Great Releases For Record Store Day/Walmart's Black Friday Sale is a bust!

In this video, I show and discuss records that will be available for Record Store Day Black Friday 2023 from the Elemental Music Label. I show titles such as Bill Evans "Tales," Chet Bakers "Chet's Choice," and John Lee Hooker's "Live at Cafe Au Go Go." I also discuss what's going on with the Walmart Black Friday sale so far. For the last several years, Walmart has had incredible sales on their complete stock of vinyl. What happened to that? I discuss it and share my thoughts and frustration.

This year it seems like Walmart started their Black Friday sale way earlier than normal. In addition to the select $15 bunch, which was a disappointment, they had a lot of stuff marked down online. Some of the prices were heavily discounted, but seem like they were for a short period of time. Luckily I checked early last week and picked up a copy of the Mobile Fidelity One-Step Eagles On The Border for $60.52! I hope they still do the full in-store $15 for Black Friday weekend, but I won't hold my breath.

I love how you filmed going through the Wal Mart bins - very exciting I felt like I was standing next to you - I worked Music Retail for 25 years and I was wondering maybe the employee designated for that sale task did not complete so come Black Friday I might call them up early like 7AM to see if that $15 Inventory sale is ongoing just in case - I can't believe Black Friday is next week! Love your videos. Just getting back to vinyl. Have about 1000 records mostly from 70's to early 80's. They sound really good. I've started buy some new vinyl. Most are sounding great. However, I recently purchased Dave Mason Alone Again on the MCA label from Acoustic Sounds. You can see there is excess vinyl at the the end of side 1 about 10 seconds before the run off. I tried cleaning. Album cost about $35. Rest of record has just a few pops. Would you return? What is your criteria?

If the record doesn't play correctly and has excessive pops and clicks, I do return the record. Vinyl is such an imperfect format that a few pops are acceptable to me. Skips and flaws in the vinyl aren't acceptable. Best wishes to you. Take care. 🤗♥️

As for Walmart since I am Canadian I do not get to experience what Americans experience at Walmart. Walmart Canada does not sell vinyl in the stores. Well the Walmarts in my area anyways. Melinda - did you listen to side B of the Bill Evans "Tales" before the video? If so, I'll like to ask to your opinion of the sound quality on side B track 1-4. Maybe you listened to side A only like I did first I got it? The reason for my question is that there is significant digital noise on these track. A lot of people has described this on Discogs reviews (I made a sound sample in my latest video). And the problem is not a pressing issue, but clearly a sound processing issue (and therefore should exist on all copies). Thanks for your time & answer - Claus

I did listen to the entire album and I'm listening to it now. I do think that side one sounds better but I still really enjoy side two. I don't hear any digital noise on my system. It's possible that they had to clean these tapes up in some way but I think side two is very good. Thank you and take care.

I love to have multiple édition of the same album, even with CD , because when a new version come out, there's always something new to enjoy on an album you've heard a thousands times before. Edit: I'm not fond of jazz, but you made me curious about it. It's something I might try for a little longer. Since I live in Canada, we don't have access to that kind of Sales because Walmart don't sell records here, but I'm near the state of Maine, so next year I might go and see what is available and if it's worth it, with the exchange, I will buy some.

