Just watched it again and what matters is where the ball is when it left his hand and where the ball is when caught. The ball is at least 2 feet past the line and caught inches from the line making it a lateral. Go to Titan tube Ep.5 (yes I know they're biassed but the footage doesn't lie) clear cut.

I too have seen the version where it shows the sideline cam and it's almost an optical illusion. But the ball is thrown in such a weird sidearm way and caught behind the player that it just looks like a forward pass.

That play should never have counted because there was a pick... #17 on Michigan interfered with #24 on Illinois was trying to cover #88 on Michigan who caught the TD pass... The only ones tricked on the play was the refs!
