Sphere - Audiobook by Michael Crichton, read by Ed Asner. Abridgment approved by Mr. Crichton.
A mysterious structure is found at the bottom of the ocean. A highly trained team of experts is sent to investigate. Is it an alien vessel or something else? When strange and dangerous things begin to happen, the Sphere becomes even more mysterious.*
Michael Crichton (pronounced Cry-ton) (1942-2008) Born in Chicago and raised on Long Island New York, Michael showed a talent for writing early in his life and had an article published in the New York Times by age 14. In 1960 he went to Harvard to study writing but was discouraged by a professor who gave him low grades which he thought were unfair. Mr. Crichton switched his major to medicine. While studying medicine he wrote several books that were published under pseudonyms. Though graduating as an MD, he never practiced medicine. You can read about his medical school experiences in his book Five Patients.
He devoted himself to writing and his books have sold over 200 million copies worldwide. The most famous book is Jurassic Park. Mr. Crichton also directed movies including the classic sci-fi adventure Westworld in 1973. Sphere was published in 1987 and made into a film in 1998. He was married 5 times and fathered 2 children. He was a climate skeptic and a believer in questioning what you read or saw on the news.
Ed Asner (1929-2021) was born and raised in Kansas City. He worked primarily in television including The Mary Tyler Moore Show and Lou Grant. Mr. Asner did act in films including: as the main character in the animation Up, Santa Claus in Elf, and as the bad guy in El Dorado with John Wayne. According to IMDB, he appeared in a whopping 410 TV shows and movies (though I didn’t count them). If you’re going to watch anything of his, I’d highly recommend the wonderful comedy The Mary Tyler Moore Show. Or if you're watching with your kids, Up or Elf.
GBOT Review: Story - Good. Reading - Very Good
To see all the audiobooks on this channel click "Videos" on the home page. Check out The Jungle Book. It's one of my favorites, the reading performance is excellent and it's for adults and not just for kids. Read from the original book by Kipling, The Jungle Book is very different than the film versions. The films are good, but this is more mature, in-depth, adventurous and moving.

I love audio books like this! I know someone mentioned that the ambience sound effects got grating, but I adore when audio books include them. I have aphantasia and imagining can become difficult some times. (Ironic considering the imagination speech in this) I’ve listened to other audio reading of books and the only other one I absolutely enjoyed was produced similar to this. It was a reading of Alien. Each character had their own voice actor, and each action had a corresponding sound effect. Footsteps on the metal grate floors, the ship creaking, alarms, sounds of guns firing and capsules falling, even the Xenomorphs screeched, etc. Anyways I adore this reading and it’s one I will definitely be returning to for a relisten.

I listened to this for a while and also checked out the comments. someone said the whole book was on YT, so I went to listen to that instead. it was interesting and I got to where they discovered the sphere, but there was so much bickering and everyone was doing what they wanted to with no one really in charge - and it was so stupid, I just got incredibly bored and came back to this version. and began where I left off. it was just great! Asner does a great job and this abridged version was so much better! sometimes a writer needs an editor, whether he or she likes it or not!! :) 😛

@@arman757who are you telling to listen to the book? I am only asking because the comment you seem to be replying to said they had already listened to the full version and found it hard to listen to and this version better. Is that easier for you to understand or are you just wanting people to stop listening to this one and support your version. Also I have never known a book improve the more people that read from it. What I do know is he does a good job of reading a good book.

Space and time travel possible in the future , unlikely with the way the universe is set up. I am going to put on my Sci Fi hat , which I have just discovered I have, Image that our Cosmos is computer generated and controlled by an outside agency. Then anything becomes possible , something sitting down playing the ultimate game . What fun you could have , throw in a UFO or two , and watch the turmoil.

Yeah, I read the whole book before listening to this. It is severely chopped up, and it's not just abridged, but they cut out parts and then replace those parts with one or two sentences that sound like something written by a 'Cliffs Notes' writer. They dumb it down and simplify it very noticeably.

This is a good reading, but I can't stand Jerry's voice. It's like listening to a 1950's sci-fi movies' idea of how a robot should talk. With terribly long stupid breaks in each syllable. It's painful to listen to. It almost kills the whole story. Thanks for the upload.
