2nd visit to Tottenham Hale on a Friday Morning on the West Anglia Main Line and also interchange with London Underground's Victoria Line
Featuring services from Greater Anglia and Victoria Line
Tottenham Hale was originally opened in 1840 as Tottenham by the Northern & Eastern Railway from Stratford to Broxbourne.
The Eastern Counties Railway took over operations in 1844 and ran the line for 18 years until it was merged into the original Great Eastern Railway in 1862.
The station has been renamed 3 times since 1st opening with the Hale Suffix added in 1875 before being dropped in 1938 however was reinstated on September 1st 1968 on the same day when the Victoria Line opened between Walthamstow Central and Highbury & Islington.
Today all Greater Anglia services to and from London Liverpool Street as well as Stratford all call here for destinations such as Bishops Stortford, Hertford East, Cambridge, Cambridge North as well as Stansted Airport with a few trains a day operating to and from Ely.
The main fleet for most Greater Anglia services are nowadays Class 720s and Class 745s which gradually replaced the Class 317s and Class 379s.
The former Class 317s first began operating in 1982 on the Midland Main Line in and out of Moorgate although spent most of their life on West Anglia Main Line, East Coast Main Line as well as Great Eastern Main Line and temporarily on the London, Tilbury and Southend Line.
They were withdrawn after nearly 40 years of service in July 2022
The Class 379s were dropped in February 2022 due to high leasing costs however a few days after filming on March 12th it was announced that they will move to Great Northern with a new lease owner of Porterbrook.
The station had undergone significant rebuilding in recent years which included a new footbridge for Step Free Access, Station Building as well as adding 3rd Platform
Another factor is that Tottenham Hale is one of 3 stations thats close to the nearby Tottenham Hotspur Stadium home to Tottenham Hotspur FC which opened in April 2019 having originally been at White Hart Lane until May 2017.
The other stations that can be extremely busy on Matchdays are Northumberland Park next station to the North as well as Seven Sisters which the next station to the South on the Victoria Line and served by London Overground Lea Valley Lines.
One thing thats highly unusual is that the West Anglia Main Line platforms are Numbered Platforms 2 - 4 with at present being no Platform 1 which is part of a future provisional if the scheme of Crossrail 2 is ever built.
The proposed scheme would see Crossrail 2 serve Northern destinations such as New Southgate on ECML and Broxbourne running underground via Dalston Junction, Angel, Clapham Junction and Wimbledon to South Western Railway destinations such as Hampton Court, Shepperton and Chessingston South.
However due to the high costs after Completion of Crossrail 1 now todays Elizabeth Line in May 2023 its very unlikely that Crossrail 2 will happen in the near future or if at all.
The main line platforms are Platforms 3 & 4 whilst Platform 2 is used by Shuttle services between Stratford and Meridian Water with the latter opening in June 2019 replacing the former Angel Road station.
Whilst above ground is busy with activity its the same story for London Underground's Victoria Line which operate via Platforms 5 and 6.
All Victoria Line Trains are 2009 Stock built by Bombardier in Derby replacing the 1967 Stock in July 2011 with the Line running under ATO since Day One.
All Victoria Line Trains are maintained at Northumberland Park Depot which is located next to Northumberland Park station and is the only section of the Victoria Line thats above ground however trains can only access it to and from Seven Sisters.
Whilst variety and surrounding area has changed immensely in recent years despite a pandemic in 2020 but passenger numbers have bounced back gradually and it shouldn't come no surprise that Tottenham Hale is always busy.