You're on a roll in this video! 👍👍👍 Bill Evans, Chet Baker, & the extraordinary John Lee Hooker are artists where some of the finest music lives. The OJC release of an all analogue 33 version of the Bill Evans Trio Sunday at the Village Vanguard album is due out in four days; I can't wait to spin that one on my turntable. John Lee Hooker's Live at the Cafe Au Go Go album is a highly regarded album among John Lee's fans. You peaked my interest on that album. 🤔 This year I acquired a red vinyl reissue of John Lee's killer album called Burnin'. It's mastered by Concord Craft Recordings from the original analogue tapes as released in 1962 in Stereo! 😻 It has John Lee's famous song Boom Boom on it and sounds great. It's very well pressed. ❤ John Lee's Boom Boom riff is one of the first blues riffs I learned how to play on guitar. When I play it with bass and drums accompaniment on my electric guitar, I feel like I'm really into the electric blues. 🎸🎸🎸 I have an all analogue reissue of the Speakers Corner John Lee Hooker Don't Turn Me From Your Door album on my wish list. Hope that one comes for Christmas. I don't buy vinyl records at Wal Mart anymore. They demonstrate such a lack of regard for vinyl by not storing it properly. One time they had some vinyl records stored upright, but they were so packed in that I couldn't flip through them. I gave up. A lot of those reissues sold by Wal Mart are digitally sourced, so that's another thing that doesn't thrill me. 😒 Regardless, I hope you will do more blues album reviews. 😎

I would love to do more blues reviews. This is a fantastic John Lee Hooker record. It feels like I am in the room listening to the performance. It's a killer line up and Otis Spann is fantastic too. ♥️♥️♥️ I also love the Bill Evans and Chet Baker titles. They were incredible artists. I agree that Walmart needs to change the way they display their records. They aren't well cared for. 😳 I do enjoy seeing the happiness on people's faces when they are showing their $15 vinyl hauls. I'd heard through the Heady Wax Fiends FB group that a manager was asked why not all of the records were $15. People were returning sealed albums they bought for $15 later on for full refunds.

I'm sorry for the delay in my response. I looked on the record and album cover and neither of them said stereo or mono. My husband even looked for me. To my ears, it sounds like a mono recording. Either way, it's very beautiful. I'm sorry I can't give you a more definitive answer. Take care.

As you say, Walmart may still do all records in the store for $15 a pop, but I doubt it. I'm guessing that they don't want to deeply discount the new reissues of Swift's "1989" and the Beatles blue and red albums. As these hot records are selling well at full price. On the other hand, I've recently picked up several records for $5 a pop at Barnes and Noble, plus the current "free" record event at the Sound of Vinyl. So I'm not hurting.

Records at Walmart are vendor managed so the store can't just mark them down because they are not selling. My store in Northern New York still has a stockpile of this records at $30 a copy.

Last year, Walmart had a sale on vinyl around Black Friday. $15 for all vinyl releases, even double albums. I bought Beatles and Stones doubles and Help!, as a result.

I'm so disappointed because the only RSD Black Friday release I really wanted was "Missing Persons LIVE 1981" and it's been recalled and removed from the RSD List! My local record store owner said he was told to return all copies. He said it's a national recall across the country. Such a shame. I'm a big collector of 80's New Wave and was really excited about that release.

There are many "Black Friday" records online. I bought $110 dollars worth, saving $143. Adele '30' was $10.54; I bought it only because it was so inexpensive. Obviously, online selection expands day by day. I did buy several more, including three Traffic reissues. They all were actually less than $15. There were a few Tone Poet jazz selections also. I, too, am hoping for the in store $15 records. However, I spent my budget for that sale online; they arrived in excellent condition and sound great. I am very happy with the purchases.

The Walmart Black Friday $15 sale on all vinyl seems to be an every other year thing. When they started it in 2020, it was all vinyl, although they featured about 15 exclusive titles as part of it. In 2021, it was only about 15 to 20 select exclusive titles on sale for $15, and nothing else. In 2022, it was all vinyl again, but the number of exclusive titles was only about 10. This year, it’s again only about 10 (or so) select titles, but I don’t believe any of them are ones they haven’t done before, and most of them aren’t even exclusive. The only other difference this year was that they ran the sale a week earlier than in previous years. I wouldn’t hold my breath for them to still do it on Black Friday. If they were going to do it this year, it would have already started.

The only thing I hate from record store day is that if the record is damaged like my elemental Bill Evans from last year the store was sold out of it and I could not ger my money back cause it was opened .

