I wasn't a huge reader until I reached my 40's. Now it's my favorite pastime. The book that did it for me was "All Quiet On the Western Front. " But now I mostly read fantasy and science fiction stuff. Glad there is so much to look forward to!

Even though you don't love The Hobbit, I still love you.😁I happen to be finishing the Dark Tower series today, and I would be curious to hear your take if you do read it. Your relationship with the Mistborn Trilogy is exactly what I have with Raymond E. Feist's Riftwar Saga. As a kid I couldn't put down Magician and I must have read it through three times before discovering there were more books in the series. I've certainly read many more books and series that are better in most aspects, but it was the catalyst for my love of the genre and will always have a special place in my heart because of it.

I agree with your sentiment concerning The Hobbit. The Lord of the Rings is my personal favorite of all time but I never liked The Hobbit very much. I think if I read it as a kid I would've fallen in love with it but I didn't read it until I was an adult and it reads completely differently than TLOTR, which was specifically written for adults. It's the same reason I didn't care for the Harry Potter books. They're all written at a 3rd grade (8-9 year old) reading level and that's exactly how they read. Despite all that happens in them, and their overall quality of writing (which is well polished), they're extremely childish, immature, and shallow in comparison as far as overall concepts, and emotional depth/maturity, are concerned. Nothing about them being challenging (in a good way) for the mind. (I DNF'd the series half way through the 4th book (the Goblet of Fire) and have lityle interest in returning to it.)
@PetrikLeo

Yeahh! I think I would've enjoyed The Hobbit so much more if I had read it when I was young. Like you, I read it as an adult for the first time, and I found it so... disappointing. xD I read Harry Potter books when I was in middle school, though, so I guess that's also why I enjoyed book 4-6. I never did a reread of the books again. xD

2:50 bruh... But I agree with many of your points here! I think that The Storms of Swords was almost impeccable and that the last hundred-or-so pages of The Last Argument of Kings was just mind blowing. Like seriously, one of those moments when you can't put the book down no matter what. I haven't read several of the series from this list, but I have heard some great things about The Realm of the Elderlings and The Faithful and the Fallen. And as for the series that I would recommend that didn't make it on the list are The Witcher by Andrzej Sapkowski and - one of my personal favorites - The Chronicles of Amber by Roger Zelazny - absolute feast for imagination!

Congrats on 20k! And kudos to you for your dedication - so clearly shown by the work you did for the list. It probably is the natural reason behind your Booktube success. Simply crazy that there are three series in the number one spot. Another crazy thing is that I have read or dipped my feet in all series from four to one. This is crazy because of the 31 series in the list, I have only read everything published of eight, and tried three other, which I will probably not continue. Simply have to venture into some less popular series now 🙂. Anyway, great to see the love for the Realm of the Elderlings - my favourite series so far.

It’s Malazan for me. That series has ruined me for any other writer/series. It’s so hard but so rewarding, there’s nothing else like it. I wonder how many folk started it and gave up as it’s so ‘WTF is going on?!’ I still haven’t tried Sanderson or Hobb but I recently tried Robert Jordan against my better judgement and it just felt to me like it was so influenced by LOTR that it was unoriginal and actually a bit annoying. Then tried Abercrombie after all the rave reviews I’d seen of that series online and it’s just frankly meh against utter majesty and splendour of Malazan. Erickson has literally killed this genre for me! I guess like everything it’s subjective and no doubt not for everyone but if you haven’t tackled it yet and are up for a highly rewarding and sometimes frustrating challenge, give it a go!

All this mindless Sanderson-follower hype… Shallan's first chapter is one of the worst chapters ever. It’s so boring and dreadful… Sanderson is not a good writer at humor… I really loved what Sanderson did with "Wheel of Time" because he cut to the chase, moved the plot along and didn’t add to the world-building (which was already massive). He wrapped up a series which was pre-built and needed a final piece added to the puzzle. He did a great job, but I think he seems to be better at finishing what others have started than starting something on his own. I don’t want to hear about what type of dress Shallan is wearing or why, or what style that I’ve never heard of is supposed to be in fashion in a world I’m not even familiar with. I don’t even care about fashion in New York or L.A. so I really could not care less about fashion in Sanderson’s world that he’s building here. But hey if you love fashion and you subscribe to Vogue or GQ, maybe you’ll enjoy this chapter more than me. I would normally say it’s quite possible this book is more geared towards female readers who like dresses and the latest fashions, yet I don’t even understand how this could be, because the chapter before this one had a slave get his brains bashed in with a cudgel and usually female readers don’t like that kind of stuff, so I don’t know why there are so many fans of this book when it doesn't seem like it would appeal to anyone to me, since it has things that turn off both male and female readers. I’m baffled this book has so many fans. It’s odd to juxtapose a chapter with a brain bashing and a chapter concerned with the latest fashion of dresses, but if other people think this is perfectly normal and not odd at all than whatever. It’s really weird to me for some reason. If you like books that are heavy on world-building, then this is the series for you. The problem is in my opinion it prioritizes this element over other elements I like more, like plot, likable characters, humor, dialogue, action, etc. The heavy world-building put me to sleep and this audiobook is useful as a sleep aid I suppose. When I woke up I was 6 hours into the audiobook at the chapter where Shallan has gone off the horrible ship and she is exploring a town and she is buying old books from a store. I’m glad I didn't hear more fashion descriptions of dresses but instead I was subjected to a very mundane trip to an antique bookstore that made me feel like the author was recounting a chapter from his personal life of the time he went with his wife book shopping and they went to some cute little store and haggled with the store owner to get a better deal and there are so many things that I can tell are interesting to Sanderson that I don’t give a damn about and it’s hard for me to enjoy this chapter either. Then at the end of the chapter she meets with the shape-shifter or soul-shifter lady she is trying to get to accept her as a ward so she can gain some kind of status for her family and the lady tells her that because she is a good artist and she pursues scholarly endeavors purely for no other reason than for the sake of learning, that is such a virtue that it’s akin to joining the peace corps or helping the homeless to draw people and paint portraits that makes you a combination of saint and Rhodes scholar so she tells her that she accepts her as her ward. Shallan was just born perfect, or at least characters in the book think she is.

