I want to do so when I'm old enough. I have good friends here and my cousins are the best, but I can't stand living in the same house as my parents anymore. I guess I'll stay until I can take my little sister out of there. My parents aren't abusive or anything like that. They're so just stupid it actually ends up harming us, but I know they don't mean it. How did you do it, btw?

Every song in creation is about a man that hurt a woman and instead of loving him and keeping him around... she leaves him for another man. Yet she is his true love. She stops thinking about the children’s true needs, and believes that those needs can be fulfilled by the other means that the new man has. The root of all evil... money. Destruction of family and this is our worldly system. God is the Mother, the Lord is the Father, and Lord God is the new man... this is the truth. Music is MK Ultra. To fix the world we must rid it of all the music and begin anew.

Ok, since everyone is debating the true meaning of the song, I'll explain my opinion 1st part This part is an introduction to the character. He named himself Jesus of Suburbia because he don't follow any religion and decided to make his own practical beliefs (From the bible of none of the above). His lifestyle is completely fucked up, consuming drugs and alcohol (To alcohol and cigarettes and Mary Jane [weed], to keep me insane doing someone else's cocaine), but to him, it's normal, that is his way of living in modern day America (Land of make believe) 2nd part The part tells that Jesus of Suburbia hated his hometown and every major cities. The city is damned because nobody gives a fuck about abandoned street kids (Including him I guess) 3rd part The part tells Jesus of Suburbia's simple motto, I don't care if you don't. He also reflects on everyone's hypocrisy in his speech, we also know that JoS hated war, and protesting American foreign policy (War and Peace) 4th part Inner struggle within JoS. Is it only him that feels this way about society? About modern day America? He is on the edge between insane and disturbed. He also talked about therapist who only cared for money. Everyone thinks he is an idiot, retarded, but he is only a human that had his own opinion, and frequently curses a lot 5th part He stated that suburban people are only living, not breathing. They never felt true life experience because they are the slaves of society. He decided to run away, cause he don't want to become a slave of society. He was also broken because everyone is so rude and harsh to him.. He also embarks on a spiritual journey. He don't want to apologize for living life this way, he don't feel ashamed living as a punk troubled boy, and then he left home The song isn't about Christianity, check out East Jesus Nowhere, now that's about religion and Christianity

