Former Guns N' Roses drummer Matt Sorum probably put it best when he tweeted out, "I thought Billie Joe Armstrong's rant was the most punk rock thing he's ever done. then he had to go and ruin it by apologizing. corporate rock is alive and well. never really bought that band anyways," he would conclude. It was a funny statement considering it was Green Day who inducted Matt Sorum into the Rock N' Roll Hall of Fame with Guns and Roses just five months prior in April of 2012. drinking and shenanigans seemed to be part of Green Day's image. from their humble beginnings from California, they appeared to be just three punk rock kids who wanted to make great music with the help of a little lubricants. In fact, even after the band got famous, the band's singer Billie Joe Armstrong admitted to Rolling Stone in 2013 that he had anxiety getting onstage in front of people and would reveal alcohol would help alleviate some of the nerves admitting, "I played on stage loaded a lot. I'd have anywhere from two to six beers and a couple of shots before I went on stage then I'd go out and play the gig and drink for the rest of the evening on the bus, fall asleep, wake up the next day, feel like crap, do soundcheck. it was over and over again. In that way,
I was a functioning alcoholic. Green Day is a very polarizing band on my channel, just like several other bands I've covered in the past including Dave Matthews Band, garbage, Foo Fighters and Linkin Park. I'm not afraid to admit that I like Green Day. granted, I'm a fan of their earlier work prior to them getting signed to a major label and of course, I was a big fan of "Dookie" in 1994 and 2004's "American Idiot", I was also a fan of. I even checked out their musical "American Idiot" a couple of years ago and absolutely loved it but I've always felt like for the last 10 years and for the 10 years prior to that, Green Day was always living in the shadow of "Dookie" and then they were also living in the shadow of "American Idiot". 2009 would see the release of "21st Century Breakdown", which I felt was a mediocre record. I still remember living up north at the time and hearing "know your enemy" and "21 guns'' played over and over again on Sirius XM hits one. three years later the band was set to do something a lot of bands don't do, while double albums get released every now and then by certain bands who are really ambitious, record labels aren't a fan of the move because the results in the records cost more than their competition and therefore hurts their bottom line. Green Day did something completely different. They had recorded so much material by the summer of 2012, they put out three individual albums called "uno", "dos" and "Tre", whose release dates would be roughly a month apart in the later part of 2012. each record would feature a different member on the cover. Personally I've always liked "uno" and "tre" the best. "dos", I could take it or leave it. Prior to the first of the three albums coming out, which was "uno", the band was out promoting the crap out of the record. they were showing up on venues that traditionally rock bands wouldn't go on, including America's Got Talent and The Voice. I don't really watch these shows and Howard Stern being on America's Got Talent wasn't enough for me to tune into that awful show. for those of you who don't know, IHeartRadio used to be called Clear Channel. yes, Howard Stern's former boss, when he was on terrestrial radio. After Stern left, the failing company had tried to rebrand itself with little luck. Since 2010 they had been holding the annual iHeartRadio Music Festival which brings together artists from various genres or so it's marketed. in reality is more heavily leaning towards pop music. Green Day had their "uno" album coming out in September of 2012 and about a week before the record dropped they played the festival and they were joined by a pretty eclectic lineup including Usher, psy, if you guys remember Gangnam style, and 'lil wayne. by this point in their career, Green Day were workhorses. They had been working non-stop since 2009 putting out records, doing a musical, touring and of course that type of lifestyle will eventually catch up with you, especially as you get older. at the same time, many people who find themselves in this situation, are too
attracted to the money to stop. In Billie Joe Armstrong's case, he was now part of the 1% that was so vilified at the beginning of the 2010s. that's not to say that money was his motivation,
he's a musician after all and if he's anything like me, I go stir-crazy sitting for too long at home and doing nothing. according to one estimate, Billie Joe Armstrong was the 42nd richest singer in rock n' roll, with a net worth of more than $55 million, making him wealthier than fellow rock legends like Vince Neil and David Lee Roth. Armstrong would tell Rolling Stone in 2013 that, as the Occupy Wall Street move

@Magic 8 Ball Interesting how you don't mention playing the first Green Day album. While most of their discography at this point can't exactly be considered punk [particularly from a classic punk perspective], their albums before Dookie can definitely be considered punk to some capacity. Dookie can be decisive since it is on a major label, but it does have roots of punk in it and it credited for introducing punk to the younger 90s audience. Ik you didn't ask and I apologise, but their earlier albums are pretty important.

@@lesnash6953 I have to respectfully disagree with you. Nobody expected an acoustic ballad by them at that point. The worst they could have done was make Dookie over and over again. Is it my favorite song? No. Not by a long shot. However, the song had been around in some form since 1990. THAT wasn't the sellout moment. The sellout moment was each acoustic ballad AFTER that, hoping for a sure-fire hit. I will say that the first 4 or 5 albums are untouchable. Take care, man!