Hobbit, hate it, I don't recommend that boring journey to new fantasy readers, love your channel though, Dark Tower - soooo over rated, they need to get off Stephen Kings nuts. I never could get past the first three or four chapters of G.R.R. Martin, great tv series but that kind of "political" intrigue in my fantasy books is not for me. Great list though, different from a lot of these book tube people, thanks

Wheel of time is so good, it’s just so long lol. But I recently finished and I just sat there for like an hour in disbelief cause I didn’t know what to do after spending over a year reading the books. So I started malazan lol I’m very happy greenbone saga made it so far, I’m currently waiting to start the 3rd book, but it’s world building and character work are incredible though I’m not of the opinions it’s better than wheel of time Not sure mistborn is as good as ranked either

Let's see what you think of The Green Bone Saga after you finished the third book. I consider Jade Legacy to be one of the greatest fantasy books out there. That being said, I'm not done with Wheel of Time, too. And yeah, it''s really long. 🤣 It will be a while before I finished the series, but fingers crossed I'll feel the same about it as you did! 😃
@Valiguss
@Valiguss Жыл бұрын
@@PetrikLeo yeah so far it’s been so good, honestly way better than mistborn, which I found underwhelming compared to stormlight which I started with. But greenbone saga has character work that’s just so on point. I hope I love book 3 as much as everyone else seems to. I think personally the action is better, and the character work is at least on par with wheel of time. Though the more epic feel and better world imo of wot wins out for me. You really just have to stick with wheel of time, it’s so good, but the middle can be rough and it can be frustrating how nobody can ever make decisions sometime. But the last 2 or 3 books was so perfect in terms of climactic moments, I know people have mixed feelings about Sanderson finishing and while he maybe wasn’t the best in some ways he really can deliver those like fist pumping moments like no one else, and some of the scenes he wrote there at the end of wot rival some of the best moments of Stormlight like the wor duel or defeated one fight.

I completely agree with #1. Nothing will ever top The Lord of the Rings in terms of the depth of the world building, the epic scale, the characters, pacing and especially the writing. I love that it's not just modern themes and conflicts in a fantasy setting, it's 100 % authentic. We're always on the lookout for those rare gems that can completely immerse us in another world, that have no other purpose than to allow people to escape everyday life by transporting them to another realm. There are lots of great fantasy series out there, but Tolkien’s work will always remain our number one source of inspiration. 💎

The Hobb books as a single series seems odd to me, clearly other authors write in the same universe yet their books are not linked. Not saying its wrong but then using the same logic Bilbo and LOTR is definitely and without any doubt to me the same series
@PetrikLeo
@PetrikLeo Жыл бұрын
The way I see it is that Hobb's series (except Farseer and Liveship) are practically unreadable without reading Farseer and Liveship first, especially the final trilogy. They're all immensely connected. As for LotR, whether it's Silmarillion or The Hobbit, all of them are possible to be read separated from each other. And yes, it's difficult. Because applying this logic to all series will instantly put Sanderson's Cosmere at the number 1 spot by a huge margin. So at the end of the day, I just put whatever the votes are for. Many voted The Realm of the Elderlings instead of them being separate like Hobbit and LotR or Mistborn and Stormlight Archive. I hope that makes sense! 😅

Sorry it didn't work for you! Really liked The Winnowing Flame trilogy and The Dandelion Dynasty. Absolutely with you there. I love Kingkiller - surprised like you that it got only 14 votes. 💯 agree about NOTW. I also love Slow Regard Of Silent Things equally. Memory, Sorrow and Thorn is good. I haven't continued with The Last King of Osten Ard after Book 1. May try after Book 4 is out in 2023. Grew up with Harry Potter so I love them. Read and reread ASOIAF this year. Really liked it. And I really liked Fire and Blood too. Read ROTE except Rainwild. Liked it but found it very uneven in pacing and structure. Tawny Man is my favourite. LOTR is the GOAT for me. 🙏🏽 Didn't continue with Dresden Files, Licanius, Broken Earth, Poppy War, Dune, Dark Tower, Malazan after Book 1 - not for me.
