Just acquired an intact 11month old GP, he barks endlessly........we have 28ac, and he just runs and runs and runs.....we weren't ready for this..at all. You're so right, they aren't bred to be a house dog. I wish you had this video up about 5 months ago. If he can find a way to get free, he'll do it. He stays only when he wants to eat, then off he goes. He would rather lay on snow and ice outside than be in a warm house. When he does finally come in, he paces endlessly to go back outside. He NEVER comes when he's called, he will just start running and barking. I think he thinks he's protecting us. Bad decision on our part to get him....I LOVE the dog, but he's definetley too much for us at age 73 & 75. Got him up for adoption for his own good. It's all about him being happy than us wanting companionship. Wish him luck to find a home that knows what GP are all about. We had an Irish Wolfhound for 12 years until he passed. He always stayed around the house, didn't bark, was a love bug. The GP is not like that at all. We screwed up, it's not the dogs fault at all, he is who he is.

Pyrenees like to wander. They are better-able to breech a fence than a goat and the way you test if a fence is goat proof is to throw a bucket of water on it and if ANY water gets through, it won't hold a goat (or Pyrenees)!

We are on our 4th Great Pyrenees, they are Wonderful Guardians and we have a small farm that's completely fenced and gated. Never had issues with any of them. But they have to be trained and worked with. They are wanders, and can travel for miles before realizing it. We've never had a problem with ours, but we are always reminding everyone to close and chain the gate. They can open gates and doors, so we add a extra security, by chaining the gates. They protect our chickens, turkeys, horses, goats and our Toy dog's. They are very protective of young children, we have 8 grandchildren. They need to have something to watch over.

I begged my friends not to get a Pyrenees puppy. They live in a tiny 2/1 house with a tiny "fenced" in yard. The little ball of white fluff won. Well, they're in their 40's and I'm in my 70's so of course they know better than me. Keepin' it real here in Brevard, NC. Hugs, Antie E.

I'm in Morgan County and we have wandering Pyrs constantly! The last one was on my road and it took us 3 days to catch him. Lord knows how long and far he'd been wandering, he was a mess. They're smart as a whip and wont go near a trap. Three days to gain trust and then snagged him with a leash which he did not appreciate, but after some much needed medical care he headed North through rescue and is living the good life. You are spot on with your advice! Thank you for trying to help that baby and getting the word out❤

BTW: No one should ever take in a breed without studying up on what is required to take care of it effectively. I have done this prior to every dog I’ve owned, including this one.( as a matter of fact, it was actually a requirement to my adopting her by her former “ mom”.

I have a great pyr. His primary job is watchdog, but he's a fine pet. The only thing that makes a great pyr doable is if you live in a very rural place. I cant imagine one in a "neighborhood".

Oh my lanta… I steer clear of Knoxville as often as possible. I know where you were, and I can’t imagine trying to wrangle a GP at that intersection 😔 We had a neighbor once that had a GP with a couple of ducks as his livestock 😂 his name was Buford. Sweetest dog in the world, but he used to run the roads (probably because he was BORED) and he showed up fairly regular at my parents house. He used to steal moms welcome mat, drag it into the front yard and nap on it 😅

There’s several Pyrs around here most of which play Houdini on a fairly regular basis. A fence is not a deterrent to any Pyr down here.

Good analysis of a GP. I've had mostly German Shepherds and now have a GP here to guard sheep , I'm constantly shaking my head and saying " He's no German Shepherd". He's young ,so hoping for him to get it. A heart of gold however.

Oh my Patera I know Farragut well. I was a Home Health nurse for most of my career and I traveled that area constantly. I loved it. Nothing but rolling fields and farm land. Now the traffic is mind boggling and I hate driving that area for any reason. I pray someone is able to catch the dog in order to protect it. You're one in a bazillion.

OMG, I got so upset when your video started -- I was afraid something had happened to one of your dogs. I have 2 pyrs now, but I had one a few years ago, my first, and it was a bigger learning curve for me than it was him. Once while on leash he bolted after a deer and disappeared -- I finally found him the next day, leash caught on a log, just a few hundred yards from the house. Another time I the upper section of my gate broke and I foolishly didn't fix it promptly. Well, he tried to clear it but ended up stuck on top. To get him down, I put an inverted tub in front of him, walked around to the back gate and lifted his hundred-pound butt until his feet touched the tub and he was able to get free,

