Great Big Story

4 жыл бұрын

Soup’s on. Seven people, seven countries, seven soups-and not one single serving from a can. Great Big Story senior producer Beryl Shereshewsky searched far and wide to find how people enjoy their soup around the world. Among them: chanko nabe, a soup sumo wrestlers in Tokyo eat to bulk up; a bird’s nest soup in San Pascual, Philippines, that, as its name implies, is made out of bird’s nests; and ya-ka-mein, a soup served in New Orleans that is said to cure hangovers. Beryl also whips up her own soup using just two simple ingredients: beer and cheese.

Finally my country has been represented. Proud of my motherland Good bless our homeland 🇬🇭🇬🇭🇬🇭🇬🇭🇬🇭🇬🇭🇬🇭🇬🇭🇬🇭🇬🇭 Note: Fufu is a staple dish of the Ashanti tribe of the Akan ethnic group in Ghana. It can be served with different kinds of soup like the palm nut soup, groundnut soup among others.

I'm from Hong Kong, and it strikes me a bit odd that Taiwanese beef noodle soup is considered a "soup dish". While soup is definitely an element of the dish, it's definitely a "noodles dish" more than anything

(i'm taiwanese american) i think depending on the taiwanese restaurant, taiwanese beef noodle soup is either soup-focused or noodle-focused soup. some places really emphasize the noodles ex dao xiao mian + beef soup other places focus on the soup via simmering the beef soup for a super long time.

thing is, in English soup is a broad term that defines many dishes cooked and presented with liquid that other languages have specific words for. In Spanish we have "sopa", "caldo", "potaje" and "puré". In English you may call them all soup, but what we really consider soup is "sopa", the other ones are different dishes for us.

These are all old episodes with a new framing device. Also, pretty sure that no-one at Great Big Story, especially Beryl, actually reads the comments section of their videos. My parents are Guyanese and they too have a dish called "Fufu", which is mashed plantain in a sauce. The funny thing is they're Indian, but the dish is very West African. After realizing this, I began noticing how much African influence there is over Indo-Guyanese culture, especially in food and music.

My 2 favorite Filipino soup: 1.Sopas: it's Spanish for soup, it's a Filipino version of America's noodle soup but with a Spanish name. Instead of noodles we use pasta like macaroni as well as various vegetables like carrots, potatoes, celery etc, and meat, sausages, and cream. 2.Arroz Caldo: it's a Spanish word meaning, Rice Broth. It's the Filipino version of the Chinese Congee but named in Spanish. It's rice cooked in any type of broth, with Shredded chicken, sprig onion, Lots of ginger, pepper, any kind of leafy vegetables like cabbage and it's served with toppings of sliced hard boiled eggs, crispy fried garlic chips, spring onion and a splash of fish sauce or lime.

My favorite soup is Canja. It is a Cape Verdean chicken and rice soup. The broth thicker than regular soup, but not as thick as a chowder (which I also love). I was lucky enough, to have my mother teach me how to make it, just a few years before she passed. My father's uncle taught my mom how to make it, so she could make something my dad grew up on. Canja is best on a cold day with a slice of butter bread to soak up the broth.

The bird's nest soup is only consumed by a few in the Philippines, either they have access to consumable bird's nest in their village, or they are rich and can afford to buy from far areas where the nest is available. Popular and regularly consumed Filipino soup dishes include sinigang (a soup soured by various produce ranging from santol fruit to tamarind), dinuguan (pork blood stew or soup), noodle soups (such as mami and batchoy), and nilaga (beef soup flavored mostly by bone marrow), among many others.

Uhhh that last one remind me one soup that my grandma thought me. It's sweet, you can have it for breakfast or lunch or dessert whenever you want it tbh. My grandma used to make it a lot for my great-grandmother and she told me that it is a poor soup. Really simple to make. You just need hot milk, hard bread (so it gets soft when you put it in the milk) or leftovers bread, cinnamon, a bit of sugar (if you want) and lemon peel. You can also do it with chocolate milk instead of simple milk. It kinda tastes like sweet rice pudding! I enjoy it a lot!

I was about to say that the fufu one looked a lot like funge.. I had to search up to see what were the differences.. They are the same but in portuguese it's translated to funge. It's delicious tbh! When I had for the first time I didn't enjoyed it at all but now I love it and I can eat it without any broth. I enjoy that plain flour taste 😅 The main ingredient of fufu or funge can change (you then just have to add hot water and mix it extremely well until it becomes a paste, at least the Angolan versions are like that). The version of the video I've never tried but now I want it haha 😅

Hello, you missed on the soup from India 🇮🇳. It’s called Rasam and made in almost every house in the South of India. It’s also a comfort food on days when you feel under the weather

India 🇮🇳 soups 🍲 - 1 - rasam - English. Rasam in English. Rasam, chairs, saaru, or Kabir is a South Indian soup, traditionally prepared using tamarind juice as a base, with the addition of tomato, chili pepper, pepper, cumin, and other spices as seasonings. Steamed lentils can be added along with any preferred vegetables. The traditional preparation of rasam is made with tamarind pulp and black pepper- both abundantly and natively available in South India. According to some other historical sources, the origin of rasam is in Madurai and it dates back to the 16th century when the land was ruled by the Saurashtra rulers. 2 - sambar - Sambar is a lentil-based vegetable stew, cooked with pigeon pea and tamarind broth. It is popular in South Indian and Sri Lankan cuisines.