Released as the fifth and final single from the group's seventh studio album, "American Idiot," and the second song on the album. With the song running for 9 minutes and 8 seconds, it is Green Day's second longest song (with the band's longest song being fellow American Idiot song "Homecoming", which runs for 9 minutes and 18 seconds) and the group's longest song to be released as a single. The studio version of this song was considered to be unfriendly for radio, so it was cut down to 6½ minutes for the radio edit. The long version was still played on many album rock and alternative rock radio stations. At most live shows on the first leg of the group's 21st Century Breakdown World Tour, the band would pick a member from the audience to play guitar for the song. The single has sold 205,000 copies as of July 2010. American Idiot is a concept album that describes the story of a central character named Jesus of Suburbia, an anti-hero created by Billie Joe Armstrong. It is written from the perspective of a lower-middle-class suburban American teen, raised on a diet of "soda pop and Ritalin." Jesus hates his town and those close to him, so he leaves for The City. "Jesus of Suburbia" was the second multi-part song the group formed. Armstrong said it took "a long time" to write the song. Dirnt said that it came about from natural rehearsing between the trio. This song was an extension of Armstrong's desire to write the "Bohemian Rhapsody" of the future. As the song changes into different sections, Armstrong’s guitars were recorded differently. The musicians would "split the signal from the guitar and send it into an amp while simultaneously going direct with it," to achieve a sound reminiscent of "Revolution" by the Beatles or the style of David Bowie guitarist Mick Ronson. In addition, an overdrive pedal was employed to accentuate gain from the instrument, producing a "punchy" sound to each chord. For the first two sections of the song, Cool emulated Ginger Baker and Charlie Watts, two English drummers from the 1960s. For the final three, he drums in his style: "I'm tipping my hat to all these great drummers that I love, and then I kick the door down and do it … my style."[8] In addition to Watts, Cool pulled inspiration from Keith Moon and Alex Van Halen.[8] The song was composed by Green Day (with Billie Joe Armstrong writing the lyrics), and was co-produced by Rob Cavallo. "Jesus of Suburbia" has five movements: I. "Jesus of Suburbia" (@ - @) II. "City of the Damned" (@ - @) III. "I Don't Care" (@ - @) IV. "Dearly Beloved" (@ - @) V. "Tales of Another Broken Home" (@ - @) Since its release, "Jesus of Suburbia" has received universal critical acclaim. People magazine called the song "epic" and a "magnificent nine-minute rock opera." It is often recognized as one of Green Day's greatest songs. It was voted the greatest Green Day song of all time in a Rolling Stone readers poll in September 2012. Magnet considered the song underrated, saying "Some will look at this choice and sniff, “How the hell can you call that underrated?” ... But how in the world can you call it “overrated” when the five-movement, nine-plus-minute song bobs and weaves its way through standard-issue pop punk(“Jesus Of Suburbia”), a piano-laced interlude (“City Of The Damned”), the slobbering, thundering middle section (“I Don’t Care”), acoustic mid-tempo connective tissue (“Dearly Beloved”) and an outsized, anthemic curtain call (the spectacularly good “Tales Of Another Broken Home”), all in service of a tale of bored rebellion as nuanced as Pete Townshend’s Quadrophenia and as powerful as any of Paul Westerberg’s snot-nosed teenage character studies?". Billie Joe stated in an interview: "[The song] broke every rule people thought Green Day were supposed to be. Lyrically, it’s everything about my past, but at the same time, written on the outside as well. That song is like purging everything, throwing it out." He also added: " ‘Jesus of Suburbia’ took a long time. We were driving back, because we were in the studio up in Oakland, and the only thing I could think of was like, ‘holy s-t, I can’t believe we just made this thing,’ and there was this fear, like there’s no looking back now." Armstrong told MTV: "Right after I came up with [the phrase] ‘American Idiot,’ I came up with [the album’s protagonist], ‘Jesus of Suburbia, I felt like it crossed that line between church and state or politics and religion. I thought, 'How would I interpret the Bible even though I’ve never really read it?’ So, there’s no burning bush, but there’s burning towns and ethics."

So many people in the comments are debating what sub genre of punk is the most appropriate label. They are missing the point.

I thought the meaning is obvious throughout the song if you really pay attention to the lyrics. I have to say the lyrics are the best part of the song. Also, the change in tone or melody at some points. That's just my opinion though.

I might recommend checking out Æther Realm, Iapetus, Opeth, Mastodon, Seven Spires, Septicflesh, Dream Theater, Persefone, and other such acts. There's plenty of there that do longer pieces, especially in the realm of prog. More than worth the time if you can enjoy dissecting complex musical phrases and crazy time signature changes. Even more so if you catch a buzz before popping your headphones on. Seriously, go listen to The Sun, The Moon, The Star, pay attention to the lyrics, and tell me that song doesn't stab you in the gut. Maybe I'm biased because there are parallels between the lyrics and my own experiences, but man...fantastic lyricism. I could about say the same for The Star of Collapse by Iapetus. The musicianship is top notch and the lyrics portray a dialogue between a gravedigger who seeks meaning in his purpose and an angel who has grown weary of our hostility and hubris.

One of the best lyric videos out there. Usually there are audio delays, spelling errors and misheard/typed lyrics. This was perfect; and yes, guitars rule!

The lyrics I don't feel any shame I won't apologize makes me think of the time that I had to call the cops on my dad who tried to shoot my mom and was gonna shoot me and my sisters. Now he's mad because I got his guns taken away and he can't get them back. These lyrics really hit home to me because it happened last year and he wants me to feel sorry about it but I will NEVER apologize.
