nea (νεα) means "young" or "news" (i.e. εχεις νεα; 'do you have news?' or; ειναι νεος σκιλος 'it's a young dog") Greeks would say : εχω καινουρια γυαλγια /καινουριος σκιλος. Also the part about how Giannis loves Maria is wrong, I don't know if it can work with different words, but the last two examples make no sense at all, and I believe all three examples are actually wrong. (@9:00) you can not say "O Giannis ti Maria agapaei" (Ο Γιαννης τη Μαρια αγαπαει.) I can think of weird cases for the first one in the example : τη Μαρια αγαπαει Ο Γιαννης. This could work as an answer to the question : "who does Giannis love?" and "τη Μαρια" would be at the start just to put emphasis. the other two I can not think of a possible way to make them work tbh.

To answer your question, it is possible for a greek today to understand a lot of ancient Greek, only if he knows very (very very) well modern Greek to find the connections and locate the differences among the two eras. Unfortunatly this is not the rule nowadays, because most of the Greeks only learn and speak greek as native language and only few of them are studying (new) greek and mostly for professional reasons, for example, students, teachers, lawyers, priests (In Greece the Bible is written in anciend Greek) There is also some greek dialects they are relatively closer to anciend greek but even the people who are speaking theese dialects sometimes don't know to define the connections with ancient Greek. Things are way better when you set someone who knows anciend Greek, with someone who only speaks greek as native language and with "small" explainations, then is he more familiar with it and understands a lot more and easy. A small tip: if you pronounce "Κοινή" as "koine" nobody in Greece will understand you because "ο+ι" makes an "i" and this should be pronounced "kini". This hapends because in all over the world (but not in Greece) if someone want to learn and studies anciend Greek, is learning greek with "Erasmian" pronounce. This term comes from a Dutch scholar, who tought ancient Greek in universities in Germany and England, named Desiderius Erasmus Geert who lived (1466-1536) at the time when the Byzantine Empire was just fallen and was conquered from the Othomans. For his complicated reasons, he claimed that the right pronounce of the greek diphthongs ει,οι,αυ,ευ,ου,αι (greek word δίφθογγος) should be separate as two vowel. This is a reason also when tourists are coming in Greece and saying that they have learned anciend Greek at the school or university nobody can understand them what they are trying to say. Thank You for the nice video

Coen80, I would argue that "την Μαρία αγαπάει ο Γιάννης" and "ο Γιάννης την Μαρία αγαπάει" are used, but usually not standalone. In a phrase like "Αφού την Μαρία αγαπάει ο Γιάννης ρε Κώστα, όχι την Ελένη", or "Αφού ο Γιάννης την Μαρία αγαπάει ρε Κώστα..." to change the focus of the emphasis, but the 4th example is probably not used at all. About the news, we use both, depending on the occasion. For example, we can say "η καινούρια προσφορά", or "η νέα προφορά". Ο Σκύλος με υ...

@@skoy21 Grrrrr these ypsilons! ;) Five different ways to write 'i' is a confusing thing. Though I have most trouble with the ypsilon, because there doesn't seem to be a clear ruling on when it's used (unlike η or οι for example) Thanks for clarifying that grammar part and for producing some actual examples.

Apparently some Chinese scholars in the 90s created the idea that all Western civilizations were based on lies - Ancient Greek was just a bunch of conspiracies directed by Germans, Turkish, and specifically Jews. Later this theory developed further that all other civilizations except the Chinese were either made up or largely exaggerated. These people clearly believe that Confucius was already inventing telescope and devising models of modern technologies.

Clearly this theory has nothing to do with Hitler's race bullshit, it was just some idiotic Chinese scholars believing Chinese civilization was the most superior and therefore finding reasons to reject all others.

Stone Chen your Chinese scholars are right. Chinese Civilisation had all been above other nations till West Europeans started to colonize third world nations (I'm Turkish. Consider this comment as a confession of a young Turkish patriot whose nation always lost to you. Your Civilisation is the only one that I personally both hate and respect). You are just underestimating Asiatic nations due to Western Civilisations late barbaric achievements. By the way, we don't have any business with the Greek history, just been their bodyguards almost for four centuries.

Hello, my Magyar friend. Nice to see a foreigner having Greek as their favorite foreign language. Just a small correction. The verb "ελπίζω" is followed by "να", not "ότι". And there's an "αυτό" missing there. So, it's "ελπίζω να καtαλάβατε αυτό που έγραψα". Well done though. Also your diction is better than a lot native speakers' :P

I am from Ukraine but since my very childhood Greece is one of my favourite countries! Especially i like Ancient Greek mythology and history after that period (including the Revolution of 1821). Greek language sounds pretty nice for me. What i can note that the word "freedom" sounds the best in Greek: "Elefteria". Best wishes for Greek people and for Greece from Ukraine! There is a history of Greek people here as well.

