It was the friendship between two unlikely men and how it affects and changes both of them. I, personally, felt that blackkklansman was a bit too in on the racism thing (though given the story I wouldn't complain too much but still), focusing more on just 'racism bad'. I am not saying that it's a bad movie, I just lean more towards green book as it's not the racism subject that is given center stage but rather the unlikely companionship and it's effects. And why different ? Just because something is different doesn't mean they should have gone that way, especially not simply because of it being different. I also believe Roma should have won but not simply because it was a foreign film but rather because I felt it was more deserving. PS. Wasn't Doc also portrayed as lgbtq+ ?

Yes, the movie is heartwarming and funny but Best Picture worthy? Granted it was a weak list of nominees, but when it was up against Roma, The Favourite and Blackkklansman, GB was the weakest one to win. Again, not saying it's garbage, but if the Academy really wanted to propagate a message about racism across, they should've voted Blackkklansman. The ending of Green Book is cute, but not perfect. Since it implies that racism is officially over. But if you watched the very ending of Blackkklansman and if you've been paying attention to the events of 2020, you'd realize it's far from the truth. "The Shape of Water", "Get Out", "Lady Bird", "Phantom Thread", "Three Billboards" - all strong films from a better than average best picture field. More crucially, they were films that not only impressed in a technical sense, but also brought something unique and engaging in terms of narrative and emotional scope. You compare that to the 8 movies listed above, and its rather puzzling to see that kind of downward slope. I say that as among the nominees there was 1 film I loved (The Favourite), 4 that I liked (Roma - Black Panther), and 3 that simply baffled made the cut, to be frank. If this is indicative of the oscar's future, than that's truly disappointing.

Green Book is generic, bland, inoffensive movie whose plot you have already seen many times in movies like Driving Miss Daisy or The Intouchables. It is so predictable that just by looking at the poster you already know that the protagonists end up being friends. One of the worst winners ever.

Green Book is not as bad as Shakespeare in Love or Crash, IMO Green Book was an amazing film with brilliant acting, strong friendship, and beautiful road trip story across America. Sure Roma or A star is born should have won but I think it was a fine choice for the academy to make. Academy is not gonna let Netflix movie to win the best picture, it would have caused controversy between moviegoers and people who watch Netflix. Put social message aside and enjoy and learn from the film.

@@johnatdell Box office doesn't determine quality. No one saw The Shawshank Redemption in theatres. Plus, no one sees foreign films in the theatre. NO ONE. $4 million is pretty good for a movie with a limited release that would be on Netflix within two weeks or already was on Netflix at the time. And anyone who knows a thing about film loves Roma. The group of people you know doesn't represent the entire human race. You probably only talk to movies with people who have the same taste in movies as you. In ten years, no one will give a fuck about Green Book. The same can't be said about Roma.

I studied film in University for my degree in Media Arts, attend TIFF each year and I would not consider it a 'great' film. Anyone who knows a thing about art, knows it is totally subjective. There is no right or wrong. By the way, I don't know what hick town you live in, but we have many review theatres in Toronto where foreign films are played all the time. As beautiful as Roma's cinematography, direction and acting was, it was a very depressing look at the plight of disenfranchised people. I see an abundance of that in every day life and too little of messages of hope and redemption. Personally, I prefer movies that inspire and move the soul.