I trained my Bernese Mountain Dog Shepherd mix to be my medical alert dog. She started at 10 weeks and was a great learner. I never had any problems of disobedience. She has been on many flights, took a train, a Greyhound bus, city bus, never any problems in the hospital with me, stayed in recovery, was with me during x-rays, mammograms. I couldn't be more proud of her. She saved me six times and once from being a robbery victim. Yes she is a big dog for some of the things we've been through. She's retired now so just for curiosity I had a DNA test done since she originally came from a animal shelter and to my amazement she's not a Bernese shepherd mix although she looks like one 100 percent. She is a Great Pyrenees Shepherd mix. Now her whole life she has had our acre of land fenced in on a dead end road with 3 other Great Pyrenees that were our neighbors. I never thought she acted like one of them. The more I hear about them I am amazed. The 3 on my road fit the description. She is a moody dog and guarded our outside cats, and my foster raccoons squirrels, deer and possum from the coyote along with me when I was in the flower bed. Only once had she got out of the fenced area and that was because I passed out and she jumped the fence to get help from a neighbor. Clearly the best dog I have had. I still laugh when thinking she is a Pyrenees mix and not a Bernese mix.

Thank you. My girl is turning 4 in February. Anatolian x Pyrenees. She’s always been a calm girl & raised with the goats, & other livestock & she’s incredibly smart & very capable of thinking on her own. Her first 3 years I spent supervising & guiding all her activities. That is necessary. She is big, beautiful, smart & basically a gentle dog. I chose carefully when I picked a breeder too. I wouldn’t trade her for anything. She’s an amazing girl. I also wouldn’t recommend her breed to a novice.

Thank you! We have owned several Anatolian crosses, a full blooded Anatolian Shepherd, and currently a Great Pyrenees. They were failed lgd's and they take constant training and must have a job. They can out think most owners because they have hundreds of years of breeding to be thinkers and prevent something happening to their charges. We have a huge yard and lunge lines set up because the neighborhood only allows 4 for fences. Many neighbors walking the paths behind our house have gotten very attached and always say hi to our dogs, who eagerly say hi back. They are so different from other breeds, you really have to be on your toes all the time.

Darlin' that is a wonderful wonderful point that you made in this video. We have a small farm ourselves which is unfortunately no longer working one because I developed Parkinson's about 15 years ago. So I slowly scaled our little operation back until we finished up a couple of years ago with our Christmas tree operation. But we also had livestock, and a collection of rescued dogs. I always used to say that the Angels brought them! We mostly had German shepherds and I mean really broken (both physically and mentally) German shepherds that most would have never taken on. We also had a border collie and the foxhound but other than that they were shepherds. When nurse back to health all of them were gorgeous animals but neglected and many were abused severely so required a long-term mega commitment with a capital c. The angels drop them off at the right spot... in a place that provided a lot of space but also had a family with the time and fortitude to keep working with them and loving them no matter what. As I mentioned before we let the farm operation dwindle back and the number of critters do the same until 2 years ago our last Shepherd passed away. Several months later I received a call from my oldest dearest friend that another one of her buddies from a town about a hundred miles away from us had taking in a Great Pyrenees but needed to find a new home for her. They already had two Mastiffs but took the Pyrenees in a year prior because of a severe neglect abuse situation with another owner. They kept things together for a while but then the Great Pyrenees and one of the Mastiffs got into it and the lady of the house got very very hurt in the midst of it. They were good people and devastated but knew that the Great Pyrenees was not working and so my friend advertised us as dog whispers so we ended up with a Great Pyrenees, not knowing anything about the breed. We were the dog's fourth home. Almost a year and a half now and we are still doing our best acclimatimg to this breed. It is an understatement to say that a Great Pyrenees is very headstrong! This is definitely the most unique breed we have ever even been around or had any experience with and that's saying something between my husband son and I. I concur that nobody should adopt one of these dogs unless you are ready to commit a lot of time, has the patience of Job, a lot of space with a secure 6 ft fence, and definitely a job for them to do... just like you said in your video. I'm happy to say that everything is going well with our "little" girl. My son moved back home to help me out but mostly he's animal caretaker! We have five fenced in acres with sturdy 6 ft fencing that we check all the time. And within that five acres enclosure we have two large barns which keep her very busy. My son runs with her 2 to 3 times a day on top of that and yes she still barks all night long. And for anyone that might still be reading this that's actually bred into them to scare away predators. It doesn't bother us though, it's like white noise and our neighbors are far enough that we don't have to worry. I didn't mention but she also had major aggression issues when she came. With all the dogs that we have rescued and I mentioned that they were some hardcore cases in that bunch, I've never been bitten by a dog, not once... not even a growl. That record was broken at age 62 when I was treating her for an inner ear infection when she came here. I noted that you fed your dog separately. Our dog still has food aggression issues that we continue to work on slowly and gently. She's as sweet as a peach 99% of the time but dear God she can turn into cujo very quickly. So your adamant warning is a wise one. It actually should apply to ANY dog but especially this breed. I wish you all the best on your farm, with your family and in all your critter adventures! Thank you for taking the time out of your busy day (and I know it's busy) to help educate all of us. Bless you!

