What a great harvest! And what a wonderful way to encourage people with very small growing spaces what can be accomplished in just 2 gallon buckets. Nice!

What a fantastic harvest! I've been growing potatoes in 5 gallon buckets for a few years and never get that good of a harvest. Those tiny ones can be planted and grown as well. I have an experiment going, I decided not to harvest and left the potatoes to grow another season. The foliage is still green and healthy, but I can't wait to harvest this time.

Pretty good haul. I think your haul would have been even bigger had you waited for the top growth to die off. You probably could have replanted any that was putting up shoots or green and got more potatoes out of that. I've grown full sized potatoes in 10" pots that are 10" deep. Averaged around 2 pounds a pot. And any supermarket potato that sprouts will grow. I've planted a few Russets that way.

Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! My 1st time watching your channel and I have been considering this for a long time now. Thanks to you I’m doing this this week! I have 13 5 gallon buckets left (I grew peas (✅) and I have cucumbers in another one that are going CRAZY! I’m doing them vertical this year. So I’ll get busy prepping some buckets for potatoes. Did you fertilize? What soil? I’m in Utah so I’m hoping I can do this. My heart is in it so that counts for something right? Seriously thank you kind Sir.
@citylotgardening6171Ай бұрын
@@Nana2KCASBO we basically reused our garden soil with some potting mix added to loosen up the soil , we amended the soil with Bone Meal , Wood Ash , and organic Tomato and Vegetable fertilizer. I would add that this variety is indeterminate so that could have been why we had a nice harvest from such small pots . I also have Sarpo Mira indeterminate potatoes planted in 5 gallon buckets the tops are around 5 feet tall I'll be doing a harvest video on those soon and it's appearing that they may be our best container harvest yet so stay tuned friend and thanks for watching 👍
@citylotgardening6171Ай бұрын
@@Nana2KCASBO with your short growing season left might I suggest Yukon Gold variety potatoes if you can find them they are a determinate potato that finish in 90 to 100 days after sprouting above ground you may also want to wrap the bottom of your buckets in hardware cloth and bury the buckets 2 to 3 inches in the ground your potatoes will grow safely inside the buckets and the roots can grow down into the ground and get more nutrients , thanks again for commenting and watching friend 👍
@Nana2KCASBOАй бұрын
@@citylotgardening6171 I’m in Utah and that’s a very common potato (I can always go north to Idaho not so far away too😁) I’ll do the wire outside of the bucket and bury them as our yard has been attacked by VOLES and if I’m going all this work I’ll be damned if I’m going to feed them anymore! So I’ll cut them in 1/2, wait till they “scab” over then finish doing the burying. Idk if I’ll have enough time to get a cycle out of them but I’ll do my best and let you know! Thanks again for the great ideas and information. If I do not succeed this year I’ll prep for the spring for sure 🥰

How many potatoes did you plant in each pot? Also, are you able to reuse the soil once all the roots are pulled out, like mixing it into another batch of soil?

@@karenjoy7557 the plants did flower but they only had a few flowers on them I guess because of the blight that's why I harvested them because of the severe blight and I needed these pots for my strawberry plants lol , this is our third harvest this year of potatoes we have over 40 lbs so far from 5 gallon buckets and from our raised beds that we replanted with yukon golds again that we will harvest in October that's why we harvested these small ones when we did 👍
