Mount Gay XO is around $56 at Total Wine here in the US. Doorlys XO is $25, Doorlys 12 is $30, Doorlys 14 is $52, RL Seale 10 is $33 and Plantation XO is $65. So with those pricings, Doorlys and Mount Gay tend to be my picks for a Barbados rums for $60 and under. I haven’t had the Plantation XO yet as at that price I tend to go little more and get Foursquare ECS selections that go for $80 to $130 depending on ECS.

I love Mount Gay XO, but it is on the exxy side. OTOH, Mount Gay Eclipse is quite nice if you just want a drinking rum that's about the same price point as regular rums, and is super drinkable. (available in larger stores in Australia)

I'm no rum expert but while in Barbados on holiday I went to the mount gay rum tour and bought a bottle of the XO as well as two smaller bottles that were aged in newly acquired French oak barrels. I've always enjoyed mount gay as it's not too strong in flavour and is rather enjoyable as a sipping rum-in my ignorant opinion. Cheers for the video

Hello Steve. There is a rum from Barbados which seems interesting but which I have not yet tried. It's Ultimatum Barbados 4 years at 48% at an unbeatable price that I will test next month

Steve, You said in the video that the rum you enjoy neat you don't enjoy in cocktails and the rum you enjoy in cocktails you don't enjoy neat. I agree with this. When I first set out on my journey into rum a few years back, I had assumed I could find one rum that covers both applications well. But I have come to conclude that there are two distinct categories of rum: *sipping rum* and *mixing rum* . To me, the main reason the two rums are not interchangeable is that a good sipping rum has *too much character* for mixing so that it stands out too much in the mix (and, vice versa, the mixing rum has too little character).

Ha, there’s waaaaaay more categories than that. For example, an 5yo Normal aged rum, won’t do the same job as a Dark Rum or White Rum. You stick a White Rum in a Hurricane and it’ll taste pathetic. You put a Dark Rum in a Daiquiri and it’ll be 😬😂. Mixing Rums are probably broken down into 6-8…maybe 10+ Categories. Cos again, you probably wouldn’t put a French White Agricole in a Daiquiri… but you wouldn’t put a Cuban White in a Mai Tai…

We certainly pay less than in GB, but this rum isn't cheap. Definitely not one you just casually pick up. It's a $40-50 a bottle here, when most aged rums are in the $20-30 range. I personally am a big fan of Mount Gay XO though regardless. Great gift for people who you know like sipping spirits.

Hi Steve, I much prefer the idea of buying 1 more expensive bottle than 2 bottles. Cheaper and not so much of a storage issue. I haven’t watched KZbin for a while but I am really enjoying this series.

Steve, Regarding the age of the reviewed rum, you said that you had *heard* it has an average age of 15-year-old rums in it but you *believe* that it might have 15-year-old rums in it but that the average age is a lot lower. Back in 2020 or 2021, the Global Brand Ambassador for Mount Gay said in a KZbin video that the XO Triple Cask Blend is a blend of rums aged 5 to 17 years.

Mixing with Mount Gay XO is a hard call for me on price ($90-100 CAD). I reserve it for sipping (maybe a Corn n' Oil or Rum Fashioned wouldn't feel as wasteful idk). I use the Eclipse for highballs and punches. I think it works really well for those and it's super affordable at $33 CAD (under £20). Then there's the double cask, the Black Barrel, at $60-70 CAD. That's a harder one to mix with at that price, but maybe it's cheaper for you. That's the one you can sip neat much more easily than the Eclipse, standouts in cocktails better like the XO. It is more barrel forward, more oak and none of the cognac of the XO, but that's both a matter of preference and question of whether or not that will show thru in a cocktail. In any case, while you might be looking for one bottle (maybe the Black Barrel is that), the core range exported from Mount Gay is less than $200 CAD (£110) to stock three bottles that each bring something different to a drink or for sipping. If they exported the unaged Silver, I'd say you could probably get away with just having those 4 bottles in your bar and you'd be set! 😂 Edit: I know in more recent videos, you've said your palette has really dried out. I would be curious to see you compare Planation XO and Mount Gay XO again given how much sweeter that Planation/Planteray is.
