Classic. Fair bit younger than you guys, this era of metalcore really shaped my taste in my early teens - I was 9 when this album came out lol, think I started listening to them closer to the release of Overcome in 2008. Judson might enjoy Chiron off that album. I look back at albums from this era from bands like Killswitch, As I Lay Dying, Trivium, A7X, Bullet For My Valentine, August Burns Red, etc fondly, but after a certain point the scene did start to feel a bit formulaic and “soft” for lack of a better term, especially as I got exposed to stuff like Periphery’s debut album, All Shall Perish, and Black Dahlia’s Nocturnal/Deflorate, which had a lot more going on and broadened my horizons quite a bit. I kept listening to metalcore for a long while though as it was generally easier for me to wrap my head and hands around as a guitarist, haha.

Philip joined us in the crowd at the Exit /In in Nashville as Chimaira played their set. Back during this album's tour. We got some really funny pics. Years later, saw them at Rockettown with KSE and walking out to the lobby, he was behind one of the doors, holding it for the crowd and nobody but me and my buddy noticed him(short guy was good at blending in lol) We reminisced and he remembered us at the Exit/In show. Good times 🤘

FACTS about Spotify's playlists. Nik Nocturnal goes over them a lot and I'm always scratching my head at who they have on there. I've just been sticking to keeping an eye on Angry Metal Guy's reviews for new releases. The randomized stuff that plays after an album playlist is concluded is equally terrible - I ALWAYS get a combination of 1-2 minute intro or interlude songs, instrumentals, 1 in 5 or so actual songs, and the same ~10 or so bands. I've found exactly one new band I like through that method.
@sostenos
@sostenos Ай бұрын
the key is to do this method starting with lesser known bands; the bigger the band the bigger the recommendations following on from them will be. If you listen to random after metallica, you'll get bands like Megadeth and Sepultura. Listen to random after something like Gama Bomb and you're more likely to get more niche recommendations

This era was rough all around I think. I kinda, sorta dug on these guys, Trivium and a couple others. I tinkered around with melodic death and trash out of Sweden, Norway and such. But then I clicked hard with Devin Townsend's stuff, Strapping Young Lad and the Devin Townsend band. At the same time I started exploring post metal and got super hooked on The Gathering, Isis and folks like that. Then I started exploring Mike Patton's stuff beyond Faith No More and that just sent me off on a WILD avantgarde tangent that I'm still way deep into.

MCR's 'Three Cheers for Sweet Revenge', Blink-182 self titled album, Panic at the Disco's 'A Fever You Cant Sweat Out', Linkin Park's 'Meteora' & 'Hybrid Theory', and Senses Fail's 'Let It Enfold You' all came out in that time. On the subject of band "selling out/getting popular" i'd say there's is 2 point of view that I hear alot. One say's: "it's not he same anymore". The other's: "This band doesn't deserve it all theyre song are the same". But then there"s the band trying to make good music. I won't say there's not any band that never maid concession, but a band playing something they don't enjouy won't last long.

Freaking wonderful intro. This was a great chat guys, I really enjoyed it! It makes so much sense that many grunge lovers would turn their nose up to the emerging Linkin Park type music in the 00s. They both, I think, appeal to somewhat the same emotional pits, but the latter is a lot less poetic in its lyrical construction and more accessible musically. Transitioning from the introverted grunge to a more extroverted 00s Linkin Park type music must’ve been weird - or impossible. That’s how I see it all anyways. The music we initially discover on our own as young kids has a funny way of sticking around in our minds, and as Richard says, we may be a little insecure about it. I just know that I can’t be held accountable for the alternative rock kid me chose to have on my iPod in the mid/late 00s. Thankful we don’t stop developing at 11.

Musically I believe the album "This Darkened Heart" is more interesting for a guy like him. For example the solo and harmonies in "I Die In Digress", or the dissonant progression of the same titles song "The Darkened Heart". This Calling is pretty simple and not really musically interesting. Hope you get to more of the stuff from that era, like "THE HAUNTED" (for example "Demon Eyes" instrumental, or Deadhead.) But also the whole Gotheburg scene should be interesting (you could explain how Gotheburg became the cradle of that kind of music).

I always considered NWOAHM being a reaction to Nu Metal, reclaiming the fast riffing and volcanic guitar solos of 80s/90s metal, but adding guttural vocals and blast beats. I'm not them so I'll never know, but that's how it always felt to me. Sure it's a bit formulaic, but there are only so many ways you can grow a tree and have it not end up looking like a tree

About the whole sellout debate: I think it's just people, fans, wanting to feel superior to non-fans. "I know this band! They're great! You don't know them? Well sucks to be you!" - and when a band "sells out", your superiority goes away and THAT is what people don't like. If after "selling out" a band's music style doesn't change and yet some fans turn away, these fans didn't like the band in the first place but they liked knowing a band that other people didn't.
@MANGRINDER_band_
@MANGRINDER_band_ Ай бұрын
Nah it's not that, or may be partly that but not entirely. The thing is when bands "sell out" they usually lose the uniqueness and originality that made them great in the first place to appeal to a greater audience, so fans are obviously disappointed that they lost their edge.

Another angle to look at: Metallica for example played a certain type of music that people related to. They definitely changed which should be full okay in the artistic freedom sense. But the people that related to that music now don’t relate to it and tend to say they sold out but it’s really just they don’t like it. My specific opinion usually falls closer to the more people like something the more I don’t. Not because I’m trying to be edgy but writing in traditional formulas tends to make music stale to me. I can still see the artistic skill and ability to reach people but it becomes to formulaic to me. Sorry rant over.

This conversation is full of contradictions. He just talked for 30 minutes but said absolutely nothing. This song was written almost 25 years ago. What fucking formula are they following? Just curious. It's called a GENRE. Every GENRE has properties that make it distinct. ATR is a metalcore. Obviously if you are listening to metalcore, it's going to fucking sound like metalcore. This song is literally one of the songs that created the metalcore genre. To say this song is part of a formula is strange and it's insulting to the intelligence of the people that like it. Are we too stupid to listen to ''real'' music? Are we too simple to see this ''formula''? Are we being tricked by labels making fake music by using a formula?