I just checked Walmarts site...only a handful of titles are at $15..major letdown. HOPEFULLY enough people see these types of videos and/or email corporate nicely asking them to put the records all at $15 like in prior years. If they did...great PR for them. As for Adele...yikes thats a ton of records in one store!! I agree...$5 and move them out!! That Chet Baker release looks great...tempting for sure. Thanks as always for the great record videos...keep us posted if you hear of Walmart changing the Black Friday deal back to the way it was done in prior years.

It seems the Adel observation was very acute, I bought the album from acoustic sounds for $5.99, because of price and the artist's reputation. the bill evens and John lee hooker albums seem very attractive, I will check them out. .

Adele......Right! It's sad that so many other records were delayed because of all the production emphasis on Adele's album, but then the lackluster interest in it. What an embarrassment. I just wonder about how the rest of the world reacted to it, same as us? I got my CD versions of The Beatles Red & Blue album, still waiting for the records. My copy of the "Red" CD album arrived today and, same as the other new mixes I've heard of "Love Me Do", it's OK but a real juvenile mix to me. Another great video, Melinda!

Yea, Black Friday at Walmart was pathetic, but as it turns out, Amazon had some KILLER deals for GREAT albums for LESS than $15, and some for maybe a little bit more. My budget has dictated as of late to allow me maybe one album a month, as long as it was in the $25 ballpark, but this year I was able to score The Pretty Reckless (two album set) AND Tears for Fears latest album, both for less than $15 each! I might have been able to find quite a few more bargains like that, but a budget is a budget, so I had to reign myself in lest the wife noticed where our money was going......LOL. Hopefully Amazon will give us another decent sale for Xmas so I can grab at least one more HUGE two-record haul (hahaha) before the year is up. I also got myself a Walmart Stevie Nicks album last year. My Walmart doesn't treat their records QUITE so badly as yours does, but they do CRAM their records in tightly, insuring that most of them will come with at least some scuff marks if not scratches. Just checked Walmart for the sale = Nothing. They claim 155 records for $15, but there are only about 5 or 6 and they are the same tired old ones that nobody wants. Saves me a trip to the Walmart.

From what I can tell Walmart is going to be getting out of vinyl. Many Walmarts have cut back their square footage to vinyl. They are not getting the the proper sales per square foot on vinyl. It just isn’t profitable enough for them.

I have mixed feelings about that. I remember as a kid running straight to the music department at our local Kmart and occasionally mom buying us a new record. I love that a discount store carries records. At the same time, Walmart hurts the independent record stores. Maybe they will carry their records online and discontinue them in store. I'm still holding out hope that the entire stock will be $15, because last year it didn't go on sale till the 18th or so. These 10 titles are OK, but I have most except Hendrix and the Grinch. The Ac/Dc, Pearl Jam and Journey, I still have perfect copies from when I was a kid.

Our local Walmart never has any really exciting record deals or specials - I was lucky to get that Beatles "White Album" box a few years ago (their only copy) but nothing else worth my while since - just common (and over-priced) LPs that I'd rather have the original copies of. Proudly avoided RSDs since 2019 and will also avoid this one. Most will be cheaper in time anyway.

I can understand why you don’t like Adele’s 30 or why so many people blame her for that vinyl album pushing back production on other pressings that were supposedly delayed due to ’30’ having so many pressing done. There is a lot of misleading information being put out there by KZbinrs. But the fact is that Adele’s 30 was the best-selling album of 2021 worldwide. It sold 862,000 vinyl copies within that year. In the US alone, it was the top-selling album of 2021, selling over 500,000 copies (all formats). By the end of 2021, 30 had sold 1.464 million copies, with 1.219 million being physical copies (non-digital downloads). Billboard claimed that Adele’s 30 helped boost CD sales and largely contributed to increasing CD sales for the first time in 17 years. Regarding the music, it’s considered Adele’s best and most mature album and is her highest-rated album, even higher than 25. Most of the major music publications and critics gave it some of the highest ratings that year. For me, I liked it. It took several listens because it was not the typical type of ‘Adele’ music most people were used to hearing. But, some of the songs were well written, and the music was beautifully arranged. It was a very mature album, and kudos to her for not just falling back on her back catalog and regurgitating the same stuff as many artists tend to do. But I understand. It’s not everyone’s cup of tea. I do not think it will “end up at the Goodwill store” like someone mentioned in your comments. I can say the same thing about Bill Evans. While I am a big Bill Evans fan and have many of his OG pressings and some newer repressed audiophile LPs, we seem to get a gluttony of Bill Evans’s records every Black Friday and RSD events. I mean, talk about over-saturating. He was a great jazz pianist and composer, but I would love to hear some other incredible jazz pianists like McCoy Tyner, Bud Powell, or Keith Jarrett. There is also Earl Hines and Red Garland. I know there have been pressings from some of these great artists, but nowhere near the level of Bill Evans. Anyway, just my two cents.

