you cant just stop a speeding boat right next to a person, you have to slow right down or theyd have sailed right passed him. They also wouldnt have wanted to alert the shark that theres another possible meal in the water, by having the propellers on full blast, & creating noise & bubbles etc. The man stayed still & the shark went away - if hed have started frantically swimming & screaming it may have made the shark pay more attention to him, instead of the kayak.

Scary. I was freediving off the south shore of Oahu, Hawaii when a boat passed very close to me obviously unaware I was on the surface. The boat didn't scare me nearly as much as the lure they were trolling did. Two treble hooks whizzed by within inches of me.

Many years ago I was doing a checkout scuba dive with my sister in Monterey Bay. She was facing me when out of nowhere (due to low visibility) a great white🦈 swam behind her in front of me. It was huge, probably 12 feet long. She did not see it. Thankfully, it showed no interest and kept moving. I signaled her to head for shore. When we got in, she told me my eyes were as big as silver dollars when I was signaling to go in. So, I told her why. It was then I noticed the sea lions were all on their rooks and not entering the water. This happened early in the morning. Watching the local news in the evening it reported a surfer 🏄♂️ went missing around noon (about a mile down the beach, where we had been scuba diving) and all that was ever found was his surfboard with a big bite taken out of it by a shark. We continued our check out dive the next day, down by Carmel instead.

I read the kayaker's report of this online long before I saw this video, and the video matches up exactly as described in the written account. Good Lord, it must have seemed like an eternity waiting for that sailboat to pick him up. Although it doesn't show the initial strike, this encounter looks to be more of a territorial attack than a predatory attack, but it's hard to tell for sure.
@casarnp10 ай бұрын
Yes seemed entirely territorial. No predation as evidenced by the shark ignoring the man in the water. More research going into the territorial aspect of strikes and attacks by sharks.

It didnt leave bite impressions in kayak ? Thats fastest way to tell , and how big was kayak 12 ft ? My guess the shark was between 13 to 14 ft which is a massive shark , in video shows good shot of shark next to kayak it looked about 2 ft longer than kayak why i say around a 14 ft white pointer
@seventhsignsoldier26567 жыл бұрын
Yes the 18 footer is believed to be the culprit of the surf beach attacks since 2011 evey 2 years a massive 18 plus ft has stalked surfers near santa Barbara and taken lives , I still believe the shark in video is around 15 ft max which is truly massive still it looks to be a foot or so bigger than kayak , let us know when you find out I am very interested thanks

When you said that and then he dove under you, all I could think is that he's getting ready to hit you from below. Then I watched the video again, and I just don't know how you stayed so calm. I know you attribute it to training, but I think some people have an internal strength and fortitude, that helps you survive extreme circumstances. Well done! So very happy you are ok. I was an open-water diver in Monterey Bay some years ago. Mostly we stayed in the area where the kelp fields were because sharks didn't come into that area where there were a lot of sea lions and seals, and they knew it! Sharks don't like kelp forests. There is NO WAY you could get me out in a kayak in that area now. With the rise in ocean temps, sharks are chasing bait-fish in close to shore now, and that is Great White area! I saw a nurse shark resting on the bottom but that wasn't a threat. Monterey Bay, California, is within the "Red Triangle," (due to shark bites) and bloody water!) an area stretching from Monterey Bay up past San Francisco to about Bodega Bay and out west to the Farallon Islands. We used to fish out there near the Farallons all the time in about 300' deep water for rock cod, salmon during a run, and we'd see a lot of pinnipeds (a favorite food of sharks) all the time. Once I thought I had a huge salmon on the line, it ran way out, I was trying to reel it in and it was heavy, then it stopped. I reeled in just the head of a salmon, and saw a sea lion surface out there, chewing, and saying "thank you!"

I once saw a sealion attack a salmon off of the pier just inside GG bridge outside the Warming Hut cafe. There was an almighty commotion in the water and by the time I got there I saw a salmon pop up to the surface bitten in two and blood everywhere. I was sure I was about to see my first great white and then a delighted sealion popped it's head up and started to devour the fish.

I thought conventional wisdom held that sharks do lurk in kelp beds amidst the seals and sea lions, in search of a meal. It is odd to hear that they actually avoided kelp beds in the past. Shows how little this landlubber knows about the sea.
@spunkmaster6662 жыл бұрын
@@riverbankfisher yes they’ve 100% been observed hunting in kelp forests in S. Africa at least. Stands to reason they’d hunt in N. Cali kelp forests too!
@jamescobrien2 жыл бұрын
Great Whites prefer cold water temps. The water is warmer the shallower it gets. So if you blame great whites coming into shallow water because of "the rising ocean temperatures", then you are a moron. Great Whites do go into kelp forests.

@monroe4444445 жыл бұрын
They did call for help. If you've ever been in a situation like this, you're trying to figure out what you're seeing, your autonomic nervous system is kicking in, which could mean a freeze response. It seems like a long time to us watching it from our sofas, but give these people a break. Also what good would one more person be in the water with a shark? Only someone with a boat could help him, which is what happened.

This has to be the same event - the guy was picked up by the people on the sailboat. All these critics on here have no idea of whether one of the filmer's relatives called the coast guard. And, by the way, I was most impressed by the holes punched into the kayak by the shark's teeth in the picture I saw!
