Rich D...PS...really, I have seldom or never...have I seen a more emotional performance in my life, (sixty-five years) of listening and enjoying music. To capture a tear from a performer (5:10) is incredible in its own right, but to not feel her emotional tie to this rendition is beyond my understanding of music appreciation. I wait with the Dear Lords own choir to here and see YOUR performance...please let me know when that day is, for I truly will be in attendance, front row. Sincerely yours Dennis Lundberg

The cowboy definition of "grace" is when we get what we don't deserve, and "mercy" is when we don't get what we do. I have the lyrics of this hymn taped to the side of my computer monitor to remind me that I am receiving what I have not, and cannot as a sinner, "earn." Though I may struggle to be a better person and better Christian, only by the blood of the lamb am I saved. Indeed, how great a debtor...

Safe Nabors and Sarah, I am sitting here, crying while listening to this. It is my favorite hymn with the most beautiful lyrics and melody of any -- though, I can never quite understand what an "ebenezer" is no matter how often I read a definition. This video came up when I opened KZbin and I have listened four times now. It came right at the moment I needed to release an enormous amount of self emotion and absorbed emotion. I have a chronic disease, my mother just died, I closed my law practice and I do pro bono legal work for Veterans who are suffering physically and emotionally. I have no idea why I am writing this on social media. The appearance of this hymn when I opened the program is how the Lord works in my life. He is never far.

Rebecca, An Ebenezer is a "stone of help" that Samuel erected to remind the Israelites how God rescued them on that spot. You can find more of the story in I Samuel. I'm so sorry to hear of your life struggles, but I'm glad you are aware that God is with you.

I regret I must disagree with scmager's opinion below. To my mind, music speaks to the emotions and being "overwrought" is not a sin. Music is supposed to move one. Was the original hymn tune simple? Fair enough. But is it wrong to enoble it as this performance does? I found it stunning when I first encountered it on KZbin 3-4 years ago, and I find it stunning still. I will grant that it is perhaps a bit much when close-ups are shown of the young girl chorister weeping towards the climatic portions of the piece, but even those tears I believe were genuine, and is it wrong to show people moved by the best spirits of their hearts? I deeply admire this performance. And, by the way, I am a secular humanist, not religious at all.

The only singing I've done has been as part of the congregation in an Episcopal church. I've choked up and have been unable to continue because of the message conveyed in the words of this hymn. I fully understand the emotional response of that young woman. Thanks for your comments, Marc.

I love you LDS people, I am not one myself and have no wish to be so BUT don't cry so much listening to this. I mean you probably sung this a 100 times in your churches - what makes it special and emotional is the Mack Wilberg arrangement. It is nothing less than brilliant and OK OK! I admit it..... I occasionally shed a tear at this wonderful performance too.
@davidyoung85764 жыл бұрын
This is one of my favorite performances of hymn. Mack Wilberg's arrangement is unbelievably good with the harmonies of the singers and strings interacting beautifully! No wonder so many of the singers were moved to tears. I just wish the recording engineer had balanced the trumpets better near the end. It sounds like one of them is blaring directly into the mike and is distractingly overpowering. I was once a recording engineer so hopefully, it's only apparent to me.

It was written in 1758 by Robert Robinson, and set to John Wyeth's tune "Nettleton" written in 1813. I believe it appeals to all of humanity who "wander from the fold of God" and are grateful that we have been rescued by the Savior, regardless of our religious affiliation. I am so grateful for the gifted Bro. Wilberg's brilliant arrangement of this song that has such power to touch our hearts.

I primarily listen to heavy metal and all that is blasphemous, but this is among the most powerful live performances I have ever heard. MOTAB's vocal performances are usually outstanding, but the live orchestra really seals it here. The emotional crescendo is solidified by the vocalists truly believing what they are singing. Beliefs don't matter as long as you are true to yourself. I feel that very strongly here.

I was at the taping of the DVD/Program, and it was a beautiful and spiritually uplifting program. I had recently buried my nine month old daughter and was struggling. The words of this song and Redeemer of Israel reminded me that Jesus loves me - and no matter how difficult life is, Christ is there to carry my burdens. 'Jesus sought me when a strange...he to rescue me from danger' is the message of the atonement. Years later I still say "here's my heart..seal it for thy courts above"

The teardrop shed at 4:14 testifies, more than any word could do, that the young woman singing knows who her Savior is. There is nothing any "anti" can say that would ever negate this for me. That teardrop will do more good for The Kingdom, than any of their rantings will ever be able to harm. It will work latter-day miracles in the hearts of the truly faithful.

@AmandaCaines Dear Amanda. The Gospel, as I understand it, includes the means by which all of Heavenly Father's beloved children (that's you, me, and everyone else) may return to his Celestial Kingdom. There is no need for the "side door" as you put it. All of us may walk in, humbly knowing we are loved and welcome. I believe the young woman knows how much Christ loves us all. God bless you in your many many endeavors.

yamaho5, I agree. I don't think this matters one way or the other. Anyway, it's not a "Mormon hymn," having been written in 1758 by Robert Robinson before preaching a sermon at Calvinist Methodist Chapel in Norfolk, England. That it inspires Mormons and other Christians is enough. Leave doctrinal discussions for other forums.

@fonongaloa The hymn--as a poem--was written in 1758 by Robert Robinson before preaching a sermon at Calvinist Methodist Chapel in Norfolk, England, and later set to music. There's a lot of info out there on both the author, who as one might suspect was a repentent sinner, and the hymn. Knowing what an "ebenezer" is makes a lot more sense out of the song. One of the best explanation I have found is at revneal.org. Search on "ebenezer" and read "what's an ebenezer".

I often find the story behind a hymn as important in many ways as the hymn itself. Many hymns were written by those who wrote many hymns--the Wesley brothers come to minde--and though the devine inspiration can't be discounted, there are some like The Battle Hymn of the Republic or Eternal Father Strong to Save has specific inspiration. This is one such hymn. I found the story here: Google on "Come Thou Font of Every Blessing, the Song and the Story." The hymn means even more to me now.
@isartam14 жыл бұрын
@scubawrestler True, but there's much more to both the origin of the word and to the hymn itself. Also, if you know the Biblical origin, you can see why Dickins would choose it for his main character in his "A Christmas Carol."
