We get so used to Bulleid Pacifics on the Weymouth trains that we tend to forget that Weymouth was originally a GWR line, and the main service to Weymouth used to be from Paddington, not Waterloo.

Used to use that line lots when I was a kid in the 70s and 80s. It was usually a DMU or sometimes a class 33.

As the GWR Weymouth services are Standard Class, I forget that First Class on the HST's is declassified. I never went on the Weymouth Wizard HST to Weymouth. What a shame that 2+3 seated Turbos are taking over. They're nice trains don't get me wrong but an HST is the better train on this route. The only problem with the Weymouth Wizard was there were complaints about the engine running which the fumes reached someone's back garden. I believe there was one occasion where the engine was running for the whole 5+ hours! I couldn't do that if I was the train driver.

Hi! Im from Argentina, and we will visit UK in august 2018. We rent a department in Weymouth and we going to Paigton. How is the service from Weymouth to Paigton? We cant take the trains in Castle Quarry? Google maps say "yes" and National rail web say "no".. Sorry about my very bad english.

H.S.T's are not that rare down to Weymouth. Initially B.R/RAILTRACK/NR didn't want them down at Weymouth because if a unit broke down, it is hard to rescue that unit, unless it had a connector under the nose of course. This was b4 thunderbirds. A 442 could be towed "dead" by another 442, as could say, a dmu unit, but H.S.T.s are problematic should they fail. However, i think Virgin/Intercity etc, ran a unit or two down to Wey, via Dorch' South possibly back in the 90's, but the 47's were favoured. I don't know if anyone remembers a railtour to Wales from Weymouth via H.S.T which i was lucky to b on. The unit returned to Bristol via Dorchester South/Reading as i recall. I have a film of this event but it was shot by Mike Penny, who i have no contact with now. If i can upload it, i will.

So let me get this straight, you take the Caledonian sleeper from Euston to Inverness, you then catch an easy jet flight from Inverness to Bristol and now you caught the HST to Weymouth. You might as well do the penanze to John o groats challenge by train, oh wait Done that.
