A suggested upgrade: after dispensing each ingredient, run the pump in reverse for a few seconds, to empty the portion remaining in the tube.

Another idea; to save some cost in favor of preparation speed might be using just one pump and distribute the ingredients through the tubes with valves.

Cool project. Just a tip, pre drill your holes in the timber, you have a pillar drill. Perfect nails, no splits and you control where the nail goes. Same as electronics, provide a path of least resistance and the nail will follow Good Job on the electronics 🙏

This is an interesting project and I liked your design, thank you for these amazing videos. One idea to add variety to your drinks is to use solenoid valves to control from where the pumps are sucking, this way you wouldn't need as many pumps and the valves are definitely cheaper. Edit: Thinking again, maybe using the valves wouldn't be such a good idea for food safety.

Suggestion: When you drill into wood, Drill from the hidden side and also have another wood piece under the piece you are drilling. That way when material is pulled up the hidden side will have ugly sides(Because of wood pulled up) and the good side will have a nice hole because the wood piece it is against will prevent sides from separating on the sides. If you need both sides pretty, then sandwich the piece you are drilling between two other wood pieces and then drill.

Hey GreatScott! I have a project idea for you: Modify a PSU to be constant current source. I think if you remove the feedback from the output and add a small resistor(current shunt?) to the low side, it could provide a feedback. This should be amplified to the appropriate level and voila CC PSU. I didn't think this through, but I think this could be done, with your knowledge. Would be useful to drive leds, even many in series, since the voltage could go above 12V. What do you think? Cheers

Just a quick tip regarding wood glue: it works best when gluing two surfaces together, but is terrible at filling gaps. So instead of gluing the wood together with superglue and then filling the gaps with wood glue, I would only use wood glue. A thin layer is enough to create a super strong bond, it just needs some compression during drying. Ordinary clamps are totally fine, but when working with a rectangular shape, strap clamps are really useful. Gaps, should they remain, can be filled using wood glue mixed with an equal amount of saw dust. PS: You said beech wood, but it seems to be birch wood, but not a big deal ;)

instead of using a timer you could have used the strain gauge measure the weight?
@meclucas
@meclucas 7 жыл бұрын
He could, but I don't think it would work as well as it does with the timer. The problem here is that the load cell produces a low signal that is susceptible to noise, in order to read a stable signal you must use some form of filtering, which will decrease the response time of the load cell, so he wouldn't be able to measure the amount of liquid poured in real time.
@greatscottlab

Yes, that would have also worked. But the problem was that due to the vibrations the measurements were a bit off.

I'm not sure what you're referring to, but you can't use the electrical current flowing through a liquid to measure the flow rate. To do that would require either a turbine in the pipe or something else that can be measured electronically which is not practical on this scale
@Rostol
@Rostol 7 жыл бұрын
Algorhythm no, you can do it. It is called magnetic flow meter. Or mag meter. It requires a conductive liquid. The problem here is that it requires a known conductivity on the liquids. Which would mean recalibration after each new liquid is used.

A few things I’d do is redesign the whole thing and design it like this: 1. Find or make some sealed dispenser bins (something like 3” wide, 9” deep and 10” tall or something the size of the dispenser area would be that’ll hold like a half to full bottle of Bacardi, etc) sloped to the center for the tube connection, that has a sealed, but removable lid for filling/cleaning. This would prevent fruit flies, etc and can be left filled. 2. Have 4 or 6 on each side of the dispenser part (in the middle) that way you can have one for jack, Bacardi, crown royal, bourbon, triple sec, etc. I’d put a thin black piece of material between each bin with a light smoke front panel in front of all of them and put a white led light above each one. When a drink is selected that uses Bacardi (for example) the light above the Bacardi would light up and you can see it through the front panel. So the ingredients being used lights up. 3. Have a flip up lid over the ingredients bins for filling etc. 4. Have more drink recipes, and include a multi line lcd panel for instructions. For example for a margarita, when selected it would say something like place a shaker filled with ice in the dispenser area, then after it dispenses it would tell you to shake and strain, or place in a blender and pulse, etc. 5. A sensor to detect a glass, etc is in the dispenser area to prevent dispensing without one. 6. Move the electronics into a false back that’s covered to keep them from getting wet, and replace it with a pull out drip tray under the dispenser for spills, over dispensing, etc. 7. Have a selection for size of glass, example for a Long Island iced tea, you can tell it that your using a 6 oz glass and it’ll adjust the portions for that size glass, or using a 12 oz glass, it’d adjust for that. 8. Keep the multi color led lights for the dispenser area. 9. Make a port where you can plug in a computer for servicing/updates via a usb cable, etc to make it easier for updates, etc if needed instead of pulling off the back, etc. 10. Glue the black plastic sheets you used on rather than screwing them on and maybe use a silver metal corner piece to put over the corners. 11. Put rubber feet on the bottom to protect the surface you put the automatic bartender on. 12. An option of selecting drink strength from no alcohol, little, moderate to strong... depending on the persons taste. Just a few things I thought of to take the concept to the next level. Oh and of course google Home/Alexa integration.

