The Crossroads battle was considered by Winters as Easy Company’s finest performance in battle. Everything was conducted perfectly and done so with minimal casualties. The miniseries condenses a few things, but gets the whole story down correctly. In the actual battle, Winters and his men charged the German positions at the same time with cover fire from two Browning .30caliber machine guns; but because of the adrenaline coursing in his body, Winters arrived a head of everyone. When confronting the German sentry, Winters originally threw a grenade at the men, but forgot to remove the safety tape that held the spring together, so it didn’t go off. At that point, the German sentry threw a grenade at Winters, but for some reason, this grenade didn’t explode either. Quickly thinking, Winters fired his M1 Garand from the hip and hit him. After killing the German sentry, Winters unloaded two full clips from his M1 Garand into the Germans taking cover from the incoming MG fire. Too occupied with the incoming fire, being weighed down in heavy clothing, and the poor leadership lead the Germans to retreat as the American paratroopers poured small arms fire down on them while Winters called for British artillery to fire on them. Two entire SS companies were routed at the Crossroads and the later attack that came on the area failed in part to Easy Company’s heroics. The part the miniseries skips over is the other attack Winters made against the Germans. After they were routed at the Crossroads, Winters brought up another platoon of men to go after the Germans. However, as they approached the ferry crossing, the Germans were able to regroup and fend off the attack. Winters and his men fell back to the crossroads, and as they did so, that’s when the German artillery came down on them and wounded several men. Sgt. Dukeman was the only KIA in the battle from the previous night, killed by a German rifle grenade as he stood out in the open trying to get his men to spread out more. All of the paratroopers wounded by the German artillery would survive.

Peacock was known as a 100% by the book and order officer so him telling the men to wait until the smoke (per Winter's order) stunting the Soldiers instinct to follow Winter's lead is a nice, subtle detail.

I really like Peacock, as I understand it he's a guy that was personally liked by those under him but as an officer rather disliked by those same men, and an not very good at being an officer, but the men Under him managed to pick up the slack

Winters was absolutely one of those hyper-competent officers and totally deserved all the love he got from his men. The battalion Colonel Robert Sink considered him one of the finest officers he ever had the chance to command.

The first time i watched BoB, i thought Winters was too good to be true and was one of these Marty Sue they were putting in TV shows and movie in the 80s and the 90s. Then i started to look into it, and found that they _downplayed_ some of his actual heroism. And this is true for some of the other officers and NCO.

I had read somewhere that Winters often led from the front not because he intended to, but because he was the fastest runner in the battalion. Under the push of adrenaline he couldn't pace himself to the rest of the unit.

Jimmy Fallon is playing Lt. George C Rice. He was nominated for the Medal of Honor after making 8 supply runs for the 101st, the 8th one being made *after* the Germans had surrounded the Americans.

Later episodes after Winters gets promoted focus on the NCOs being the only fellas holding the unit together during the worst of times … the show highlights the importance of NCOs pretty heavily after Winters moves up to regiment … and the real Winters never took credit himself and always highlighted the NCOs and veteran rifleman …

Lt Welsh never notified the patrol probably due to Welsh being drunk, which resulted in Lt. Heyliger being shot. Which is why in the next episode someone says moose is gonna make it and Winter shoots a glaring look at Welsh

Welsh, iirc, did have a drinking problem. It’s one of the reasons why he kept getting promoted to Sgt and then demoted back to Private whilst in the unit. But, the leadership in the 82nd saw his potential and once he recieved his battlefield commission, he was transferred to the 101st. Also, in case you’re wondering as I was, Welsh was not present for the 82nd’s landing in Sicily. However, there is one Easy Co member that did have combat experience before the D-Day jump.

@@twrampage this was during his time as a member of the 82nd Airborne. Everytime he was promoted, he would get into an altercation that would lead him to be bumped back down to Private, usually due to drunkenness. However, the brass kept seeing the potential in him, which is why he kept getting the promotions. Once he recieved his battlefield commission, that was when he was transferred to the 101st.

Can relate to hating being cold. I used to say, like lots of people, that I'd rather be cold than hot "because you can put on more layers but you can't take off anything more after a point". Oh what a fool I was. When I was in Iraq I was pulling guard duty in the tower. My buddy and I were supposed to be relieved shortly after nightfall, so we didn't bring any snivel gear. The drop in temp at night in the desert has to be experienced to be believed. During the day it was mid 80s. At night it dripped below freezing. Our relief didn't wake up, and we were there all night, in a guard tower exposed to the wind (which was blowing like hell), standing/sitting on a steel plate that conducted the heat right out of us, in our lightweight DCUs, temp in the high 20s, all night. Nothing around for quite a distance (we were driven out to the outer perimeter), and no commo because our logistics were all messed up and a lot of our equipment wasn't in yet. If something happened, gunfire would be how we would alert everyone. We were so cold were stole the toilet paper out of the portajohn, dumped the water bottles out of the cardboard boxes and tore the boxes up, and even broke up the wooden pallets the water bottles were sitting on. We started a fire in an ammo can with all that stuff and still were hypothermic by the time the morning shift came out to get us. I felt cold for a long time after that no matter what I did. Takeaway message: With heat, if you have some shade and enough water, you'll be miserable but fine no matter the temp. With cold, past a certain low temp, your life is on a timer and when it runs out, you freeze. There are many more reasons why cold is so much worse. (How you have to move to generate heat, which burns more calories and also can make you sweat which makes you lose more water and then the sweat freezes on you when you stop moving making you even colder etc) So give me any high temperature short of a volcano, any day over cold weather. Screw. Being. Cold.

