OMG. I spent three wonderful years in Greece and the heavy, thick semolina cake was one of my absolute favorites. It was made by cooking the semolina in the butter first, then pouring the boiling milk over it. I will definitely try this recipe as well. Looks gorgeous.

I heard about Grits in various American Comedies & Songs but never thought of It being something like this😮! It makes sense in a way because it can feel gritty especially if not cooked properly😅

Thanks, will try this as I love Greek food i.e. gyros and slouvaki which I've had since the 1970s. My late uncle by marriage was of Albanian ancestry, a small country next to Greece so I also grew up eating Moussaka and Spanikopita! I've been making different Greek salads so will add this to my list! 🥰❤

❤ty I am so fond of custard pie. The store up the hill from the house seasonally sold custard pie. I bet I bought 4 during the season and shared. I think that baker added a tiny touch of nutmeg or cardamom. 🤷‍♀️

This looks similar to the Milk Tart (Melktert)that we have in South Africa. Before baking, we sprinkle the top with cinnamon. I would like to try your version -- it seems to be much easier!

That was clever to paint the top with egg yolk, so it wouldn't look pale and flabby and unappetizing. I may use that trick on various things.

I agree❤ do you apply the egg yolk after the mixture has cooled a bit or just put on top of hot mixture and let the oven do the rest?

You can spread brown sugar on top,it gives the same result...I think that most Greeks are spreading sugar on top...I do so...😊

English custards are just egg and milk. No thickening. They have nutmeg on top. I like little custard tarts but others I know just think they are disgusting.

Я тоже помню в пионерском лагере , в 1962 году готовили такую запеканку да еще и с творогом, а густой ягодный кисель подавали как соус, как же это было вкусно! Я своим детям тоже готовила, но у меня не так вкусно получалось!😊
