Hi everyone! Today's video is SFF Spotlight Episode 63! This series of videos is to spotlight three main things (Special Editions, Cover Reveals, and Book/Series Announcement) in the science fiction and fantasy genre within a certain set of time. And yes, the videos will cover both traditionally published and self-published SFF books.

The greenbone saga has had one of the most mixed receptions on IG, lol. People say the covers do not match the edges... and I can see that. However, those edges are amazing. My only thing is that I wished the middle book had kept the reddish tone and that the titles were a bit... more colorful. That's one thing I liked from the originals

Thank you for the kind words! Yeah that's fair. We knew this would spark a mixed reception. But we also want to try employing a stained glass used in Southeast Asian restaurants to the edges. Sorry it did not click with everyone!!

@@PetrikLeoit seems most people like the designs, just not together. Both artists have very few pieces of art in the stained glass style. Probably would’ve been best to find a stained glass artist to help with the designs and commit to the style with the entire book and not just the edges. The 2 styles fight against each other.

Many things happened behind the scene, but IF next time I get to work on edges, I'll go with edges complimenting the cover art more than having them two stand out individually. I've seen people say they do not like the edges for the Green Bone Saga books, that they dont match the book cover art. I disagree. Ive not yet read the series. But regardless, the impression i get is when you see a beautiful iced cake. The icing is decorative, and pretty, and so classic in design (think a wedding cake), and then you slice the knife in and SHOCK the cake itself is marbled and full of beautiful patterns and flavours. A lovely surprise within a beautiful veneer.

@@PetrikLeo you're welcome! I am quite shocked people really dislike it, because the way the two art styles collide is quite honestly stunning. The front covers are very literal, so the touch of stained glass on the sides adds a level of artistry that I think elevates the entire product. I'd go so far as to say this is my favourite looking edition yet from Broken Binding. Of course I'm awaiting the Malazan set with bated breath.

I think I'm in the minority here and I don't want to be overly harsh, but I'm disappointed in the result and think it's a big miss. The first cover looks like an amateur urban fantasy cover. The second and third are better but the "blurry" style (especially the background) does not look great. Coupling those issues with the odd sprayed edges is at best confusing, and at worst discordant.

I‘ve read some real vitriolic comments about the artwork for GBS and yes many say the edges don’t match and I get it, however I think the stained glass effect looks great and will probably look even better in real life. I wish everyone who hates the artwork so much would just shut up and skip, giving others a chance to enjoy these lovely editions. Instead people are bitching how much they hate the artwork and in the same breath offering their set, not even in hand yet, for £300! I for one would be over the moon to have these beautiful editions.

That cover art of Jade Legacy is heartbreaking! I can't wait! Absolutely getting On the Shoulder of Titans too, already locked that in. Still not read The Other Magic but I did back it because of how pretty the book was so I'll back the second book too when it's live. A book I backed that I don't think I've seen you mention is The Bartender Between Worlds by Herman Steuernagel, I don't really know much about it but the cover art game me a gender bent Kvothe vibe so I pretty much had to, looking forward to it. Speaking of Kvothe, I won't be buying The Doors of Midnight, the first book was so bad I don't think it can be saved, I can't even sell the copies I have for fear of someone reading them. Not read the 3 Body Problem books but I did enjoy the show, the last episode was a bit of a let down but I'll be back for more seasons, should be good. So hype for Arcane season 2 too, I'm sure 2 seasons is a good thing, just hope they keep making other great shows in this world! Still trying to decide if I want to watch House of the Dragon as it's coming out or wait for it all and only pay 1 month of NowTV, would be nice to see it but got so many other things to enjoy right now like The Acolyte and DrWho hahaha... wow, can't say that with straight face, those are so bad, even the Wheel of Time or Rings of Power shows look competent by comparison! But do have The Boys at least and Shadow of the Erdtree which might manage to pull me away from Helldivers 2 for the first time since I started playing that! Congrats again on the art direction for the Greenbone Saga, they look fantastic!

It sounds like it might be exactly my thing. I hadn't heard of the Neuromancer edition from Folio Society. I will have to watch for that. Neuromancer is such an influential book. If I could give some feedback regarding the Green Bone Saga? I haven't read the books yet, so having the third book showing a funeral is a bit of a spoiler. Going forward, perhaps don't make covers with major scenes that kinda spoil what happens? Overall the covers are beautiful and the edges are fine but they clash a lot when they are together. A shame the artists are seeing the discourse when they separately did a fantastic job🙏

That said, it's certainly one advice we will take into mind for sure moving forward. Traditional drawing with pencil and ink! I used to do it more often before starting to read novels. I wouldn't say I'm good at it, though. Recently, I've been trying to learn more about digital painting thanks to many fantasy artists. But gaming, drawing, and writing are some of my hobbies I'm not sure I'll ever publicize as I fear they might make me decrease my passion for them.

There’s an upcoming game that might interest ppl seems to be dark souls meets a machine uprising. Called Forever Winter. Two AI machine armies fight each other in a post apocalyptic war, but you’re not part of it. You have to survive and scavenge food and tech. I mention it here because it sounds so different. Lots of monsters and robots 🤷‍♂️

Jade City's cover looks like Harry Potter with Slytherin jewelry on. And like a YA novel's cover. The other covers look awesome but edges don't fit with them at all. This will be first subscription series where I know I won't be showing edges on the shelf. And from what I've seen in TBB Facebook group I'm not the only one disappointed, far from it.

Hey, that's fair! We knew when we were discussing and going with this it would cause a very mixed reception. But we also want to try employing Southeast Asian stained glass art into the edges to fit the theme of Asian-inspired urban fantasy. Unfortunate that it didn't work with many people, but also I guess that's the price of trying something new! :/

Green bone saga covers and edges look good individually but look pretty bad together imo.

Totally understandable and fair criticism! I have read many opinions stating the same. Definitely learned a lot from it. IF, and this is a big if, I will make sure the edges complement the cover art rather than having them stand out individually. 🙂

I am sorry to say the green one art just doesn't work for me, Ive liked the rest of the stuff you've worked on so far but this just doesn't work. I had a sanity check and looked at the TBB Instagram announcement and I saw most comments shared my opinion. I would prefer it get delayed and improved but it is what it is.

Hey that's fair! Thank you for the kind support. We definitely tried something risky and new with this. Seems like the reception is extremely mixed. The Broken Binding is looking into the situation and will make a statement soon. :)

Yeah those sprayed edges are horrible. I certainly hope they change it, this is the 1st time I have been utterly disappointed in any BB edition. First time I will skip a series.

Don't get me wrong!! I loved TBB edition for the green bone Saga, and I won't be skipping. My worry was what the next series will be!! My all time favorite it's Red Rising and I think it's one of yours too. So.... 🫣 My heart skips a beat to know the next one 😅😅
