Fakes (pronounced 'Fa' as in 'Fab' and 'Kes' as in 'Kestrel') is a very popular, traditional Greek dish you can make at home. It's one of the most popular meals in Greece. If you want to give it that extra traditional Greek touch, make sure you serve it accompanied by crusty bread, olives, chunks of raw onions and anchovy fillets. And make sure that, once served on your plate, you add a drizzle of red wine vinegar. Vinegar is as important to Fakes as it is to fish & chips in the UK!!!
Fakes is one of those dishes that Greeks hate as children, when they are served at the family table (and they are served frequently). But once they become adults, for some strange reason, they crave a bowl of Greek lentil soup and they make sure they keep a pack of dried green lentils in their cupboard, ready to cook when those cravings appear!
Pulses and legumes always played a big part in Greek cuisine and green lentils have been at the top of that list in most households. And they are very healthy too: they are packed with B vitamins, magnesium, zinc and potassium. They are made up of over 25% protein, which makes them an excellent meat alternative for your protein intake. They are also a great source of iron.
There are also many variations of this recipe. For example, some regions don't use tomato puree, tomato paste or any tomatoes. But we personally prefer it with tomato paste as it gives the dish a more flavoursome result. Some people also like the soup cold! If you have any left, you can refrigerate and eat it the next day after leaving it out for a while to get to room temperature. Its flavour will be equally amazing! Alternatively, heat it up and it's ready to eat!
