How a 14-Year-Old Is Fighting Food Insecurity With Cupcakes

Michael Platt had to give up a lot of his favorite activities after he was diagnosed with epilepsy, but he found another hobby that he loved-baking cupcakes. Three years ago, when he was just 11, Michael turned his passion into Michaels Desserts. For every cupcake he sells, Michael donates one to someone who can’t afford to treat themselves. We join him and his parents on a delivery run to a homeless shelter in Washington, D.C.

When my family was on food stamps and were really poor, poorer than we were normally used too, we were always wanting sweets, it made the situation a little more tolerable. People don't seem to realise people with food insecurity want sweet things too. Sweets can brighten up someone's day and help bring them back to a better time. I'm thankful food stamps don't really have restrictions on what you can buy that is labeled: 'foodstuffs'. So we would bake stuff to enjoy. This kid has the right idea for sure.

@@Av-mu3dz we had a oven from 1995 for the longest time till we were lucky enough to afford a new one, but now we are back at the point of not being able to afford much (mom retired from her teaching job) so when our dryer broke, we accepted one from the 70's. Brightside is it still works like a dream, it was built to last. I hope you find a windfall soon that can give your family a decent oven and some comfort, we used a propane cooker for 2 weeks while we shopped for a new oven. If you can, maybe see if a local church can help you out- unless they are gonna be tattletale assholes and call CPS.. I understand if that is a concern of yours.

I love this precious boy and I want to support him. I grew up in a good desert area and we’d have to drive 45 minutes once a month to go get groceries but not everyone has that option. He is doing so much good.