This is the exact reason why I hate pop music, radio, and just that side of the industry. Like there are good musicians that put out radio hits and some are good people, but I miss the days of the 2000s when more people found really good artists online and mainstream radio didnt know what the fuck to do. So they finally cracked, then started playing more pop punk. Sadly though, they went back to their old bullshit and wont play older 2000s bands again.

I'm not gonna argue for the integrity of that very broken band at the time but if they were a corporate rock band they wouldn't have taken so many years to release Chinese Democracy. Even though hes worth that much, alot of it still has to go to his music and he still has to work his ass off. Just the benefit of being a musician. Like people think it's all about parties and shit, but it's not. Touring does take it out of you, doesnt matter how much money you have when you are on the longest road trip of your life. He will only ever see that money when hes old and the band breaks up. Then he will be in a real situation of spending the majority of his life on the road, has a fuck tone of money, and have to figure out what hes gonna do for the few years he got left until he dies. Even though hes rich and famous, he still has to do a job where hes on the road more than some truck drivers.

@@bobpigs6467 I think Green Day gets a bad rep for their integrity. Even though they did change their sound throughout their career, I don't think their work ethic wavered. And success in the music industry isn't just about talent but also about luck and drive/being a workhorse. Coming out of this scene and end up where Green Day is? Probably took a lot of work and I can respect that, even if their music isn't for me. Same with Foo's only difference is that they've had the adventage of Dave Grohl and by this had an instant audience and media attention. I think the hate lies surely on the more poppy approach Green Day has because in theory, they should've more street cred than the Foo's. Only thing I don't like is that more and more bands change their sound to be played by radio and lose some of their "integrity" along the way but I can't blame them. Must be hard to lose attention/opportunities because the "trend" changed. Of course this is more the case with mainstream success.

Nimrod and Warning are mostly great, underrated albums. I mean on Warning you've got "Blood, Sex & Booze" which is a paean to being a submissive for example, pretty brutally honest from Billie Joe there. Even the first two albums have some pretty poppy rooted songs, it's just the way he writes.

This is why I love this channel. You have unique content & it's neutrally covered. Every band ( every person for that matter) has its share of ups & downs. Clearly the "downs" are covered far more often & usually by a creator that is more concerned with talking shit about them with a total lack of respect because they are not a fan of their music in general. A lot of creators are more concerned with presenting themselves as sarcastically clever than they are about their content being true or factual. This channel is truly the exception. Your videos are informative & verified. They are always presented with respect for the artist(s) whether you're a fan or not. It's a fine line to walk doing all those things & still using current slang in regards to pop culture, but you seem to do it effortlessly with every post. Just wanted to say thanks for all your efforts & sharing your creativity & talents with the rest of us!!☠

Punk Rock, and just Rock 'N' Roll in general is about nonconformity, it's about not being the normal, autotuned, lip syncing performer who had a songwriter write their songs and musicians write songs for them. Billie was going through a hard time just overworking himself and falling into substance abuse again, that doesn't make him a corporate rockstar, that makes him an artist, a performer, a hard worker and everything else. Apologizing was his choice because he knew exactly where he was at in the moment and at the time he said what he said. That doesn't mean he's not a punk or a rocker. He is who he is and that's the most Rock 'N' Roll thing you can be.

It's a totally underrated record, every song on it is great in my opinion, although oddly I didn't care as much for the two songs that became singles and radio staples as I did for all of the other songs on that record that hardly anybody has heard of or cares about.. I think the total running time is under 30 minutes with 14 songs but the songs are so catchy and fun to listen to, who really cares about the length of the disc? I'm of the personal belief that a tantrum like that cannot be excused under any circumstances, drunk High what have you. An apology doesn't make the offense no in void as if it didn't happen, someone saying they are sorry after the fact does nothing. Everybody's so sorry after realizing they fucked up but few seem to put much thought into it before they do it. Nobody's Perfect and nobody can be perfect. I lived in Corvallis, Oregon in the '90s and went to a party at a house near downtown one time in like 1992, and there was a good-sounding band playing inside, in a town that didn't get a lot of good rock shows overall. I was there to see some friends, and they were outside and told me "the keg is dry and the band isn't that great, let's go" and I was like "are you sure? sounds good from here" where I was literally just right outside the wall from where they were playing. I ended up leaving with my friends for whatever reason, but a couple of years later I was told "the band at that party was Green Day" and they'd just had a hit song on MTV which I was unaware of. So yeah, I got to hear them from just the other side of a wall and peeked in at them just briefly but don't remember anything except a band at full-tilt with a bunch of snotty teenagers wandering around disappointed about the keg.

