Interesting lesson but a bit too fast. The female Lion you pronounced/e/ like in kai/ke/ but in the male donkey/ai/ like in the female donkey. Why?

Thank you!! I'm sorry that it was a bit too fast. In the word for the female lion, λέαινα, αι is pronounced just like ε. The female donkey, γαϊδούρα, has the diaeresis (the two dots), which tells us to pronounce α and ι separately. But, the male donkey is tricky! In the word for it, γάιδαρος, αι is pronounced like the αϊ in the female donkey, because the accent is on the α, which, in a way, separates the two vowels α and ι. When the accent is on the first of two vowels that are next to each other and can be joined together (for example, αι, οι, ει, αυ, ευ, etc.), the only way to pronounce them is separately. If we are to pronounce them together, then the accent must be on the second letter. There is another form of the word γάιδαρος. It's γαΐδαρος. In this case, the accent is on the ι, so, in order to pronounce the two vowels separately, we have to use the diaeresis again, just like in the female form. Is it a little clearer now? Thank you for your question!

@@GreekWithStalo Thank you for explanation. I had no idea that Zoo is a Greek word for an animal. Today I hope to finish my writing on computer the translation of Goliath and I start to learn Greek from animals backward. Thank you once again.
