Steve Perry is technically pretty much PERFECT in what he does imo, which is extremely remarkable.. (I mean Sam Johnson reviewed one of his most iconic performances and said he strained a little on the high notes, but I personally don't agree with that... Sam is just overly critical sometimes and searching for mistakes imo). So in my personal opinion Steve Perry has an AMAZING TECHNIQUE!!!! Why I agree with Caleb's ranking though: Steve is absolutely outstandinly great in something that is vocally not really challenging/difficult. Imo every trained singer of his voice type (a tenor leggero) can easily sing his songs. Steve is absolutely amazing, but didn't have any outstanding skill, contrarily to all of those ranked above him. He didn't have oustandind agility, dynamics, range, versatility, breath control etc.. and you won't find any "vocal acrobatics" from him.. So, he's absolutely great in what he does, but if you are his voice type.. it's not difficult to sing his songs... he stands out with a really great technique and his high vocals (which are a result of his natural voice type) but not with respect to skill
@kolnidur_4 жыл бұрын
@@belindamelissa8801 Well, he has an amazing range (F#2-C6), he was able to hit a C6 in mix voice (which is insane), and mastered the D4-D5 area (and here he's way better than Brendon Urie, Elvis Presley, Mitch Grassi, Freddie Mercury, Michael Jackson and Jeff Buckley). And no, many of his songs are set pretty high (above secondo passaggio for most singers and many tenors); yes, you need range to sing them but without a really good technique you're gonna fail miserably. Brendon Urie, just to name a S vocalist, is a tenor with a huge range, but you can hear how he struggles to sing songs that Steve sang in his sleep (like Faithfully and Open Arms). And trust me, I'm gonna do a video about his vocals and I've watched tons of Journey performances: Steve's pitch is almost perfect. Regarding agility and dynamics: Try this: kzbin.info/www/bejne/b3rWcpeFjal6d7c Or this: kzbin.info/www/bejne/Z4SnhXxrnLuKapY Or this: kzbin.info/www/bejne/fYHKp3Sme9SFf5Y Or this: kzbin.info/www/bejne/mJWvdamXrdWfm68 Steve Perry was a top notch vocalist, the only singers here that can compete with him, technique wise, are David Phelps, Stevie Wonder and Adam Lambert.

Hi, Caleb. Thanks for this part too. Don't mind the rude or even aggressive people in the comments. I've seen some nasty stuff about you, and Dimash, and Mitch, and a few others. This got me thinking about a poet from my country, who lived in the 19th century. Few people and literary critics acknowledged his genius back then, not many understood him. Unfortunately he died in his 30s, some of his work was found and published afterwards, and he didn't get the appreciation he deserved, but now he's our national poet. He was ahead of his time. Dimash is similar, he's far beyond anything we're used to (as a singer, because as a songwriter and influencer he's not there yet), and it will take some time to be acknowledged globally as he should, I just hope it won't take long enough so as to be too late for him to witness it. (The current fans make up for it anyways, we're appreciate him so much 😅) Or maybe he'll never get there. I'm thinking about classical music and its complexity, how little popular and understood it is, and Dimash is somewhere between this world and the mainstream one. And there's the industry support and promotion that he's lacking. I just hope the world won't be deaf and blind to such music. And I'm glad to be one of the people who get him and resonate with him. I wish more people realised the world is much more than the Western culture (the West of the West) and the English language.

