Great White Shark Warns Irresponsible Scuba Diver

This footage was taken in August 2015 at Humpback Whale Carcass (See video here: • Humpback Whale Carcass... ) in Aliwal Shoal MPA. Last year we anchored a humpback carcass near the reef and, naturally, a number of predators came to feed, including a few great whites. It is quite rare for great whites to visit Aliwal Shoal so a few divers had the privilege of diving with these amazing predators. BUT one of the divers got too close to one of the great whites and tried to grab a hold of the large male's dorsal fin in a stupid attempted to ride the shark. The shark reacts by approaching the diver and letting him know that this is "his house".
Please also note the divers position in the water, first at approximatley 13m then all the way at the surface in less than a minute! The second thing you need to note is the exhalations and lack of inhalations, is the diver hyperventilating? In my opinion, this diver was not experienced enough to be diving with these animals. It was irresponsible of both himself and the charter that took him out.
Diving with a shark is a massive privilege, especially with a great white shark. This kind of diving should not be allowed. It is clear that it changed the shark's behaviour. No one would go and pull the whiskers of a lion - this is the exact same principle.The media loves to put the blame on the great whites but it seems the shark was more than generous with his approach to the diver.
Needless to say, the diver spent the rest of the dive on the boat... and probably had to clean out his wetsuit.

Yeah, anyone who does this is NOT helping sharks. Ocean Ramsey is a big one that people love, but she's actually breaking multiple conservation laws when she's touching great Whites. And by thinking she has some "special connection" with sharks, she is delusional. She has people hand feeding Tiger sharks around her so she can show what "best friends" they are, but really, she is just causing sharks to associate people with food.

@Toxicyz I sense your vast repertoire of knowledge is primarily from movies... I never said sharks like the taste of human flesh. I know that Hollywood has "endowed" sharks with a "roar" and whether or not sharks detest showing their fin on the surface is academic. My comment was made as a tolerance level that this shark showed toward the humans in its home. As whether or not sharks "hate" human flesh was severely tested when the U.S.S. Indianapolis was torpedoed in the Pacific during World War II. 1100 men were on board. From best estimates by the Navy, approximately 150 to 450 men were killed and consumed by sharks. 150 were verified, the balance were "perhaps" devoured after they had died from the ships damage. This was the ship that delivered the Atomic bomb to Tinian Island, where it was a short time later dropped on Japan. I know their skin is like sandpaper....its skin is made up from bony cartilage material. My knowledge of sharks is much greater than you have assumed. In order to avoid showing your contempt and being rebuked further, I suggest you avoid your impetuous behavior...

Yeh, great whites seem to flit between curious and aggressive. Maybe they only become cranky when they haven't caught a seal for a while, so might attack a human then. But it seems that a fed great white is a happy great white, and will even let you take a ride on his dorsal fin.

yup hard to tell if the warning was for disrespecting the safe distance or the whale, the shark acting territorialy to keep those strangers away from its food... maybe both. I don't know if sharks are able to know that the diver will not steal him food I bet he perfectly knows that, and therefore the warning was due to distance, but who knows...
@Badficwriter

@@atxsnf658 Whale meat tends to make sharks act drunk, which is why reckless people pet them or ride them in those waters. Because sharks all take a bite, they're less territorial near the smorgasbord. This shark showed hostile body language after the touch, but may've been too dopey to be more aggressive.

Its basically the same as a dog warning you not to fuck around with its tail. The Shark clearly didn't like being touched and its body behavior after clearly indicated it wasn't happy. However what it did wasn't a attack. It was more of a dude how would you like it if I did that to you, but didn't really attempt anything other than to intimidate the diver. It clearly had no intention of attacking him really physically. Also the Diver is fairly close to the size of that white. White Sharks like most predators don't normally attack prey items or creatures near there size. The potential for harm is very great. So no it was just intimidating the diver for yanking its fin. That's alot of restraint for a animal.

The shark acted in a more communicative and deep way than the diver. By touching the shark, the diver was saying, "I dominate." The shark turned around and said in a most gentle, almost parental manner, "No. No you don't. And don't ever do that again."