I'm from Italy and I'm learning Greek at school. I deeply love the Greek culture and all Greek writings, like Plato's, Aristoteles', or Homer's ones or all other writers' too. Here, in Italy, we study Greek at High School (specifically at Liceo), but not the modern one, but the ancient one. I'd like to know if Greeks present here, who speak Greek, understand this writing. Buondì a tutti! Sono italiano e sto studiando la lingua greca a scuola. Amo profondamente la cultura greca così come tutti i testi che da essa provengono, come quelli di Platone, d'Aristotele, o dello stesso Omero, o di tutti gli altri scrittori. Qui in Italia studiamo greco al Liceo, ma non quello moderno, bensì quello antico. Vorrei sapere se i qui presenti greci, che parlino greco, capiscano questo scritto (in greco antico).

Perfect ancient Greek and it would be perhaps interesting to you that this particular text you wrote can be comprehensible even to someone who has knowledge only of Modern Greek. In particular, the only word you will absolutely not hear in Modern Greek is Πάνυ. Some grammatical forms like in Γνῶναι βουλοίμην εἰ and καταλαμβάνουσιν have been dropped or modified, but the word roots themselves are the same in modern Greek (γνώση, βούλομαι, καταλαβαίνω etc). Basically you are ready for Modern Greek at this point. You would pick it up in no time :)
@lucatrenti2978
@lucatrenti2978 Жыл бұрын
@@BlueLena Thank you. Being Italian, I thought that the differences between ancient and modern Greek were like the ones which are between Italian and Latin. Also in our language the roots are basically the same (obviously with many exceptions) like "italico, differenza, tra, antico, greco, essere, uno, latino, nostro, lingua, radice, fondamentale, uguale, ovvio, molto, eccezione" (which are the words I used till now in this comment) which derive from "italicus, differentia, intra, antiquus, graecus, esse, unus, latinus, noster, lingua, radex, fundamentalis, aequalis, obvius, multus, exceptio", but if I showed a latin text to Italian people (or I spoke in the latin language) they would understand very little. It occurs because of the grammar and the syntax, which are now very different than they were in Latin, and I thought it was the same way in Greek. So thank you for having explained me how it works in Greek, and I would be happy to pass from ancient to modern Greek as I finish studying it.

In 1957 a Greek politician delivered a speech in English, using only Greek words. I think some of you will find it interesting, so here it is: " Kyrie, I eulogize the archons of the Panethnic Numismatic Thesaurus and the Ecumenical Trapeza for the orthodoxy of their axioms, methods and policies, although there is an episode of cacophony of the Trapeza with Hellas. With enthusiasm we dialogue and synagonize at the synods of our didymous Organizations in which polymorphous economic ideas and dogmas are analyzed and synthesized. Our critical problems such as the numismatic plethora generate some agony and melancholy. This phenomenon is characteristic of our epoch. But, to my thesis, we have the dynamism to program therapeutic practices as a prophylaxis from chaos and catastrophe. In parallel, a panethnic unhypocritical economic synergy and harmonization in a democratic climate is basic. I apologize for my eccentric monologue. I emphasize my eucharistia to you Kyrie, to the eugenic and generous American Ethnos and to the organizers and protagonists of this Amphictyony and the gastronomic symposia.''

As a Greek-American who until the age of 13 didn't had any knowledge of the Greek language i have to say that when me and my family moved to Greece i had to take an intensive course in order to go to a Greek school. Even if i was considered as a talented boy in linguistic (cause i was learning the language very fast), i realized that when i finished the course and i was ready to participate in a class , the words and the meanings that i knew were only the 30% of what the native speakers express by saying them. Funny thing was that at the time i had a very strong accent which was showing clearly that i didn't grow up in Greece and my schoolmates were teasing me. After a couple of years when one of the lessons was the Archaic Greek i found it so boring and useless to learn. One year after i finished the high-school i was already in the University studying economics, a family friend gave me a speech about the beauty of the Greek language and i realized that i already new many words which were archaic. I found it so interesting and i decided to educate myself. During my journey to the archaic Greek i fell in love with linguistics. This helped me to be able at the age of 25 to be able to learn 3 more languages. After 12 years i moved to a German speaking country and this knowledge helped me to learn good German in 2 years without going to any school and with not so much contact with native speakers.I hope that my story can give a push to some people who really want to educate themselves , to try and learn the amazing language which is called Hellenic.

