Why are people so ignorant nowadays with punk? Green Day is and has been keeping punk alive ever since Kurt's death (may he rest in peace). Now I know they're not the same as they used to be but just look closely for a second, aight. American Idiot. Such a bold statement on Bush as well as the state of America right after the terrible events of 911. Bands before American Idiot's release like the Pixies tried to make a stand against Bush, but they were shot down and booed beyond shame. Green Day saw all this shame. And they knew they might get hung just like the Pixies if they tried to make a stand. But with encouragement from the lead singer of NOFX, Green Day decided to make their stand as American citizens. And if you ask me, this album is just as political and extreme as any Dead Kennedys' song. Now it's obvious that Green Day isn't as hardcore as DK or Black Flag, etc. they never were. But Billie has stated that their punk like structure was hidden more in the lyrics than the instrumentals. And I keep bringing this point up. Green Day is just as punk as the damn Ramones! And you're ignorant if you don't see that! Just look up any lyrics from Green Day me you'll see.
@WhatIfLeoIsAPanda9 жыл бұрын
Nirvana were Grunge and not Punk, so to suggest that Kurt was keeping punk alive is misguided. Grunge was all about an careless abandonment of politics and passion and instead focused on self destruction, it was born from an era where kids had nothing real to rebel against because their parents lived through the harsh political climate of the 60s and 70s and so were far too liberal and enlightened to represent "the man". Kurt said himself that he feels like his generation killed the dream his parent's generation created because his movement was apolitical and lacked any real motivation for change. That isn't to say they didn't make great music. Punk doesn't need to be kept "alive" because it died years ago. It became commercial and corporate almost as soon as it drifted into the mainstream media focus, real political punk bands like Crass would have wanted mediocre bands like Greenday to let the genre die.
@epichalocat28879 жыл бұрын
Without Nirvana punk would have never gotten big. That's a no brainier.
@epichalocat28879 жыл бұрын
But you're correct they are grunge.
@WhatIfLeoIsAPanda9 жыл бұрын
Also that is factually 100% incorrect. Punk was actually one of the largest aspects of the UK music industry whilst Kurt Cobain was still 10 years old. And bands like the Ramones and the Dead Kennedys popularized it in the US. Then later the new wave of hardcore punk in the 80's with bands like Black Flag and Minor Threat. All still predating Nirvana.
@WhatIfLeoIsAPanda9 жыл бұрын
They had punk influences, sure. But they were not, first and foremost, a punk band. I personally love Crass for the fact that they practised what they preached. Crass were comprised of artists and activists, they organised protests and used the money they made to cultivate art projects and communes. They are one of the few punk bands that were certainly not in it for the money, the politics were primary, the music was secondary. In spite of that I actually do enjoy their music but that is irrelevant to the point. They were true punks in the traditional sense.
