1. "American Idiot" - An introduction to Jimmy's (the main character's) views on the state of the nation 2. "Jesus Of Suburbia" - This illustrates Jimmy's life at home (before he leaves for the city). He calls himself the Jesus of Suburbia, and basically he thinks the world sucks. Some people think he's got a mental disorder (like multiple personality, which is quite possible)... but he's obviously confused and pessimistic and sick of suburban life. In the end (Part 5: "Tales of Another Broken Home"), he leaves home & sets out for the city. 3. "Holiday" - At this point, I think Jimmy is just kinda running around doing whatever, plus the song is another political statement. 4. "Boulevard Of Broken Dreams" - He gets depressed. He's lonely, sad, possibly suicidal, whatever. 5. "Are We The Waiting" - I think this is the song that confuses a lot of people when trying to break down the story. It's like a transition between the beginning and the rest of the album, when Jimmy is still trying to find himself or something. It's kinda hopeful, to me. 6. "St. Jimmy" - First, let's get this straight: Some people say Jesus of Suburbia & St. Jimmy are two different people, some say they're just different versions of the same person. I am in the latter category. I think St. Jimmy is just Jimmy's other personality in the album. In "Are We The Waiting", it says "the Jesus of Suburbia is a lie"... now Jimmy turns into a hardcore, possibly drug-dealing/suicidal punk. 7. "Give Me Novacaine" - Drugs. 8. "She's A Rebel" - Jimmy meets Whatsername, the perfect girl for him. The song sums up her character pretty well... 9. "Extraordinary Girl" - In the CD booklet, some of the lyrics are in Jimmy's handwriting, and some are in Whatsername's writing. The song describes their difficult relationship. 10. "Letterbomb" - This is Whatsername's letter to Jimmy. She flat-out tells him "you're not the Jesus of Suburbia, the Saint Jimmy is a figment of your father's rage and your mother's love". She leaves him, fed up with the town & him. 11. "Wake Me Up When September Ends" - In the storyline of American Idiot, this is Jimmy mourning the loss of Whatsername after she leaves. The song is about Billie Joe Armstrong's father dying (he died of cancer on September 1, 1982 when Billie Joe was 10 years old) 12. "Homecoming" - With Whatsername gone and no one else around, Jimmy is unsure what to do. He has to figure some stuff out. The lyrics "Jimmy died today, he blew his brains out into the bay, in the state of mind, it's my own private suicide" mean Jimmy "killed" St. Jimmy (the self-destructive side of him, sort-of). "Rock 'N Roll Girlfriend" is a postcard from Jimmy's friend Tunny, wherever he is. By the end of the song, Jimmy realizes what he needs to do, and he goes home to Jingletown. 13. "Whatsername" - He's been back home for a while, and he's no longer the Jesus of Suburbia or St. Jimmy, he's just Jimmy. But he still thinks about Whatsername. I think this song is kind-of a reflection on his time in the city and what he lost.

His real name isn't Jimmy. When his alter ego (St. Jimmy) dies at 2:08, it is simply called Jimmy, so Jimmy can't be his real name. The narrator in his head goes back to calling him "Jesus" at 3:47. Whatsername addresses the letter(bomb) "Dear J.", so all we know is that his real name starts with J. Probably just James.
@bigmommatron10 жыл бұрын
St jimmy is a drug dealer to the main character jesus of suburbia and interestingly enough the album story is a anarchist punk who leaves home moves to the city loses sight of life to drugs and ironically joins theilitary and returns home after almost dying, I base this off of the Broadway adaption of the album which was conducted by green day
@1money1110 жыл бұрын
thanks dude Id give you 2 "likes" but it only lets me give 1 lol
@SelvesteSand10 жыл бұрын
Rappinggrandmaz Billie Joe himself said about "Are We the Waiting" that it's the point where "J." feels truly lost and turns into St. Jimmy. They're the same character. If they're separate characters in the musical, it could be understood as a narrative where they're actually still the same character, like in the movie Fight Club, where you find out towards the end that the two main characters are actually the same guy with split personality disorder.

Saw a lot of questions in the comments, so.... The story of American tells the tail of Jesus of Suburbia who Hates his life in Jingletown California, He leaves his home for the city "Meeting" his Alter-ego, Saint Jimmy. Saint Jimmy because friends with Jesus and the become king of the streets. His kingdom? The 7-11, His subjects? The underbelly. He meets this awesome girl who goes by the title "Whatsername" who he falls in love with. Later in the story Whatsername dumps Jesus of Suburbia with a note known as "Letterbomb", the whole song is Whatsername telling of Jimmy, saying "You're not the Jesus of suburbia", and "Saint Jimmy is a figment of your fathers rage and your mother's love", Depressed over Whatsername, Jimmy returns home in "Homecoming" where he "kills" Saint Jimmy which in a sense to him seems like suicide hence the quote, "Jimmy died today, he blew his brains out into the bay... In this state of mind, it's my own private suicide", Later Jesus realizes that he has no one now, he's all alone, his friends are doing better, he realizes this when getting a post card from his friend tunny, which is the part of the song, "I have a rock and roll life". It's a story of a man who finds his true self, learns to love, and experiences the pain of a broken heart.

