Living in Greece

Күн бұрын

March the 25th is Greek Independence Day in Greece, it is also Annunciation of the Blessed Virgin Mary Day. Tanya and I are invited into the village centre to celebrate. We had a nice coffee at Marias Taverna and then went to our good friend Taki's house for traditional food. It was amazing!
This KZbin video captures a glimpse of Greek village life on Independence Day and the Ascension of the Virgin Mary. We mention that Greek society is a close-knit community and typical of a Greek village. Andy shares his experiences of attending the event, where people gather to celebrate with music, dance, and food. He notes that dried salted cod with potatoes and skordalia, a garlic potato mashed potato dip, are traditional foods to eat on this day. The speaker also admits that his Greek pronunciation is not good, but he is continuously learning. He mentions that living in Greece offers a continuous learning process, and you learn something new every day. The video includes some beautiful shots of children dancing and the surrounding village, and ends with the speaker heading off to enjoy some traditional Greek food.
Tanya and I have bought a small old house in Greece and are living in Greece and renovating the house ourselves. These are our experiences of living here. See the chapters below for a list.

Pronunciation depends on writing. Cod in Greek is written ΜΠΑ ΚΑ ΛΙΑ ΡΟΣ. The first two letters ΜΠ make the sound "b" as in "big". We don't have a letter for the sound "b" so we use ΜΠ combined. In English you can write it bakaliaros. We never pronounce it vakaliaros.

Sir, with all due respect, and acknowledge that you choose my country for your living, let me corect you. 25th of March 1821, is not the anniversary of Independence of Greece. Greece became a State in 1832. Eleven years after the said year. What this date is named for us Greeks is "The beginning of the Greek Revolution for Independence" as it is officially named, or "Greek Revolution", for short. 😊 Independence got to their respective dates, USA, India, Ghana, or maybe Senegal, and Algeria. And we got acknowledged as an independent country, but after 11 years of bloody Revolution. 25th of March is the beginning of this struggle. The Greek Revolution. Thank you for having me in the comments section of your video.

@@LivinginGreece 25th March 1821: The Hellenic Declaration of a Revolutionary Armed Struggle, at the Monastery of Hagia Lavra, located at the village of Kalavryta, Ahaia region, of Northern Peloponnese, the National Oath for Freedom taken by the fighters, and the blessings of Holly Cross for the completion of the struggle. After 5 years of struggle a huge Turkish reinforcement came by sea from Egypt to Peloponnese, to seize any rebellion against Ottoman rule of Peloponnese. Imagine. How small Peloponnese is, in comparison with the Ottomans, stretching from North Africa to Ukraine, and from Austria to Iraq. Those rebellions had some guts didn't they ? Finally, after the naval confrontation at Navarone, and the victory of the allied flots of United Kingdom, France, and Russia, (1827), under the commandments of English Admiral Sir Edward Codrington, a small independent Greek State recognized by the treaty of London, only in the Peloponnese region, with first capital city been Nafplion. You can pay a visit to your ancestors memorial of this naval battle, contributing to Greece Liberation, here: g.co/kgs/DyPX9M The embedded inscription in Greek language reads: Greece's Eternal Gratitude for the English Sailors and Officers failed in Navarino on October 20th 1827. Continously wars against Ottoman Empire, the next 50 years liberated Greece to the north until Larissa in Thessaly Region. Hence the train station in Athens, is still named "Larissa Station", as at the north of Larissa was still the Ottoman Empire. During the early years of the 20th century (1912-1913), a new war against the Ottoman Empire, liberated Northern Greece, Giannena, Thessalonica, Kavala, and Alexandroupolis. We even disembark to the coasts of Anatolia, bringing Ionian Lands, back to the Home Land during 1920-1923 and even got 10 miles from Constantinople, but we lost that war. A new Turkish revolutionary movement under the leadership of Mustafa Kemal, over throne the Ottoman Sultan, took the power, rearrange their Army, declared the establishment of Turkish Democracy, attacked the Greek Army, campaigned in Anatolia and got the Victory. We can't observe 2 things. One. Turkey as a contemporary state is 100 years younger then Greece, been the same. Both of them been revolted against the Ottomans. And two. There was never a fixed date of the Greek Independence, as the country enlarged the borders slowly after many wars which lasted 100 years, till the present day. God knows what the future is hiding for the Greeks and the Turks. It's an ongoing process. This small land you've chosen as your new home, has some fascinating stories to tell. Huh ? 🙂 Please give my cordially greetings to your estimate spouse. Thanks for reading me. Theodore from Thessalonica.