In this episode when he told Lebgot to drop his ammo and bring all POWs back to the CP alive was such a smart move. The enemy soldiers know when we're out of ammo because they hear the ping That's why he said " You drop one soldier and the rest will jump you" Captain Winters knew a lot of these guys were very emotional and would probably do something stupid.

Leibgott also had a reputation for being extremely aggressive in combat and HATING the Germans so yeah those POWs may not have made it back otherwise.

One thing that they didn't show was that field was covered in tanglefoot that the British had left. I've had the chance to visit that area and watched two guys make that run from the ditch at the west side up to the road embankment. It took a full minute for them to cover that distance... no weapon, no gear, no helmet. I can only imagine how they did it back in October 1944.

I feel that Winters was portrayed like this because of the veterans interviews, they all had the nicest and most respectull things to say about him. So the character might be an overall incarnation of the vision that these soldiers had of him, but it can't be too far from what the real guy was really like.

Not a bad observation. Like they say in the breakdown there's always good guys out there. The difference is that this one had a book and series made about what he did. Having read Winters book, I personally feel he was a legend of his own ego.

Easy Company went from Soebel to Meehan to Winters to Heyliger to Dike and finally Spiers. That is 6 commanding officers in 6 months. Before becoming the Easy CO, Dike had been awarded two bronze stars for Heroism in Holland and Bastogne. They never show that at Foy Dike was seriously wounded in the first few minutes of the assault.

This is when Tom Hanks literally takes the reigns in the series...becoming more introspective with Winters. Long before PTSD was even taken seriously. General Patton famously addressed it with the back of his hand on a soldiers face. The back and forth between the typewriter and gunfire is done brilliantly. I appreciate the insight on the assault position, you would think that was a given but you're right, it's not, great story. I say "common sense isn't as common as it used to be." Good units have their target prioritization down to SOPs. I was DEFINITELY NOT SF, just regular infantry in Canada. But we had that. When we fanned out and got ready to engage, the place YOU occupied, designated the target YOU fired at... Unless otherwise specified! It works like the arcs of fire in a defensive position, dividing the area into distinct, but overlapping or touching, kill zones. I thought that it was like that everywhere else...

My grandfather's brother is a Vietnam vet. He only told my grandfather this syory when he was extremely drunk. They had a friendly fire incident where an entire platoon of Marines was wiped out because the guy on sentry duty fell asleep while the platoon was out on patrol, and when they got back the sounds woke him up and he thought it was the enemy

BTW Id love to see you guys react to Brothers In Arms Road to Hill 30, its a early 2000's game but the squad based gameplay focuses on being a realistic reenactment, the cool thing about it is that its the closest thing to Band of Brothers in a video game (follows the 502 instead). If you want to see anything on it check out RETRO JANK I just finished a full playthrough of it on the hardest difficulty. I think you would appreciate the way they show how to shoot move and communicate, Colonel John Antal was their adviser through the production and made sure it was as good as they could have made it back in like 2003.

So the question I've always had with the crossroads attack: Did Winters really mean for there to be -that- much delay from when he popped the smoke until it ignited? Or was it intentional, he knows the fuse is however many seconds, he knows it'll take a second or two for the smoke to really pop, and he wants that much time between his initial exposure and assessment and the rest of the men attacking? And yet one more or: was it just his perspective, his point of view, where those few seconds of the smoke fully igniting slowed down and seemed like entire minutes? Of course it's played up screen for dramatic effect, but they added the detail of one man getting up and the other saying, "wait for the signal!". What do you think? I personally think it was intentional but it probably felt like forever to him. I don't know if a WWII era red smoke grenade is a 3.5 second fuse or not, but I can imagine it seemed like five minutes when you crest a hill into an entire enemy company.

Random semi-related comment. Last month at my redneck service rifle match, I show up and like half the dudes have bayonets. Apparently April is bayonet month or something. First dude to shoot has an M1 Garand so he puts his bayonet on and takes his shot at the first 100 yard plate. I see it splash at the top of the 300 hundred yard berm. I tell him "you're shooting waaay high up over the berm." I figured he forgot to reset his sights from last time but the old guys there say "oh its probably the bayonet." He takes the bayonet off and just center punches the next plate. Putting a bayonet on his rifle was making it shoot about FOUR FEET high at 100 yards. So that earlier episode when Bull tells the privates they won't hit anything with their bayonet mounted is apparently true.

Absolute truth! about common sense, a saying that I took from my father an Army Sargeant who had 2 tours in Vietnam 66' -68'.
