I'm always saying this. It's such a shame. I feel like 21st got overshadowed by the success of American Idiot. I felt that they put so much effort into this and talent was at its peak, but then people complained that it wasn't like their previous albums and then they just never did anything like it again.

I've always thought of Green Day's discography in arcs. I feel like the first half of their career, in particular, can be broken down into distinct, two-album phases: 1) 39 Smooth/ Kerplunk: The Lookout Years. Most songs are about love. Chuck Berry-esque guitar solos abound. Low budget recording quality. Endearing. 2) Dookie/Insomniac: Fast, lean pop-punk that leans more aggressive than their previous material (esp. Insomniac). Far fewer love songs, more about growing up, boredom, and angst. Mike Dirnt's is ON FIRE during this time. Those basslines... 3) Nimrod/Warning: The "I think I'm an old man, but I'm really just in my late 20's" years. More songs themed around getting older, responsibility, letting go. Lots of experimentation with different instrumentation. Strings, Mariachi bands, horns. It really did feel like their career was slowing down around this time, but I loved, and still love these albums. 4) AI/ 21'st CB: The rock opera years. Big, anthemic, multi-part songs. Very slick production. Albums really best experienced from front to back. Also, a big change to Green Day's live performance. Sudden emphasis on aesthetics (eyeliner, matching stage outfits, BIG bombastic live shows). I remember being turned off initially when AI came out. The group of schlubby white dudes I idolized as an early teenager now looked like a walking Hot Topic and felt unapproachable. I've since come around these albums in a big way, but this is where I fell off as a fan for about a decade. It's harder to categorize the second half of Green Day's catalog. I feel like it's more of a grab bag of unrelated musical statements. I thought Revolution Radio was going to be a new phase for the band, but they followed that up with Father of All... As for Saviors, I think it's up there among Green Day's best work. I haven't connected with a new Green Day record this much since probably Warning. I wouldn't mind if we get a second album in this vein in another few years.

Man, as a lifelong fan of the band who started out at Nimrod, tracked back a couple of years before the release of Warning and have been with the band ever since through the good, the bad, and the indifferent, I want to say this ranking is absolutely awesome. Now, me of years lost and yonder MAY have been combative about American Idiot being number one on that list, but on it's 20th anniversary and, for all the reasons you mentioned, I can't hate on it being #1 on your list. I'm just glad that you gave Nimrod the third spot because, as mentioned, it's where I started with the band before going back to Insomniac, Dookie, Kerplunk, and 1039/Smoothed Out Hours. I don't have the love for DOS! That you have, but that's a minor qualm and definite background sound. I do like the props you gave to Saviors as, following the album that was Father, it really brings me back to the better days of the band and to what they could still very well be. Which is scary, considering it's now 34 years since their debut proper!

Great job on the list Jon! I can see your points you bring up for each album and respect your placements even if I personally disagree. I remember being so excited for Saviors that when I was done with my film program for the day and got home, I rushed to my music room and re-listen to Green Day's discography again. Granted, I need to re-listen to Father of All and the trilogy again and see if my thoughts change, but for funsies, here's my ranking on their discography from worst to best as of right now: 14. Father of All... (5/10) 13. UNO (6/10) 12. DOS (6/10) 11. 39/Smooth (6/10) 10. Kerplunk! (6/10) 9. TRE (7/10) 8. Saviors (8/10) 7. Insomniac (8/10) 6. Dookie (8/10) 5. 21st Century Breakdown (8/10) 4. Revolution Radio (9/10) 3. Warning (9/10) 2. Nimrod (9/10) 1. American Idiot (9/10)

Saviors is def a project I was waiting from them. Revolution Radio was great when it came out but it lacked something that I feel wasn't getting fully tapped into. It's more rock than it is punk and has some pop influences in there but still a solid record. Saviors feels like a modern green day doing punk again. I can't get enough of it. I need to listen to all of their music again at some point. I think it's been 10+ years since I've really given their whole music a listen through.