Girl, I know of what you speak. When I was a teenager (1980s), my mother received a border collie puppy as a gift. Problem was we lived in a congested suburb and my mother was an elementary school teacher. No one had the time, nor the experience to train him. It completely ruined him. He turned aggressive as he got older. Wouldn't let anyone but family in the house. He ended up having a stroke and had to be put down. My mother has never had another pet of any kind.

Our two pyr mixes know our farm and it's boundaries well, usually stay on guard right next to the house. But when coyotes appear, IT'S ON. Both pulled a Houdini last night because of coyotes and wounded deer. With all the rain lately there are parts we can get at right now, and it's where both species like to be and our dogs know that. Couldn't get them back it for anything, and our coldest night this season. But come dawn, there they were. Sleepy and full as ticks. Obviously found a downed prey animal. They were quite happy to retire to their bad weather room to sleep off all the excitement. Thankfully the property is large as is that of our neighbors. who know them and appreciate the work they do to keep coyotes away from their cows. Still makes for a stressful night. Hope the pyr in the video makes it's way back home too.

Yes Sister!! I have Anatolians and a Maremma. The Maremma is the least likely to wander. I committed to working with him in the field. It was hard, but a dedication that was necessary. I have never had a dog dig out, but there is hotwire 6" from the bottom of the fence that they all were introduced to at a young age. I know not everyone can run hotwire, but these dogs respect it and have never challenged any fence (we are very lucky and know it!). People think you can just put a dog in the pasture or whatever and think it's instincts will take care of it and it's charges. UGH! So frustrating at times! And no 2 dogs are alike. Prayers that the stray found it's way home and the owner was found.

Thanks for trying to save the dog, I know how difficult it is to catch ANY dog on a mission of running in freedom. I adopted a beagle coonhound mix from my local shelter in 2017. The shelter claimed that a family with young kids had him but no longer had time for him so they turned him over to the shelter. He supposedly was 2 years old. Well he was NOT that old, my vet thinks he was only a year old. Sadly he has the most severe case of separation anxiety I have ever seen in a dog. Not only that he is a RUNNER as well as an escape artist! I had to install a 6’ welded wire fence INSIDE my 4’ chain link fence to keep him in. The first couple of days I had him, I would put him in his harness and clip him on a tie out cable. I had gone next door to help my elderly neighbors with their TV. The dog could see me but when I went inside the house he started howling. I went out and shushed him, then went back into the house to finish. I came out and the harness and cable were dangling from the 4’ fence. My dog was running laps around my neighbor’s backyard. Thankfully he didn’t jump their fence and take off. I have tried everything possible to train him and deal with the separation anxiety to no avail. Whatever these people did to this dog will never be undone! 5 years later and he’s still a runner! He has gotten out about a dozen times and it’s been a nightmare trying to catch him but I won’t abandon him like his previous family and the countless people who adopted and returned him have done. I know he was returned multiple times because my vet was familiar with this dog even before I brought him in. The girls said had I not kept him, he probably would wind up euthanized.

I hope that beautiful dog makes it home safely, too. I’ve got a Pyr I adore and she is the most interesting challenge to train. I had Australian Cattle Dogs before and she is a 180! But so smart in a wise way. I think Pyrs learn through experience and observation first but they can be trained with positive reinforcement, as well. I appreciated all that you mentioned and I would add that people who put LGDs in small animal pens are just as bad as people who expect them to be Golden Retrievers. They need a ton of exercise and they will get bored, naughty and try to escape if you confine them in a tiny pen with livestock.

Im glad my blacklab boarder collie doesnt bark. Very well trained but it took a long time to train. I get it often on fb the my dog dissapeared. And lucky that my town tends to pick up the runners and keeps them safe till they can find the owner. Great job atleast trying to help out. Keep safe.