One thing that isn't well known - in September 2012 they cancelled a show in Bologna, Italy. Three bands prior to them played (including Social Distortion, ATL and A&A), however The Kooks refused to play. Apparently The Kooks knew the concert was cancelling. The media found out that the concert is cancelled the night BEFORE - and they did a great job of burying it. What I understood, was that BJA was hospitalized the night before because of too much alcohol intake. This was mere DAYS before the iHeartRadio show. I was happy for him when they said he'd gone to rehabilitation. For someone who travelled from Croatia (and they have still never played in Balkan area) to a cancelled show, it was quite sad.

I actually worked this iHeart show and I can say, the whole thing is not what it appeared to be. I was a runner, in and out of the control room with the graphics team. I was in the control room when somebody from Green Day's team was going over the ROS with the director and he explicitly asked for the graphics team to come up with a countdown for the screen (we don't usually have a live countdown that says "1 minutes", it's usually coordinated beforehand, and there's stage directors that talk to the band in the wings. Also, the band does a rehearsal and sound check and they know what songs they'll be playing and how many songs etc. etc. The dude from Green Day's team then said, "we're dropping one song because Billie is going to go into a rant, so don't cut out, that'll be part of our time." The director said "Is the rant the last thing or is it between the songs?" He said "no, no, it's the last thing, so don't cut out of it." This was highly unusual, so grumblings started and the rumor I was hearing most was that Billie was going to go to rehab more for exhaustion than anything else, but the PR people really wanted something "buzz" worthy going on while they were on hiatus to keep selling albums and merch. Some of us worked a couple more of these and there's always rumors and hearsay, but the general consensus of what happened is, he wasn't drunk or high. He may have been frustrated because the crowd wasn't that into it, but, he's been around for a while, I'm sure it's not the first time he's had to work a bad crowd. It was probably the very poor reception to their new album(s) and all the side projects he had going on that just burned him out and this coordinated to keep them looking punk-rock.

I absolutely loved everything Green Day put out between 1000 Hours, all the way to Uno Dos Tre. But Revolution Radio and their newest releases of this year, just dont sound like Green Day to me...damn shame

It didn't get a lot of attention, but there's some good stuff off "Revolution Radio": title track, "Bang Bang" and, especially, "Somewhere Now."

Sometimes being drunk or drinking brings out the truth on your mind. I think what he did was perfectly fine and justified. We dont say what's on our minds enough. And I'm glad he did.

I actually watched his "freak out" live. You could definitely tell the crowd wasn't into it, but that's no fault of the bands or Billie's fault by any means. Billie tried to get them motivated and they all ignored him. I feel like they were told they had more time than they did backstage cuz people thought they would be better received by the crowd, but when they weren't they were cut short to a certain extent. I know that's not the official story, but that would explain why they were booked along side so many pop artists to begin with. I thought it was great Billie stood up and told them to fuck off. Half the people there probably had never experienced real music that isn't auto-tuned in person like that so they didn't like it. Ignorant crowd in my opinion...

In order to get revenge on her future husband a girl and her friend paid to see him perform a comedy show on stage, the two young ladies sat up front and did not laugh. This happened to Jack Benny 100 years ago. Green Day made someone mad, this was the revenge.

Punk or not, I respect Billie for owning up to the fact that he was blackout drunk. And an apology is necessary if their stage time, indeed, was not cutoff. Even Billie Joe said if he was sober he probably would have had a shitty time trying to play for those hosers... but hey, if you want to promote your albums to a whole new audience... stuff like that has to be done. Billie has always been an advocate for the people who feel like the outcast. I dont blame him for wanting to reach more people. But you can't have a melt down just because they dont like your music. Being Punk isn't about being a tripped out whiny teenager in a 40 year old's body. It's about doing what you want in the face of a society spent on getting you to bend to their will. So yes, his rant was well deserved IF their performance was cut short (because, for example, the crowd clearly can't appreciate the brilliance that is Green Day). HOWEVER, if iHeart Radio did right by him and he was too drugged out to see that, cussed them all out, smashed his guitar and left... an apology is absolutely necessary. I give Billie Joe HUGE props for admiting he had a substance abuse problem and that he did something about it. I cant even imagine him turning into the next rock star tragedy. I'm sure a lot of his fans have substance abuse problems too. It is absolutely the mature thing to do, admit it, take care of it, and move on. Show the world you are better than that.

it kinda makes me a bit sad that Green Day is living in the shadow of Dookie and American Idiot. Half the fanbase will always say it isn't as good as Dookie, the other half will say it isn't as good as American Idiot. The thing is, maybe that's true, but that doesn't mean the music isn't good. I don't think Uno, Dos, or Tre were, objectively, as good as Dookie or American Idiot, but personally they're three of my favorite albums of all time. They were just 36 songs of some friends having fun, and even if you don't like the trilogy, it's a really nice thing that they're still able to write what they like and ignore their fans hating it. Especially with Father Of All..., despite the fact that fans basically despise the album, they don't care, they're just having fun with it and doing what they want to do. I, personally, think that's fucking awesome, and extremely punk rock.
