"21 Guns" is a reference to a 21 Gun Salute, which is what military members get at their funeral. 7 soldiers in dress uniform and rifles fire into the air three times.

Thanks! I didn't know that and was always wondering why 21 guns

What you described is a three volley salute, not a 21 gun salute. The latter is done with cannons and to commemorate national holidays or to honor heads of state.

Green Day formed in 1987, their first number 1 song was in 1994, from the album “Dookie”. So they’ve been around a lot longer than you might be thinking, and I’m feeling old again, I graduated high school in 87…

Yes, unfortunately they lost a lot of fans when they decided to go mainstream pop rock.

Why do people continually hate on this song and other later Green Day songs calling them "not punk" as if they're not quality? It's arguably my favorite Green Day song, and I just saw them live performing all of Dookie and American idiot.

Fun double-entendre with “arms” Arms meaning guns/weapons, but also, ya know. Literal physical arms. “Lay them down/throw them into the sky” Fun double-entendre while expressing the same meaning: “surrender/strive for peace” Love the reaction!

Green Day is a killer band with a lot of hit songs. LOVE GREEN DAY, all day and long... Thanks, Madalina, for this quick trip back in the day (2009). W Hello from your guy in the States. We love you, Biss. Peace. Later, Love.

A lot of fans hated when Green Day went mainstream and did pop rock instead of punk. Back in the late 80’s they had crazy punk songs which the underground punk scene loved.

Everytime I hear Green Day I get goose bumps 'cause that was the first album (21st Century Breakdown) that I've purchased on my own (with some gift cards I've gotten for my birthday) and listening to sooo many hours while being a teenager
@latech76718 ай бұрын
I think the song that first got me interested in GreenDay was "Boulevard of Broken Dreams" but the one that made me want to listen to way more of their music and really highlighted how talented they are was definitely "Jesus of Suburbia" If you want something a bit newer that basically has no reactions on KZbin I would recommend "Forever Now" as a more unknown but I think highly underappreciated and from them
@albertomagana65778 ай бұрын
Hello Bisscute, honestly at first the lyrics of the song didn't make sense to me, I couldn't understand what the song was about, sad? loneliness? defeat? Later I found out that the lyrics actually question the young Americans who went to the Iraq War and came back ruined. 21 apparently is the number of salvos that are fired when a soldier dies, which is why the song invites you to surrender. It's easy to get confused like I did, especially because the video shows a couple and makes you think it's a love song, but in reality it's an anti-war song, at that moment I understood everything. I liked the music. My suggestion for another reaction is to Boy Marley with the song: Could you be loved. Greetings and a hug from Mexico City.

21 guns probably refers to the 21 gun salute, I think, which is a very old military tradition where there's a firing of cannons or artillery, or sometimes with a team of rifles, to honor the arrival or presence of someone very important, done to honor them at their funeral, or just in general to commemorate or celebrate something of great significance. There are different versions, and it's not necessarily always 21 guns. I believe that the origin of the tradition goes back centuries, where a naval ship would fire it's cannons out to sea to expend all powder and shot that they had left, in order to signal surrender, and that they were no longer a threat. From the lyrics, it sounds like that's the context that is being used in the song.

Another Green Day video I'd highly recommend is the music video for Jesus of Suburbia. But I'd recommend the version that's almost 12 minutes long, instead of the short version. Yes, it's pretty long, but it's definitely worth it and it goes by really fast! Either that or I'd also recommend the video for Wake me Up When September Ends. It's so heartbreakingly beautiful!

Music is art.. It can be interpreted in many ways.. My personal interpretation of this song, was that we can all get along and stop conflict WORLDWIDE. "Lay down your arms, give up the fight... Throw up your arms into the sky... YOU AND I" I know every country, territory, state, village etc.. has different values.. I know it's my own "Pipe Dream" to have that kind of peace... That's just my interpretation of this artists song. When it comes to interpretations, there is no right or wrong. I guess my own personal hopes biased my take on this song. Fantastic reaction video! Thank you so much for sharing it with us! 😎

I have such a love-hate relationship with Green Day. Growing up I loved them unequivocally Nimrod to this day is one of my favorite albums. Everybody including me liked them because they were so anti-establishment and anti-government. The lead singer Billy Joe Armstrong is famous for just walking out of performances because he's unhappy with the way things were handled. There's a really funny video of then performing at an award ceremony. And you know those things have time limits that everybody has to stick with. But Justin Bieber also performed and went away over his time. So when Green Day took the stage they had their clock in their face showing them how much time they have left on stage and they had 1 minute..... Just one and they were expected to do an entire song in 1 minute. And Billy Joe was not having it. That 1 minute just turned into him absolutely extoriating the entire thing. And he ended by saying "I don't need this shit I've been around since fucking 1989." But it's a love-hate relationship because Green Day was I think the very first celebrity group to come out and call people who didn't vaccinate and didn't quarantine, Awful people that don't deserve to live. The biggest anti-establishment band except for System Of a Down. Went full Hitler on vax mandates. Mandates that killed HUNDREDS of thousands when Covid itself never would have killed so many.
