When it first came out I didn't think much of it but it grew on me. 21 Guns refers to the military tradition of a 21 gun salute (normally for a fallen soldier of some importance and normally 3 volleys of 7 guns) but the lyrics question whats worth fighting for and whats worth dying for - maybe if it aint worth dying for put your gun down put your hands in the air (surrender) and live to fight another day forgoing your 21 gun salute - the video paints this in the light of a relationship which is also relevant - knowing when to give up the fight and also what is worth fighting for in a relationship.

I wrote this song for them after their computer fried. No. It is not a reference to that other--. That verse is saying basically this: We walk on eggshells around the people we love.... Ok, it is just a coincidence that you can connect said stuff and that kind of connection makes great discussion, I guess.... So you know: We all hated George W. Bush while making this album of theirs, for he got us into a senseless war that can never be won.... This is what the overarching plot is about in a huge sense for control....
