Kind of surprised that this grip is something new to you but yeah it's a good grip for control especially. Definitely worth highlighting Either way people rarely dedicate any allotted time to discuss a bit of grip fighting so this is nice to see.

He didn't say that it was new to him, he's highlighting why this simple technique gets overlooked and why it's vital.

@@oddmanout7755 Sure but the way he has been taught to do it in Japan is what I am speaking to, As those little differences is the magic that makes it effective in it's intended application. So it is like learning it for the first time as if was a completely new and different grip. Because the technique to perform the grip was new to him, For real does that help?

great video! Yea it's a great grip. It allows you to use your elbow as well to frame and you can pull or push with it in a variety of ways, like Wolf with his uchimata, or inoue with his ouchi/osoto.

Also you'll see many Japanese taking a slightly lower position of Tsurite on the lapel and then lifting it so the heel of their hand (by the pinky) is placed into the natural pocket above the collarbone. This differs from a high post grip in that it allows you to play offense and defense (like the armpit grip does when you've been beaten by your opponent's Tsurite grip). The high post has its place, but limits your options. I was taught to grip like you demonstrate here when I was young. I think Shitaro Higashi has a good video - it may be the "how to grip the lapel - you're doing it wrong" video? Great to see your journey and always appreciate your commentary.

Wow, I didn't know it is something special. I learned it 36 years ago as a child and never think about it as something special. It always feels like a pretty natural way how to control an opponent.

This is exactly how I use the lapel. A lot of the people I spar with absolutely hate me for it and complain about how “stiff” I am, when actually I’m just framing against their attacks.

Excellent points, Chadi. Kumi Kata becomes more and more important as the Judoka advances in skill. You can often feel it when the opponent has a dominant grip on your judogi, but not always when they have a better grip, as you describe here. So it isn't always about strength, in Judo. I've seen heavier Judoka go over just as often as the lighter ones.

Hi Chadi, an important (for me at least) question I'd like to ask, if possible. It's quite some time I follow your channel since it has lots of insights and hystorical Judo facts. Two months ago I asked to Karate Dojo Waku the meaning of "JuDo" because in the following video he briefly named it and called it "lock way". I've asked for further explanation but without any result. This is the video in wich he refers to "JUDO" as the "lock way". In Italy the meaning is often referred to "via della cedevolezza" (via = way, cedevolezza = yielding, compliance) but to me Judo is all but to be "yielding". I'd like to hear your opinion. Thankyou very much, keep up the good work! Here's the video by Karate Dojo Waku. The "important part" starts at 6:32. Hope you can help. Tnx! kzbin.info/www/bejne/qpu9pYqhnbCNnpY&lc=Ugz6GhF1FhcYmSgccWx4AaABAg

Judo means "gentle/ yielding way" The reason is because of the philosophy behind it as well as the mechanics. At least in my opinion

@@Rikisballs Hi, thanks for your answer. Appreciated. But I was asking about that specific meaning that Karate Dojo Waku gave to Ju Do. I was interested in an opinion from Chadi but it seems my request will not be heard.

I fully agree with standing more upright, as I use this while standing in jiujitsu. I actually made a video about the concept of "elbows in" just recently. I think a lot of the "invisible" elements of the grip can be simplified by focusing on reducing leverage by keeping the elbow down and in, while tensioning into the wrist and hand frame. I'd love to hear opinions and discuss further. For those interested in the "Elbows In" video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/gYPUoYuVhrJkbc0 - thanks for the great videos, Chadi!

So by twisting your hand and getting rid of the slack near the shoulder you are applying pressure to the armpit even though you are holding the lapel. Right?
