessel (essentially a motorized huge glorified surfboard!) that ended up as a gift to the Hawaiian Preparatory Academy on Hawaii Island.

Must admit I really like Dufour Boats a lot. tbh, If they mage the Draft 20 cm shallower, I'd seriously consider Buying one. Not enough proper Shallow Draft Cruisers being made any more, so it looks like my next boat is going to be an Island Packet 439. tbh, a major part of the decision results from my being Disabled, and with every boat being a compromise, the Island Packet Construction Optians are loaded with Compomise choices, that lean heavily in favour of what I need, to be able to continue Sailing. Leaving the need for very special Custom options being very few needed, if any at all. The result surprisingly, is a new boat working out to be a heck of a lot cheaper than extensively Customising and refurbishing a Secondhand Boat. Obviously that is entirely down to me having Special Needs due to disability, but that such an option for me to be able to live aboard and travel to places, in comfort and safety, is something really special imho. All I need now, is a few more months, and god willing, my Piggybank grows enough to put an order in. Best Wishes and Fair Winds. Bob in Wales. 👍⛵️✨️✨️✨️

One thing missed was that the starboard settee seating surface pulls out such that the back cushions can be laid down to form a “two-fer” sleeper on that side. You can see the rail it slides on mounted to the bulkhead forward of the settee. A lee cloth can be attached easily to the overhead handrails above each settee.

I had one in the slip next to me in New York. He was very impressed with it, but I went out on it. It sailed horribly on every point, and had a very uncomfortable motion. Like most of the Island Packets I have seen it spent a lot of time at the dock. It did have a huge interior. The early boats had concrete and iron punchings ballast.

We almost bought an IP 27 back in the day when we were moving up from our prior boat. Totally impressed by spatial and build qualities. Ended up going in another direction (Beneteau First 325), but the IP was under consideration because of the quality and roominess. A bit surprised that this one has been let go a bit. More used to IP owners really taking pride in their boats and keeping them in Bristol condition. Certainly this one could be reconditioned without too much trouble.

Again, a treasure! Cap’n, you and Randy have a knack for finding amazing value-for-money opportunities! This boat needs nothing that a lubber like me couldn’t do! For a reasonable cash outlay, I could sail off with a very viable, safe, comfortable and well-appointed cruiser! No negatives (to my eye). The only downside is the accommodations are limited -but only in comparison to significantly larger vessels. Since my beloved Westerly’s are hard to find this side of the pond, the IP just may be my preferred brand. Again, I thank you!

Island Packet builds a good quality boat. Everything on the boat is quality and solidly built. The only negative about Island Packets and the 27 in particular is that they are SLOW. There was an Island Packet locally and all I can say about the boat's sailing ability is that I could literally sail rings around it with my Allied Princess 36 ketch and the Princess does NOT have a reputation as a sprightly sailor. The IP is very well built and a decent cruiser if you don't mind motor sailing.