I've seen a pump like this in a bubble machine, and was surprised by the ingeniosity they used for a simple pump. It seems simple, but I would never have thought of that way.

how safe is it to move liquid from a pump like that, since you will drink it
@jeremyhall7259
@jeremyhall7259 7 жыл бұрын
Very as you see he replaced it with food safe silicone tube.
@MrDaniyalAh
@MrDaniyalAh 7 жыл бұрын
Kartikey Agarwal He used food safe silicone tubes plus no mechanical parts come in direct contact with the liquids, the pumps simply press and push the liquid forward in the tubes
@greatscottlab
@greatscottlab 7 жыл бұрын
Correct, like already stated very safe due to the food safe tube.
@agarceran
@agarceran 7 жыл бұрын
If the tube is food grade it should be completely safe, as the liquid doesn't get in contact with anything else.

Very. Peristaltic pumps are used in hospitals for this reason. No mechanical parts come into contact with what is being pumped.

My uncle also made one a while ago that works with Apple Homekit/Siri and another app for android. Has a compartment for 50 red cups, 10 bottles of liquor and 10 bottles for soda/juices. Might make one of those as well in the future.

As a tip for drilling: Laying a sacrificial piece of wood under the piece you are drilling in will prevent tear out when the drill pokes through. You may have to clamp both pieces together tough.

I have a plan to make these cocktail machines in this way but with a vinyl wrap inside and outside. The pump motor inside the case, The LCD Display, The rotary encorder, The Arduino Nano, The pump motor driver, The Scale, the DC jack all connections will be connected through a designed PCB and order it from JLCPCB and with a on/off switch. The Rest of the Pump pipes will be in a professional look. I hope you make like this cocktail machine in a future video

I'm so going to build this and connect this to home assistant to use our smarthome as a web interface. By doing it this way I can also automate the cocktails when I'm done working in friday and entering the door.

@BeetleJuice1980
@BeetleJuice1980 7 жыл бұрын
great idea! the scale measures mass not volume so liquids with different viscosities will give different volumes. you could have one pump and a distributor that changes the liquid being pumped (plus some valves and that way you could have maybe 10 liquids and only one pump , plus you could do a flush to the pipes after each liquid was pumped)

When you drill holes, remember to put a piece of scrap wood behind what ever you are drilling(this prevents the chipping). Also never use nails, they make things look cheap and never look nice, alternatively you could of done dowel joints, which is quite easy to do. I recommend that you get a laser cutter, as they are really useful for my electronics projects, and if you know how to make boxes via 2D CAD software, you can do the casing for that project in a matter of 45 minutes.

Cool setup! Nice for a first attempt! FYI, your load cell should have overload protection so it doesn't bend too far and cause problems.

I think instead of recording pumping periods and adjusting poured material's volume accordingly, knowing the densities of the liquids and adjusting the poured amount making use of the strain gauge sensor would be wiser. However, you have done a great job and congratulations for that. I hope you continue making such videos.

The good feature of a Peristaltic pump is that the motor don’t touch the liquid which is good because if you are going to digest the liquid you don’t get killed by toxics.

Instead of using load cell, you can try 3 flowmeters inline with each pump. That way the drink can be made faster as the 3 pumps will pump simultaneously.
