@@KentHewittpiano88 You're welcome. I was hoping that with your experience and knowledge you may be able to offer me some advice. I have been playing piano for around 6 months now on a very cheap and old keyboard that does not have weighted or full sized keys (a big no no for me) and am looking to upgrade. Do you have any recommendations for a good, relatively portable (as in, I can move it around without help) keyboard with admirable specs that is no more than $600? Or, if you don't, do you know which brands I should look for?
@KentHewittpiano88

I use a Roland RD300. It's only 30 something lbs. Most of my gigs I play an old Kurzweil PC88 but it weighs 50 Lbs. You can't get the Roland for as cheap as $600 unless you get a used one, however there may be other ones you'd like. Here's a demo of the Roland: kzbin.info/www/bejne/npvRfpiLlNx3mrM It's a video of mine using that keyboard, I bought from Kraft Music. You can go to Kraft Music website and hear samples of many el. Keyboards, some in your price range. www.kraftmusic.com/?gclid=CjwKCAiA66_xBRBhEiwAhrMuLf6cet8YaYC-TrLh5unzPUDywxeOf0TWtwyr3FSLk-GCmcS1XiaNVxoCctsQAvD_BwE

Hey Kent- love your videos. Great to see your take on Body and Soul, I just learned of it from seeing Aimee Nolte’s video on standards that modulate into their bridge and resolve back to the home key for the A-section return. She used this song to demonstrate a modulation up a half step (Db to D) and then the clever chromatic return to Db. Fascinating stuff!

Another fine lesson, thank you! Apart from accompanying congregational or solo singing in church, I only ever play piano solo, so of course that is the style of jazz I’m most eager to learn. I did appreciate the contrast you presented with both the band-in-a-box version and the solo version. Actually, I did play for a contemporary pop/fusion band in college 35+ years ago, so I have experience playing with drums, guitar, bass, vocals. I recommend it to everyone. There are skills to be learned there that cannot be found elsewhere. Your comments regarding the left hand style of playing arpeggios was interesting as I personally don’t find that difficult. It comes natural to me, and it’s prominent in the style of hymn accompaniment playing I’ve developed over the past 3 decades. What I find difficult is finding the spread voicing (and other unique jazz chordal styles) on the fly while playing, without working them out ahead of time. In addition to learning that skill, my goals are to expand my skills in jazz theory to expand my toolset to draw upon when improvising my own solos or whatever the needs might be. Specifically, jazz harmonies, chord progressions, anything to add color and emotion to my music. Your videos continue to be an inspiration and I look forward to each one!

Body and Soul! One of my favourite tunes to play on the piano! I'm self-taught and I think it was my first time in D flat but I found it easier than I expected and I understood why piano players like Db because the keys fall easily under your fingers. Thanks Kent, my solo version will be enriched by your video! Joe

Thanks for this addition to your ever-growing catalogue of TOP-NOTCH tutorials. Around the 9:20 mark, you discuss the rootless voicing for Fmin7. This is an issue I have run up against often: the 9th of the iii chord is an "outside" note, i.e. not in the scale of the tonic. I always stumble around looking for a "rich" voicing, but eventually settle on a straight m7 chord (in any inversion). It sometimes sounds a bit thin, especially if it is preceded by chords with lots of extensions, but it's the best option I can come up with.
@KentHewittpiano88
@KentHewittpiano88 5 жыл бұрын
Hi David, Right, the 1st inversion of the iii chord has the b5 or #11 of the scale, so if you don't like that "rub" you have to alter that top note down a whole step. But you still could add a 9th to the chord. I wouldn't worry about it, the next chord comes in soon enough.

Hi, you need to select the option for Real Players and then select the musicians you want. Since I only use bass and drums I picked Neil Swanson and Terry Clarke. Actually I played w/ Terry years ago, These tracks are real recordings of the musicians. Then all you do is pick a style like brushes ,sticks, 2 beat, walking bass, and then the hard part is creating an arrangement.

I had the pleasure of hearing him and his band at Paul's Mall in Boston when I was at BU. Extraordinary experience..there's was no one like him and his band...someday I'll tell you about it.

@@KentHewittpiano88 Sun or Coleman? I saw Sun several times and met him. I talked with him for about a half an hour, after which I, too, was convinced that he was from Saturn! I've seen the band twice in the last year here in NYC. Most recently (July) was outdoors, and they played to the "Space is the Place" movie. That's here on uTube, too. Great to hear what your experience was!
