My 1st time filming in Gloucester on the Gloucester to Newport Line via Chepstow featuring Great Western Railway, Transport For Wales and CrossCountry Trains.
Plus also featuring at the end is the 'Flying Banana' HST Farewell Tour as well which although the final HSTs left Paddington on May 18th, 2 weeks before filming however the Farewell Tour was the final time the Long Distance HST travelled over the Great Western Railway Network.
Gloucester first opened as a terminus on the Birmingham and Gloucester Railway in 1840 with connections from 1844 via the Cheltenham and Grand Union Railway from Swindon via the Golden Valley Line however in 1851 became a through station when the link from the South Wales Railway from Newport via Chepstow arrived.
Todays layout dates from 1977 although originally was Gloucester Central with another station originally opened by the Midland Railway as Gloucester Eastgate although the latter was closed in 1975.
Trains heading towards Cheltenham Spa can reverse here served by Great Western Railway services from London Paddington or Swindon via the Golden Valley Line or services via the Birmingham to Bristol Line with the latter joining up with the South Wales Main Line heading towards Bristol Parkway.
CrossCountry Trains call here however only served by Class 170s from Cardiff Central to Nottingham via Derby. Passengers for the fast services have to travel to Cheltenham Spa or Bristol Parkway to change for CrossCountry routes with Aberdeen furthest North and Penzance to the South West.
Transport For Wales provide hourly services to Cheltenham Spa from Maesteg or occasional services terminating from Cardiff Central via Platform 3.
At the time of filming the station layout was due to be changed with the works due to be carried out by Network Rail.
Also Gloucester can also act as a diversion route for GWR services from London Paddington to South Wales when the Severn Tunnel between Severn Tunnel Junction and Patchway on the South Wales Main Line which will be electrified as far as Cardiff Central.