As an additional comment/question: I had a young, male, GP that was a rescue. He’s the one I rehomed to a farm. He was neutered and had double dew claws. He appeared to be full pyr, show class style. He could legit jump 7feet. I have a 6ft privacy fence that he could clear from the ground with ease and grace. I had ~never~ seen a pyr do that. Mine had all been “more grounded.” Are there other pyrs who can do this?

The sad thing is people who get a GP as a pet and don't have a clue what they are getting into will surrender them. So many GP are in need of fosters and help finding a furever home because the people decided that they are too big, shed too much, bark too much.... It's so sad. My first Great Pyrenees was the best and smartest dog I've ever owned or meet! We got him from a goat farm we're his parents worked. I worked from home so I could spend all day working with him. He was content watching over us, his sheep 🐑 but I know if I wasn't there with him he would have been bored and restless and would have gotten into a world of trouble! Thank you for posting about knowing what you're getting into. If you put the work in you'll have a great companion, if not it's not the dog who is bad!

Been on both sides of this issue for sure. I can count on both hands the times I've caught dogs on our property, had to call animal control to pick up. Most were returned to it owners quickly with happy outcomes. One of our three dogs is a GP/ Golden retrv.mix from an adoption -rescue organization. He escaped to the next farmers property daily for months when we first got him despite training. My 17 yr.old daughter was told by the farmer firmly that the dog will be dead soon because the horses will eventually kill him. He was just being honest with her . So we got a A list professional training with E collar company and she learned to handle him. That was 5+ yrs. ago and we are very happy with him. He comes when he is called without a collar even if there are deer standing in front of him. He still goes after small animals like this summer when he killed a rabid raccoon but I feel very protected with him around. He would go after a bear as well as the Amazon man if I let him.

Gurrl , I 💯% agree with you!! I have 2 LGD's Pyr dogs. My male never had even attempted to get out away from his livestock until our female went into heat. He was on his way to getting fixed but we ended up have to trap him in a smaller area to keep him contained until 1st he had gotten neutered and 2 we could rework our fence. It was a daily struggle for a little bit but finally he went back to his normal self, we now have 8 puppies that are here and every person I talk to that wants 1 of these puppies I am doing a in depth interview because they need to be prepared for what it is to be a Pyrenees owner. Its no joke and lots of work. Now in saying that they are 1 of the best dogs we have ever owned but they are a lot of work getting them trained, they are very independent thinkers. And they bark ALL the time LOL But I have not lost 1 animal due to predators since having our LGD. DO YOUR RESEACH first!!!

Our GP is 7 mos and also started being food aggressive. Not to people but all the other animals. She hasnt bit any but she barks and snaps at a few of them. She also has started trying to play a little too rough with the younger goats. So we have to correct her constantly now and seperate at feeding time. She has always lived with the goats since a puppy. I think she is still a big puppy and wants to play. With our predator issues at a new/bigger farm, I really need to get another LG dog. I am wondering if I should get another GP or just get another breed. Also wondering if she had another dog to play with, if she would quit trying to "play" with the goats :/

Excellent video with sound, real world experience with GPs. I grew up with a variety of dogs and researched GPs extensively before we got a puppy. All the reading and talking with both breeders and owners helped me understand their needs, behavior, and tendencies. HOWEVER, the real education started with getting that first puppy. For a whole variety of reasons, they are not a breed for most people. As stated in other comments, that’s why so many end up in shelters. I’ve owned two GPs and sadly just lost the second one about two months ago. I absolutely love GPs, my favorite breed!

I have 3 LGD'S , 2 of them are Great Pyrenees and Anatolian Shepherd cross,, the best dogs we've ever had,,,before we got them 6 years ago as 8 week old pups, my chicken flock had been picked off a chicken a a time by coon and possums ( all the while being caught in live traps),, started over with the chicks,,, fast forward now I have PLENTY of chickens and my boys protect them along with turkey, ducks ,rabbits and the herd of cows... my boys are the best as far as protectors for the livestock and for me too. They are always there when a calf is born,, they let me know exactly where the baby is 😀

I agree with you 💯%. I have two Anatolian Pyrenees dogs on my farm. They are one and two years old and still in training, of course. They are turning out to be awesome loyal guardians for myself and my livestock. I've been fortunate not to have any escapes, but it pays to have a very sturdy tall fence in place with these L.G.D.'s, before you even bring them home.

Heelers are the same way. They are not always as driven as those you mentioned but depending on the bloodline, you could be getting yourself in VERY deep if you don’t know what you’re taking on. And yes, like you, I’m talking to myself as well!