As a native Greek moved to an English speaking country I realized how the Greek language has influenced the world. Also I realized how easy it was for me to learn a third language knowing only Greek. I am coming from a Greek family from the south part of Greece. At my dads village they speak Dorian mix influence of ancient Greek, modern and Dorian. Very similar to Cyprus that I can understand super easy too. I traveled to South Italy when I was young and I could understand everything in Greci ( a Greek dialect mix with Italian words). Now I speak fluent Norwegian language ( I learned it in 2.5 years without too much effort) I understand also Swedish people too. I can read Dutch and get the meaning but I can't speak or understand them very easily. Now I am trying to learn Italian and I think I can master the language within 2 years too. The reason?? I have Greek roots and a language that made me understand the real meaning of a simple word. People these days speak a language like English but they don't really understand the real meaning of a word. In Greece every word makes sense because it has a root. As the video showed I was happy to watch it but at the same time I am sad that the Greek language is not a mandatory language in every country in the world. If people study Greek I am sure their mind will understand other things too.

No, it is not rare at all. That is a common one. Albanians like Greece and Greeks as individuals. Many of them have a great love for the Greek music and culture and nature. What Albanians usually don't like and most of them disgust is the Greek politics and few medieval atavisms still existing in Greek society. Anyway, the topic is about the Greek language and to me it is one of the most beautiful in the world and among easiest to learn.

Fascinating. Greek grammar is pretty similar to my native language German: lots of inflections enabling a very flexible word order. I wonder how today’s Germanic languages would look like without the influence of ancient Greek which was used/known by scolars and priests all across Europe (besides Latin, of course). Greece definitely was the birthplace of European civilization.

Genau. Schüler in Griechenland nehmen verpflichtend Altgriechisch Unterricht. Wenn ich erst Deutsch studieren anfing, merkte ich viele Ähnlichkeiten zum Altgriechischen. Die Deklination von Nomen/Adjektiven und besonders der Satzbau sind einige Beispiele. Das was Neugriechischem fehlt aber es gibt in Deutsch sowie in Altgriechisch ist das Gerundium. Diese Tatsache überrascht mich immer. Excuse any mistakes. Havent practiced in years.

Hello dear! You write wonderfully! It is interesting that the only mistake in your sentences, is one that SO MANY of my greek compatriots make and I wanted to comment, haha! So, the mistake is: Γεια σου αγαπημένε/-η! Γράφεις θαυμάσια (θαύμα=wonder😉)! Είναι ενδιαφέρον που το μόνο λάθος στις προτάσεις σου, είναι ένα, που κάνουν ακόμη και οι Έλληνες συμπατριώτες μου και ήθελα να σχολιάσω, χαχα! Λοιπόν, το λάθος είναι: πολλή αγάπη, not πολύ! this is the adjective: ο πολύς (much, for masculine) η πολλή (much, for feminine) το πολύ (much, for neuter) BUT the adverb is also πολύ (exactly like the neuter form) Keep in mind that love (αγάπη) is a feminine noun in greek, so the correct form is "πολλή αγάπη". But if you want to say, for example, "very instense love", then you don't need the adjective, but the adverb (πολύ), cause now it characterizes the adjective, not the noun. Therefore you'll say "πολύ (adverb) έντονη (=instense) αγάπη". Just to help a bit more.. Adjectives characterize nouns! Adverbs characterize adjectives or verbs! Πολλά φιλιά! (Lots of kisses!)

As a native speaker, I would say that by reading ancient greek being a modern Greek speaker you can get an idea but a little idea because syntax in ancient greek is much far complex than modern Greek. Moreover in school we are taught about syntax and word roots (that is helping to understand a Latin word for example or much more a scientific terminology because you already know the roots so you don't have to memorize all the terms) so we are not taught how to actually speak ancient greek.

Σήμερα λέμε μαλλιά αλλά όταν πάμε για κούρεμα λέμε πάω στο κομμω-τήριο, δηλαδή χρησιμοποιούμε την αρχαία λέξη κόμμη και ούτω καθεξής. Kitty Goursolle It is our honor to help the travellers, since God Zeus was the Protector of travellers in ancient Greece. It is an ancient obligation for the Greeks to open their houses to travellers, to offer food to them and a bed to sleep.. If any Greek was harming a traveller he was damned by the Gods, so everyone in ancient Greece was helping the travellers in order to be blessed by the Gods.. Also when someone is visiting Greece, we feel proud for that visit and we like to help them to discover places that only Greeks know.. I personally always help tourists in the subway to find their destination and always say to them secret places to visit that are not in the touristic maps..

