Block parties and Jams were still what we would start calling Hip-hop in the 80's. Remember, we didn't hav a name for it. Corporate America called it Hip-hop so they could market it and capitalize off of it. Clubs were for a paying public, street jams and block parties were free for the entire community, including the kids who weren't old enough to go to clubs. We watched this thing evolve because everything they did in the clubs the DJs did in the parks and on the blocks for us. W remember this thing before there were even MCs rapping. That didn't come till later at the end of the 70s. So like it or not, Colon is telling the truth and all the emotional hysterical yelling and screaming over him doesn't change the facts.

While I do think Dr. Colon is wrong in denying it was originally all African American, I do believe being from that community while coming of age doesn't make him an outsider. He was a young kid but wasn't an outsider. If that reasoning was applied to everybody, most of us living today, FBA or NOT, would be considered OUTSIDERS when it comes to Hip Hop.