I appreciate what you said. I am a fan of Adele, I just don't love that last album. I'm sure it was a success but somewhere along the way they pressed too many of her records. She sold a lot but many cooies are still sitting on the shelves. I disagree that there are too many Bill Evans records but I agree that we need more from Red Garland and McCoy Tyner. I'm a big fan of listening to jazz pianists and will have to look into the other artists. Thank you and take care.

Last year Walmart was a huge deal for all of us vinyl people. I spent a bloody fortune there. I must admit I did suffer a bit of buyer's remorse because I did overdo it. This year? I didn't even bother with a visit to Walmart. By all accounts it was a bust.

Amen about that Adele record. I had heard some of her early stuff and when I saw it at Walmart I made the mistake of buying it. What a piece of garbage! I imagine a lot of those things will end up in a landfill. Speaking of Bill Evans, I just received two of his albums today: "Trio '65" which isn't too bad, and "Symbiosis", which is very weird and I pulled it off before the first side was done. I don't recommend that one at all.

Walmart said that things were a little slower, I wouldnt think that that would affect record sales that much. Melinda talks about good sound very much, so I will elaborate on what she speaks of. Melinda on a video was talking about how live recordings sound better. Its because they use less electronics, like recording the musicians one at a time in most sound rooms. Less electronics always makes better sound. All those buttons they use in the studios makes a slight distortion to hurt sound, unlike live recordings. Like in a car where speakers cant be positioned correctly, like in home speakers, more likely equalizers are used in car audio, where speakers not correctly set need an equalizer to somewhat correct the sound. Well, an equalizer causes some distortion, but once home speakers are set correctly, an equalizer is unneeded. Thats why most high quality amps dont have tone controls that distort sound due to more electronics. Good amps use the best made electronics, that has the shortest wiring in the transistors. Tubes have even less wiring. I believe Melindas speakers have first order crossovers that have the least circuitly for better sound. These speakers require the best speaker drivers, one reason is because first order crossovers have less wiring that can blow up the tweeters, unless the tweeters are very well made. There are speakers with no crossovers that have perfect sound, but without crossovers is very rare for some reason. Second & third more electronics crossovers have not as clear sound & are found in many expensive speakers. Anyway I only like speakers with first order, or no crossovers. Crossovers are needed to prevent speaker drivers sound from overlapping each other too much, but the crossovers makes a little distortion. Melinda's speakers are 2 way speakers that are usually better sounding than 3 way speakers that have an extra crossover that can slightly distort the sound a little bit more than most 2 way speakers. There are speakersd that dont have dome tweeters that have a too thin sound. Great guitars, wooden reeds in horn, wood speaker cabinet, wood instruments, paper that is made from wood the paper used in speaker woofers, silk in tweeters ARE ALL Natural things that makes music sound better. Melinda speaks of great sounding records that usually uses the tube recorded master tape made from natural materials like cotton for great sound, but the master tape wears over time. The master tape cant be kept on a hard drive permanently. God makes sound difficult to achieve for people who loves music for a purpose using the BEST natural materials.