When you said he went to the bank, my whacky mind went to: He went to the bank to make a milkbone withdrawal. Seriously, I pray he'll get home safely. You are a good person to try to help him/her.

Patara, you are so right. We moved and adopted a German Shepherd to protect the home and the family.{ The farm land around Farragut sounds like our farm area. It is so sad, 30 years ago over 100 small farms now down to 14..} We started training her at 8weeks. She is 8 months old now and we sent her at 5 months for professional service dog training. Angel is a huge commitment and we admitted we needed help. Like you say, "No shame in the game." For our family it is best to have a well-trained dog that is obedient. The daily training continues it is full time but she is a great addition to our family. We admit we WERE agriculture farmers and learning how to care and maintain larger animals is a learning process. I pray they found that young puppy.

Bless you for trying ! It's heartbreaking when you can't help them. I carry a leash, water and treats in the car, doesn't always work tho. I open my car door talk sweet and usually dogs hop right in...muddy feet and all :) This seems to happen to me alot or maybe I'm the only one around but I've returned numerous dogs to owners...as well as a milk cow and several ducks that had crossed a busy road ! I've had at least 5 dogs come to my house that were lost. I guess they were spreading the word that my house was the place to be ❤

Love the sign…😆We had livestock dogs for decades. They were our best partners and our worst enemies. You GOT to do it a certain way or disasters happen and boy we had a few even though we did our best. This is one of many stories about loose PYR I’ve seen since last year. What I see is this breed has become victim of recent popularity. We live extremely remotely and even one of our neighbors has an unemployed “wandering” PYR. It doesn’t get loose often but it picks up other loose dogs and leads a marauding pack when it does. That’s why I keep a pellet pew pew by the door…they get stung and usually don’t return. And yea those on Facebook notify the neighbors but I’m not on it. I spend thousands on protective fencing for my investments and my dogs stay home. That little rooster is so darling!

I'm in a situation where I was gifted a 2 year old female Pyrenees by my adult grandchildren after my 2 old Labs died. The reason why I kept her with me in my house and my very secure yard is that she has hip dysplasia. She can barely even run and a walk around the block has her limping by the time it's over. I have her treated by a vet and she's happy to guard my chickens. She's the sweetest dog I've ever had but if not for her physical problems I wouldn't have kept her. She does have a mind of her own and I only let her bark outside for 20 minutes to a half hour at one time. She seems satisfied with that and always comes in willingly when it's time.

You are so right Patara. We raised different breed dogs all our lives. Most people do not do research on the breed and then catastrophe is just waiting to happen. Cant wait to see your finished backsplash you have been working so hard on. We had friends that put those tiles on their ceiling and painted it white. It looked so pretty. Cant wait. Always love your channel.

My Belle can open doors and gates. We have to bolt the doors and put a piece of metal through the hatch to keep her from flipping the gate latch. In fact she pushed out a window air conditioner so she could get into the house. Too smart for her own good. But we do love her.

We have 2 Black Mouth Curs. My mom just wants to take them walking in the woods off leash. We settled by fencing in 4 acres and me constantly reminding her that if they pick up on some prey, they’ll be 5 miles away before they realize they’re lost

Our 2 girls are always fed in different areas. Nahla (the baby) can be a real b with and itch when it comes to her dish. And this has just started since she turned a year. we're still training her with the sheep. Hubby can't understand why she needs so much training. but she does and I am willing to do it. we have 400 plus acres and the girls do roam it at night walking the perimeter. I hear barking and don't worry unless it's the Mom come now bark. As you train your dog they train you as well to pick up on their barks and their mannerisms.

I had a male miniature dachshund, and he was food aggressive towards people and animals, so when I got Lucy ( rockie had to be put down and Lucy's 11 will be 12 on Easter Sunday rockie was 24) anyways, I had 3 grandkids at that time, so we bring Lucy home at 5 weeks old and when she ate I'd pull her ears, tail, I'd mess with her feet anything I thought two babies less than 2 would do and she's fine. Thank you for sharing your animals with us and your wildlife.

Again you are right on love! Now, back up a bit please. I almost lost my rollups when you recommended Aldi's pancake mix. I thought no it cannot be. Not my girl! I will be 81 next month just so you can relate! I immediately bought a box and made them for me and my 84 year old husband. WE GOBBLED THEM UP AND PUT ANOHTER BOX ON OUR STORE LIST! So easy at this stage of life! BIG HUGS and keep on keeping on the faith!!!