Nice video! And I haven't properly consumed GD content in a long, long time (for reasons that become obvious below)! As a caveat, I think the distribution should tend to normal with any artist/band, so higher tiers should have less albums by definition. Of course there'll be an upwards parallax when it's done by any fan. But given that I'm one of those "90s Green Day" annoying ex-super fans that shouldn't even be here, that this video is old and that nobody gives an f anyway, I'll let myself go at the game -- with my parallax going downwards: [S]: Dookie, Warning | [A]: Kerplunk, Insomniac (and while we're at it, International Superhits!) | [B] Nimrod, Shenanigans, 1039/SOSH, AI (and the FHT thing) | [C] 21CB || Though I haven't listened to some of the others beginning to end, and the ones I did, spare choice cuts is the best I could come up with, they all feel like [D]. Except for FoA. P.s.: It's interesting to think, as I write, of other bands that underwent some major change of direction/aesthetics like GD did. At some point the loss of contact feels really weird, especially when you hear about such band randomly after a long time. Arctic Monkeys is my primary example, but it could include Metallica, Kaiser Chiefs... even Coldplay (to stay in the vicinity of 'rock'). That's not to be nostalgic or anything, there's always stuff one can go to at different times... Well, if anyone bothered to read this, do you have your own? (Now I'll shut up 'cause I talked too much)

Real commentary though, As someone who grew up with American Idiot and International Superhits being my first exposure, then going back to Dookie and playing it for 100+ hours, and THEN Finding Insomniac, I think I can safely say that Insomniac is my favorite Green Day album. Dookie has the incredible, lovable "Fuck it" attitude about it with a lot of sincerity. American Idiot has the world-stopping power of "Fuck you" political punk rock just at the right time. But Insomniac represents (to me) all those nights you spend in between those events. I think they REALLY perfected their craft with it, because to me there's not a single skippable song on the album. I may be talking out of my ass. Not out of nostalgia, but out of lived experience. That's just my take.

@Jane-pr3wu I appreciate it! I agree with the list to a large degree. The clear difference for me is that I'd have Kerplunk in the top 3 and Warning barely cracking the top 10. I'd also have American Idiot 5th. But I was born in the 80's and Green Day had already made a huge impression on me long before American Idiot.

AND DOOKIE! AND RANCID! AND THE LINDA LINDAS! I'm not excited about the pumpkins tho. I hate that I'll have to see Billy Corgan.

@@sainttimmy highly recommend rancid. Punk legends, some of the best bass playing ever laid to tape. And the Linda Lindas are punk's next big thing.

@@alexallen6286 oh I love how punk the Linda Linda’s are and I’ve heard of rancid I just am not sure where to start but I’m itching to get myself familiar abit with these legendary groups

@@sainttimmy if I had to recommend a couple rancid songs (I know you didn't ask) I would start with the songs 'hyena' and 'maxwell murder'

Did you guys know that Jon was born on the same day as Green Day's "Kerplunk"? Crazy.

Speaking of *Shenanigans* listen to *Espionage* by Green Day, and then listen to *Bloody Mary* by The Living End [You'll notice The Living End's sticker on Billie's guitar at 18:10 ]. Almost identical, but who made the song first is anyone's guess.

just a couple of weeks ago I spent around 11 hours in 2 days ranking all of green day's songs, in order of how often I would listen to them. I know that the list is flawed (Most because Jesus of Seburbia is in the second to last rank) but I would highly recommend as I got to look back at all of my favorite green day songs, andfind a few hidden gems that I passed up on before! I also know that my list was not perfect because if I'm being honest, I am not the biggest fan of American Idiot songs on their own.

I would've put 21st CB in S tier, but I mostly agree with this list LOVE 21st CB (I also love rock ballads and anthems lmao) It's a Melodic masterpiece

Out of the whole 90s trilogy of albums when compared to dookie and nimrod, insomniac is hands down my favorite! Even though it’s hard to decide between the three

here's my personal tierlist while i'm watching the video: S is legendary album, A is the "above average" good, B is the gold standard, C is "below average", just subpar but not straight up bad, D is kinda bad, F is stands for Forgettable (I can only save Graffitia and Sugar Youth). Tiers internally ordered, best first S: American Idiot, Dookie A: RevRad, 21CB, Insomniac, Saviors B: Kerplunk, Warning, Nimrod C: 1039, Tre D: Uno, Dos F: FoaMF