It's crazy how influential Greek is to this day. In Finnish there are hundreds of quite important words that are of Greek origin - the foundation of the Western civilization. But even though it's an Indo-European language the grammar is surpisingly familiar, quite inflected and sense making :)

Hi Paul - I grew up in Cyprus in an English family hearing Greek all around me. At nearly 67 I have decided I want to learn some basic Greek and be able to speak simply with locals I encounter on holiday. Although I know many phrases from childhood, the cases and inflections intimidate me currently. I hope I will get a basic grasp when the course starts. I'll be learning it in German, which will complicate it (that was my experience of learning Italian in German too). All the best, Rob in Switzerland

I have studied ancient Greek, because I have loved Greek history and Philosophy until today(the time now).) Firstly, I apologize that I can speak only a little bit of modern Greek.(And I regret that I didn't write any accents on the text because I have no grave and circumplex in my Iphone.) I'm studying Attic Greek in Korea, and I have just started to learn modern Greek since only few weeks ago. Although I'm not a native Greek speaker, and nor ancient Greek, I could recognize some words from modern Greek. Even here, I can understand some 'short' sentences native Greek wrote. Maybe they can recognize my Greek, too. Well... unless it is not that terribly broken. It was an awesome experience. Because for me, I can't understand my language which was written in 15th C or 16th C without special training. That's why I decided to learn modern Greek. As someone said, "Greek never have been disappeared." The oldest living language of which we know the history. And forgive me if I made any mistakes on writing Attic Greek. Someday I'll study Greek more and communicate with native speakers(whom I love so much) in their own language.

Yet we cannot ever call Syria a place without civilization. They certainly had great moments of enlightenment, although never as everlasting as Greece. But nontheless, I am glad that Syria is part of the Eastern Mediterranean. The Eastern Mediterranean is (one of) the most intriguing and history rich regions in the world, with the Balkans, Greece, Turkey(Anatolia) Syria, Iraq, Egypt, etc are filled with many of the most impressive and oldest archaeological sites and history on the planet.

On September 26, 1957 and October 2, 1959 in Washington, as part of the World Bank Annual Meetings, Mr. Xenophon Zolotas, a famous and highly educated Greek, delivered two speeches in English using (exclusively) Greek words. Not ancient ..... but words used by the Greeks, as they are, from Antiquity until today, in their daily lives and not only!!! Mr. Zolotas was a great Economist, who at the age of 24 became a University Professor, for a number of years Governor of the Bank of Greece and Prime Minister. who by many has now been accepted as one of the most important personalities of the last century). The special element was that he used throughout his speech words that were of Greek origin and are used in English. The audience watching the IMF meeting was speechless and Zolotas's speech became historic with him and his wife making headlines in the NYT and "Washington Post". (Somebody must be fluent in English and Greek to be able to write two such speeches. I will quote you the first one.) The speech was: ''Kyrie, I eulogize the archons of the Panethnic Numismatic Thesaurus and the Ecumenical Trapeza for the orthodoxy of their axioms, methods and policies, although there is an episode of cacophony of the Trapeza with Hellas. I emphasize my eucharistia to you Kyrie, to the eugenic and generous American Ethnos and to the organizers and protagonists of this Amphictyony and the gastronomic symposia. Η δεύτερη ομιλία στις 2 Οκτωβρίου 1959: Kyrie, It is Zeus’ anathema on our epoch for the dynamism of our economies and the heresy of our economic methods and policies that we should agonise between the Scylla of numismatic plethora and the Charybdis of economic anaemia. It is not my idiosyncrasy to be ironic or sarcastic but my diagnosis would be that politicians are rather cryptoplethorists. Although they emphatically stigmatize numismatic plethora, energize it through their tactics and practices. Our policies have to be based more on economic and less on political criteria.Our gnomon has to be a metron between political, strategic and philanthropic scopes. Political magic has always been antieconomic. In an epoch characterised by monopolies, oligopolies, menopsonies, monopolistic antagonism and polymorphous inelasticities, our policies have to be more orthological. But this should not be metamorphosed into plethorophobia which is endemic among academic economists. Numismatic symmetry should not antagonize economic acme. A greater harmonization between the practices of the economic and numismatic archons is basic. Parallel to this, we have to synchronize and harmonize more and more our economic and numismatic policies panethnically. These scopes are more practical now, when the prognostics of the political and economic barometer are halcyonic. The history of our didymous organisations in this sphere has been didactic and their gnostic practices will always be a tonic to the polyonymous and idiomorphous ethnical economics. The genesis of the programmed organisations will dynamize these policies. I sympathise, therefore, with the aposties and the hierarchy of our organisations in their zeal to programme orthodox economic and numismatic policies, although I have some logomachy with them. I apologize for having tyrannized you with my hellenic phraseology. In my epilogue, I emphasize my eulogy to the philoxenous autochthons of this cosmopolitan metropolis and my encomium to you, Kyrie, and the stenographers.''
