when answering question 1, why cant you use proc print data=shoerange; where salesrange='Lower'; run; ? I try to subset the "lower" part in my proc print instead of the proc freq but i am getting 394 observations

we can use that but in that case we have to count the number of observation in the output window because you didn't get the obs count from one so he used the proc freq its really smart and simple.