First thing anybody who's qualified to interact with Great Whites will tell you is that every shark is different and has their own personality and boundaries. Some sharks are "playful" and some mean business. Being in close proximity to a food source, then swimming toward the animal would almost certainly be interpreted by the shark as competition for the food source. This guy almost won a Darwin Award.

I am a shark researcher with over 5,000 hours experience working with them in their natural habitat. Tigers, Galapagos, sandbar, hammerhead and whale sharks in Hawai'i and great whites of Isla Guadalupe. I am unsure of what you are questioning. If you were Diving on a whale carcass then the likelihood of sharks showing aggression towards anything, even other sharks, is extremely rare if it exists at all. I have been around several dead whale carcasses in Hawaiian waters and have friends and colleagues with much more experience than myself in this matter. A carcass would be a large food source which allows for "enough for everyone" mentality. Whereas, when there is very little food available like there is on shark tours, the sharks become more aggressive roughly proportional to the number of sharks present along with water conditions. Rougher water where white caps are present will oxygenate the water and cause faster and more erratic movement of the animals. Calm water and an abundant food source "usually" make for calmer sharks but never a guarantee of that type of behavior. Sharks, like people, are very curious. The video seems to be unclear on the actions of both the diver and shark but it looks as if the diver tried to touch the shark. Then the shark approaches a diver at the surface. If that is the same diver then it is (should be) a minimum of 3 minutes difference in time due to ascension of the dive including a safety stop. That would make for quite a delayed reaction and absolutely like no other attack that I have witnessed. If the touch at depth did aggravate the shark he would have immediately turned and done something about it. Sharks have no bones in their bodies and can easily touch their snout to their tail. Sharks "skeleton" is completely cartilage and they have even been able to fit between the bars of the cages and enter the cage. That is why the bars on the bottom are spaced further apart than the bars on the sides of the cage. If a shark needs to escape a situation they swim straight down.

Don't forget that these animals have highly sophisticated senses to analyse their prey, What the shark probably did was like sniffing or exploring before attacking. Unless they are highly starved and desperate for food they are cautious of what they eat. Multiple sharks could have triggered a "first come first served" race among them so, these divers were lucky. Sharks also develop personalities and one is more gentle and calm where others more nervous and aggressive. Sharks are also like other predators, they are sensitive to bluff. If it doesn't run, it could be as dangerous as itself. Thinking this shark was warning them is a bit too simple, it was probably provoking a reaction to check the danger level and/or analyzing how good a bite it could be...

Sharks sniff by scenting, lateral line and ampulae... My answer is not retarded. Yours is. The natural prey white sharks hunt are way stronger built than we are. What's going on with the mentality of people? if that keeps on we won't be able to swim at any beach in the world, or get bitten and killed, because predators are preferred than humans. Our anscestors fought their way through forests and jungles to build living room for humans, and now a days some for the sake of adventure are causing a big danger to humans.

Incredible. How this shark was trying to tell the diver in the gentlest way possible (for a shark) how annoyed it was by the diver touching it. Instead of being the savage beast it is (and is entitled to be), the shark decided to be a gentleman. Lots of people know and say dogs are intelligent, apes are intelligent, dolphins or even octopuses are intelligent. But sharks, specially the larger species, aren't stupid, definitely. They are highly highly intelligent creatures. They can be cunning and aggressive when they want to be, and they can be friendly and gentle when they want to be. Tiger sharks are even capable of recognizing a human diver and form a friendship (for a given value of friendship between a shark and a human) with him/her. This means that at least tiger sharks have both an excellent memory and the ability to recognize who does harm to them and who does good to them.

Exactly thats why so many people live from shark attack. Were actually horribly bad tasting compared to a fresh fish or seal. So as scavenger/apex predators most large sharks will try to take a bite out of anything. Even license plates thrown over bridges are routinely found inside sharks. They will usually just bite once or twice then leave. But from a great white that 1 bit many times is fatal.