@James Lannon Leave out "singer". He's among the greatest, but not the greatest. If by "greatest" you mean influence and popularity, then yes, that's discussable (we need to take into account the whole world, not only the English-speaking one), but not vocally. Dimash is 26yo Kazakh man, whose career started in 2017 at a Chinese show for professional singers. Ever since, he's been touring part of Asia and Europe (less this year), and he had a concert in NY as well last year. He doesn't have much professional promotion and he doesn't sing mainstream music, so he's not the type of artist you'd hear on every radio, not with the current mainstream standards anyways. He's been classically trained but he didn't choose an opera career, so he combines classical singing with contemporary, lots of genres and techniques, he specialises in crossover. With a range of over 6 octaves and the mastery of all his registers and very different techniques, he's probably the most accomplished vocalist (from the ones that are known, at least). I don't know if he'll ever equal the others in popularity and influence, but he's revolutionising singing, he's challenging physical limits. That's why Caleb said in part 2 that he put him there a bit prematurely. Even if he's quite popular in parts of Asia, and his Western fans are from lots of countries, he's not as popular as the others at the moment.
@estera41764 жыл бұрын
@James Lannon @James Lannon I know Elvis didn't have formal training. And it's fine, Dimash doesn't have to be your cup of tea. My point was and is, Dimash is superior as a singer. I was giving this example the other day: the British Industrial Revolution changed the history of humanity forever, but it doesn't mean that technology was better than the one today. Dimash surpasses Elvis (not in terms of influence), and in the centuries to come, maybe someone will build on what Dimash does now. Music evolves. It's normal to be subjective with music, it's art after all, and there are lots of personal and cultural factors involved in our preferences, but I see that many people can't get over what they're used to and can't accept that other legends are born as well. You said it's a fact, which is not the case. If you want to compare by facts, make a comparison and see who checks more boxes on the singing list. And that would require some research, because you can't understand Dimash as a singer only from one or two songs. But anyways, I'm not trying to convince you to like Dimash. It's art, and we resonate with whom we resonate after all. No one will take Elvis's place in the history of music, but the music doesn't stop with him, it evolves, it changes. It's only normal that the older humanity gets, the better will be at things. And again, this list is quite limited to Western music. I must say that I'm not very familiar with the Eastern one either, but I've discovered some great singers over the last few years, and who knows how many legends they have themselves there, and perhaps within totally different genres? But the English-speaking world has been economically dominant and is very good at promotion, so here we are, most of us establishing music history while disregarding the other side of the planet. Also, I didn't get the last part about Roy Orbison. In case you asked why isn't he in the list, I can't answer that, I don't know, it's not my list.

I found your compilation quite interesting, making sense and l mostly agree with your evaluations and 'placings'. @Chabtung4 жыл бұрын
Actually, he couldn't really sing opera. He had the potential but never developed the technique. To sing opera you have to have appropriate training, there is no way around it. Also, he wasn't always that great live. But i agree, he should be in front of MJ as a vocalist.

Well done for succeeding on this very hard and ambitious task!🙌🏽🌟🙌🏽 ...yet, Stromae should be added to the top of your S-tier list; more so, Greg Lake and Hua Chenyu should be added to the 'Vocal & Historical Legends'; No Rock, Popular voices have ever been as impressive and heartening than that of those two and None has ever had such exploding & extreme stage presence and gestures as Hua Chenyu does still perform and keep evolving.👍🏽👍🏽

Elvis had it so good, when he had it. When the drugs and weight took over...ouch. I'm still looking for some country vocalists. Vince Gill, Ricky Skaggs, Marty Robbins, Willie Nelson, Chris Stapleton. Okay, there are just too many to cover and rate. I believe a lot has to do with generations as well. I saw a thin Elvis and there was nobody top him. It was just short lived sadly.
@williamquinlan21934 жыл бұрын
As far as a vocalist is concerned Elvis was top tier from the 50s to 70s. The weight issues were only the last couple of years. His performance of Suspicious Minds in 70s Vegas bears this out. And in those last two years he still had it vocally.

Robert Plant lost his voice due to being forced to tour while he was sick with the Flu. Yes, he also smoked and that didn't help, but we're talking months around the world, a good portion of which he was ill on stage and ultimately damaged his voice. He had to get surgery on his vocal chords and it was never the same again.

Pavarotti undoubtedly had a great voice, and he achieved a rare level of popularity. Does fame equal greatness? There are greater singers in the world of opera and classical music, I believe, whose names would probably not be familiar to a lot of people. In terms of vocal technique, and utter mastery of the skill of singing, however, they are probably superior to most of the singers on this list, even if they are not performing contemporary music, in a contemporary style. That's a limitation of this kind of exercise I guess. Likewise there are singers of world music, and other cultures and traditions, who will be overlooked, which is a pity. Legacy is something that can only be judged with the benefit of time. That said, within the scope of this survey, where is Stevie Wonder? And to what extent is it reasonable to separate a man's voice from his musicianship and his songs? It's hard not to see Lennon & McCartney at the top of the list. I love Dimash's voice, and there is no doubt his technique is wonderful. But what is saying to us? He puts out songs, but he's not made an album that stands as a coherent musical or personal statement. Beloved as he is, and an Asian cultural hero, I'm not sure he has told us that yet. There is great emotion, sensitivity and benevolence, I believe, but he's also very guarded and polite, for want of a better word. He's a good performer, but I don't have a strong sense of his artistic personality. However, he's only 27, so I hope we will find out.
