The way that Dempsey kicked that 63 yarder is the really amazing part of it. Compare it to the way Justin Tucker had to use a different starting formation to break the record.

WRONG! The Rule specifically states that if the receiving team last touches the ball before it goes out of bounds, the ball is spotted at the inbounds spot. THAT IS WHAT THE RULE SAYS.

@@DarrylAJones by being out of bounds when the ball is *first* touched after the kick, it immediately places the ball out of bounds and therefore a foul. Technically the receiving team does not have possession yet. "The kicking team may not kick the ball out of bounds or be the last to touch the ball before it goes out of bounds between the goal lines. If the receiving team is the last to touch the ball before it goes out of bounds, the receiving team puts the ball in play at the inbounds spot."

Dempsey was unbelievable. He was a pudgy guy that did not look like an athlete. He only had one hand and half a foot. I saw him waddle down the field tackle a guy and knock him out of the game. He kicked his record field goal in the thick air of Louisiana. I believe the kicker that beat him did it in the thin air of Denver..

The Packers out of bounds play IS NOT called according to the Rule! The Rule states that the kicking team cannot kick the ball out of bounds. Then goes on to state that if the receiving team is last to touch the ball before going out of bounds, it is spotted where it went out of bounds. There is NO RULE VIOLATION on this play. When the receiving team is responsible for putting the ball out of bounds, they get the ball at that spot. THAT is what THE RULE is telling you! Don’t listen to Dan Dierdorf when he says,”That’s the rule!” He is wrong! The rule does not allow for the receiving team to place the ball out of bounds! Dierdorf’ comments were in the OTHER play that the Packers got away with this misinterpretation.

If the receiving team’s player has his feet out of bounds when he fields the kick, the kick is considered to be out of bounds. Nice try, jonesey. Read the rule book before you post something stupid.

If the returner is out of bounds when he fields the kick, it is a kick out of bounds. A kickoff out of bounds is illegal procedure and places the ball at the receiving team's 40 yard line. Don't go rules lawyer when you don't actually know the rules. Rule 6 Section 2 Article 3: "Penalty: For a kickoff out of bounds: The receiving team may elect to take possession of the ball 25 yards from the spot of the kick at the inbounds line on the side of the field where the ball went out of bounds, or at the out-of-bounds spot." Rule 3 Section Section 31 Article 3: "Item 2. Loose Ball. A loose ball that is not in player control is out of bounds when it touches a boundary line or anything that is on or outside such line, including a player, an official, or a pylon."