I've literally lived this album... most people go to college or the military after high school. Some go to trade school, some go backpacking or work. I decided to move to a new state and live the story of this album with my life. I paid attention to the flow of my life and the story from song to song. Now it's time to go back to the state I left.. my homecoming. I even had my st jimmy personality change and everything... it's kinda fucked up now that I tell people about this. Nobody knows how to react. The album cover is gonna be a patch on the back of my vest when I hit the last song after homecoming. Less than 30 days until I'm home though.

In fact this whole song is easy to play as are most of Green Day’s music until you break down the layers of music they lay down and finding their overall sound for yourself isn’t so easy however.

He's no longer "st. Jimmy." He's just jimmy. When he ran away he experienced some fucked up shit and started thinking "this is not what I want." So he returned home and quit the act of "Saint jimmy." And lived a normal peaceful life. No more drugs, alcohol etc. he never saw Whatsername again, but he did think about her when returning home. Then he finally got over her and burned everything he had of her (photos).

I feel the very first verse may refer to Saint Jimmy's parents having regrets on him leaving 'My heart is beating from me I am standing all alone" Refers to either one of his parents standing alone still heartbroken from their child leaving them "Please call me only When you are coming home" They still have bitter feelings for him being what he is, an emo, self-loathing kid. 'Waste another year flies by Waste a night or two" Every minute feels like an hour and vice versa without their son. He IS still their child "You taught me how to live" His parents think back at how his existence shaped their life for the past 10-30 years only to have him ditch them

When someone talk about American Idiot, they mention "Wake me up..." or "Holiday/Bouvard.." However Homecoming and Jesus of Suburbia is pure gold for me...I was lucky to saw Green Day last year in Hradec Kralove, Czech Republic and I kind of hope that i would hear Homecoming...however Jesus of Suburbia was also great...nice and thanks!

This is my favorite Green Day song for sure. American Idiot isn't my favorite album/era of theirs, but this song did a great job of showing off everyone in the band's vocal and instrumental talent. Also it's 5 songs in 1. The only things that could have made me like song more are if it had a little more punk influence and if Rock and Roll Girlfriend was longer.

I know it's sad but it's the truth. It's 2022 and the reality of this music is many many times worse. I live in the Netherlands and life here is like Satan's hell. Loneliness here is many times worse. Some people break other people's happiness to make them lonely and very sad. The Netherlands is a very sad country this time. Suicide rates are very high in the Netherlands, its sad but it's the truth. But this music is amazing because it's telling the truth. Edited: fixed some grammar.

Through it's plot, the album expresses the disillusionment and dissent experienced by a generation which came of age during various turmoil including the Iraq War" All the songs are connected.

@SunniestAutumn10 жыл бұрын
That's because all of the songs in the album are interconnected, apart from maybe American Idiot and Wake Me Up When September Ends. Jesus of Suburbia ends with Jesus leaving home, going on a Holiday, from which he wakes up hungover on the Boulevard of Broken Dreams. Still not accepted in the society, he questions "Are We the Waiting?" He no longer can take it, so he takes up the alter ego of Saint Jimmy. While being someone he really isn't, Jimmy wants to get out of pain (hence, Give Me Novacaine), until he meets the rebel girl, the Extraordinary Girl. In Letterbomb he comes to the conclusion that the girl (who is called Whatsername) and he are not fit, because She's a Rebel while he just pretends to be, so he decides to go home, or, in other words, perform a Homecoming, after getting rid of his unreal alter ego, Saint Jimmy. Years later in an unclear situation, he recalls the past events and his times with Whatsername. It's a single story. That's why there are so many references: they are not just references, they are continuity. American Idiot, as a song, is just a summary of the themes of the album. About acceptance, tolerance and other such themes. Wake Me Up When September Ends really has no purpose in the grand scheme of things. It's just a song which tells one not to take loved ones for granted, really. American Idiot, as an album, is absolutely beautiful and one of my favourite instances of lyrical storytelling in the history of the world.

A lot of people think Jesus is the best song of the album and even by Green Day, but man this song and whatsername challenge that. Imo all three are the best. This song is important to the story and gives chills at some points, Jesus just goes dummy and perfect fits the punky bohemian rhapsody idea Billie was looking for, and whatsername is a great song for moving on from someone. While the entire album delivered some damn good quality, these three are by far the best to me.

No album will ever hold so much joy or so much anguish for me when I listen to it. Looking back, we all have these albums that leave us with a not quite sublime, not quite melancholy retrospective glance that stays with us forever. Hard to believe it'll be 10 years old this September 21st. Thanks Green Day.
